A's 7, White Sox 5: Santos has it, loses it
Sergio Santos had, nobody on, a two-run lead, and an 0-2 count on Josh Willingham.
And the A's won 7-5. He just flat-out lost batter after batter, slowly losing any semblance of control, and it was fan-murdering to watch in real time.
He threw four straight out of the zone to Willingham to keep Oakland's hopes alive. Then he got ahead of Hideki Matsui 1-2 before throwing a slider that split the plate. Matsui singled Willingham home to narrow the gap to 5-4.
A five-pitch walk to Daric Barton followed, and he loaded the bases by hitting Kurt Suzuki on the elbow with a 2-2 changeup.
Scott Sizemore was looking fastball, because that's the only thing Santos could throw over the plate, and he ripped it to left center for a bases-clearing double. Santos would walk another batter before departing, and he took the blown save and the loss as Andrew Bailey retired the top of the White Sox order 1-2-3 to close it out. In the process, he also closed the book on Oakland's 10-game losing streak.
It was an ugly end to game that wasn't particularly pretty in all respects, on both sides.
The Sox should have hit Graham Godfrey harder, because he only had a fastball in the first two innings. Paul Konerko knew what to do with him, as he jumped on one for a two-run shot in the first inning to get Edwin Jackson a lead after he allowed a first-inning run.
But there were some bad hacks, too. The hitch in Gordon Beckham's swing returned, Alexei Ramirez popped up with a runner on third and two outs, and they let Godfrey off the hook until he could discover his breaking ball.
It wasn't much cleaner on defense. Alex Rios got turned around on what turned out to be a Jemile Weeks triple, and he came around to score on an infield single by Cliff Pennington, thanks to Jackson being unable to field his position.
Jackson's slow reaction time almost cost him in the third, as they loaded the bases on a pair of infield singles with two outs. Coco Crisp followed by smoking a ball to center, but it was right at Rios.
But it appeared that the Sox would get enough of a margin thanks to some sloppy play on Oakland's side. Alexei Ramirez led off with a double, and then scored on a Carlos Quentin nubber to third that Sizemore threw away. Quentin then went from first to third on A.J. Pierzynski's single, and Pierzynski moved up when Sizemore couldn't come up with the difficult hop at third.
That single chased Godfrey, but Michael Wuertz couldn't clean up his mess. Rios brought home one run with a grounder to short, and Adam Dunn followed by lining a single down the right-field line, giving the White Sox a 5-2 lead.
Chris Sale gave one back with a shaky effort, and Brian Bruney could only retire one of the two guys he faced, giving up a walk and a stolen base.
Matt Thornton provided the most competent moment of the night with his two-thirds of an inning. He needed just two pitches. Some might argue that he could have been left in to finish the ninth, but Santos retired the first two batters he faced with ease.
Then he just flat-out lost it.

I'm glad you referenced that skit
Especially since every SINGLE time I see a close-up of Joba Chamberlain on the mound, all I can think of is “Look at him. His sweaty, fat face sucking in air like a dying fish…”

I've had it in my head since driving to Fenway

Tough loss tonight
But I doubt any Tigers fans are feeling any better after losing to the Mariners. I am sure Cleveland fans feel far worse than us. They seemed to be unstoppable and now appear to be the Cleveland that we thought they would be.
The season isn’t over. This team is playing well overall. We are winning games and winning series. Rios and Dunn look like they are waking up. Its June. Maybe Oakland deserved just a little something for once.
Remember how bleek it felt in April? Remember the last time the Sox lost like this to the A’s? I don’t know about you, but I am having a lot more fun watching the games nowadays. I still feel really good about this team. Don’t forget, our schedule is cake this month and the next and after that its lots of games against divisional opponents. Its ours for the taking
this is one of the worst games ive seen. i'm going out drinking.

Cripes. Finally get on the ground and I find out this is how the game turned out.
After the Initial flight cancellation and having to re-book at 8am, after the first hour delay for the plane coming into O’Hare, after the subsequent delay leaving the gate cause the catering truck broke down next to the plane, after the circling St. Louis for like another hour cause several nasty storms cells just kept popping up, after two attempts to land that had to be waved off CAUSE THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AT THE AIRPORT.
This. This is what I have to end the evening. Sheeeeeeeeeit. They will get ’em tomorrow, right?

Locked into having a designated closer again
I was hoping to see Thornton come back out in the ninth so I could say ’ Ozzie really gets this – using relievers flexibly ’ – but no – he’s got a closer now – and that sucks.
all right handed hitters were coming up.
i bet if a lefty was leading off ozzie would have let him at least start the 9th. even so, i also wanted to see thornton start the 9th.
very disheartening.
disheartening-o-meter: 8.2
Pennington led the inning off, he's a switch hitter
Still though, you’re right that his first three guys he faced would have been batting from the right side.
We don't have an infinite supply of relief pitchers
Benching a pitcher after he’s thrown two pitches for two outs is incredibly wasteful.
There are many reasons Thornton should have started the ninth:
—He did his job in the eighth.
—He had only thrown two pitches.
—He is trending upwards in his recent performances.
—Santos was trending downwards, even before the major downer of last night.
—If he was successful in the ninth, it would have boosted Thornton’s confidence.
—It would have been great to give Santos a night off and some rest.
I, too, thought Ozzie was going to show more flexibility in managing the bullpen because we don’t have a named Closer. But last night proved that Ozzie was just going by The Book by putting his Closer in to start the ninth.
Now we have another Closer Controversy. Now Ozzie will have to put Santos in for the next ninth inning save opportunity to prove that he still has faith in his Closer, because that’s also what The Book says you must do after your Closer blows a save.
Baseball is life.
"Trending downward" = One bad outing

out of options.
should just release him. anyway, we’ve got guys like wes whisler who need the reps in charlotte.
Didn't Mariano Rivera had two blown saves in a row this year?
And Mo has had them in (very few) opportunities in the past (I am talking about a guy with less than 30 BS in his career)…so I wouldn’t panic elgonzo4sox…. BS are part of the game and teams have to endure a few of them every now and them (Unless you have a “juiced” Gagne in your pen). I would worry if there is a health issue, or like last night, when Santos loses his slider. He needs that pitcher to be successful. Let’s hope he will get it back. If not, I am sure Coop and Guizzien will notice and do something about it

Win a few, lose a few. Feels better than it is.
They are 3-3 over the last six. 7-7 over the last 14 and 10-10 over the last 20.
Wheee! We are mediocre at best!
my bar is set higher.

Two brutal blown saves in a row for Santos
Yes, the first one was Pierre’s fault, but last year at this time he had the same thing going on – no confidence, couldn’t get the ball over the plate. Hopefully we can get him into some lower leverage situations where he can start attacking hitters again rather than forcing him to work through it as a closer, otherwise he could wind up being another guy who needs a Rios/Dunn mental vacation…
He didn't blow a save last time.
It was a tie game, he was in his second inning of work.
He was 5-for-5 in save opportunities since the Mitchell homer, and hadn’t even allowed a hit over his last six outings (7 2/3 innings).

True
Error in language. To say “blown games” would be more accurate. And more meaningful.
He’d been playing great, but the loss of his command is reminiscent of his first set of struggles last year – which he didn’t pull out of until he took a full week off.
That was truly awful.
One might even call it ‘unacceptable.’
Hopefully, tonight will be better. Mostly since I’ll be there and won’t take no Oakland shit.

What TIMELINESS
JIM WRITES ABOUT HOW THE STARTERS IMPROVE THEIR WALK RATES AND SANTOS GIVES AWAY A GAME WITH WALKS.
And the relievers' BB numbers were also discussed.
In that vein, no real surprises last night.
And despite his prodigious, powerful display,Battling loneliness, rage, misery
There really isn’t much else left to say.
