White Sox Minor League Update
2004 Prospect Retro from Sickels:
Brian Bruney, RHP, Arizona Diamondbacks
Bats: R Throws: R HT: 6-3 WT: 220 DOB: February 17, 1982Looking for a closer of the future? Take a look at this guy. Bruney was a 12th-round pick in
2000 out of a small town in Oregon. He’s been clocked as high as 99 MPH, but works
more often in the 94-95 range, still plenty fast. He has a very good slider, and he’s
improved his command and control massively over the last three years. This is a guy who
posted a 6.48 ERA and walked 29 guys in 25 innings in rookie ball. Three years later, he’s
one of the most impressive arms at the Triple-A level. Arizona has handled him carefully,
and he should get a chance in the major league bullpen sometime in 2004. He still has
occasional problems with his command, and it wouldn’t be a shock if he struggled initially
in the Show. But this guy has great stuff, improving control, and an aggressive attitude,
exactly what scouts and coaches want in a closer. Keep very close track of him. Grade B+.

per usual, great falls is getting the older players. bristol so far has some of the interesting high schoolers from last year’s draft, like rangel ravelo and brad salgado.

Well, you could figure there'd be some lingering effects of, you know, not playing for a year
What’s beyond me is when the poor numbers cease to be aftereffects as opposed to signs of under/stunted/misdevelopment.
Addison Reed, RHP, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Very early in the season, I was at a game with a scout who had just returned from seeing the White Sox’ Low-A affiliate at Kannapolis. I mentioned something about there not being much to see there as far as pitching goes, and the scout gave me one of those ’you’re missing someone…’ looks, then said, "Addison Reed might get to the big leagues this year." A third-round pick last June out of San Diego State, Reed jumped to High-A after just four games this year, then, after 15 appearances, was bumped to Double-A. In his debut on Sunday, he struck out three over a pair of hitless innings. With a fastball that has consistently gotten into the upper 90s, Reed now has 53 whiffs in 38 1/3 innings across three levels and has walked just seven. His low-80s slider has good movement and almost doubles as a changeup due to the velocity separation. I looked at the scout like he was nuts earlier in the year, but as always, I should have trusted him; Reed could be in the big leagues by September.

Sox claim LHP Leyson Septimo off waivers from the Diamondbacks and optioned him to Class AA Birmingham.
converted from an outfielder in 2008. nice velocity for a lefty (95+). appears to generally have no idea where the ball is going.
We can build a bullpen entirely out of castoff converted Diamondbacks position players.

i have viciedo in my cbs sportsline league and this is what the update stated.
Asked whether or not he is ready to play every day in the majors, White Sox OF/INF Dayan Viciedo, who is currently playing at Triple-A Charlotte, gave MLB.com a definitive answer during an interview Monday. “I’m ready,” Viciedo said. The White Sox also tend to agree, as GM Ken Williams seemed to strongly suggest in an interview with MLB.com that Viciedo is likely to be recalled soon and not to play in a reserve role. “It would be awfully interesting to have him in this lineup,” Williams said. “He’s ready. He’s obviously got some things he still needs to work on, but I would have no qualms about bringing him here. I’m not going to bring him here to sit. [White Sox manager] Ozzie [Guillen] is not ready to change the mix he has right now, and that has to be respected.”
(Updated 06/13/2011).
Williams and Guillen agree that Viciedo needs to play every day. If he was recalled, then Guillen sets the bar at Viciedo playing five times per week, getting at least 20-30 at-bats. Viciedo has played only right field at Charlotte this season, but there is no talk of moving Carlos Quentin out of the starting lineup. No, the whispers are that the White Sox are souring on left fielder Juan Pierre, although Guillen continues to defend him. Chicago could always consider dealing Pierre in an effort to clear at-bats for Viciedo, who entered play Monday with a .313 average and .517 slugging percentage in 61 games at Charlotte. “He is slowly acquiring a little bit more plate discipline, and the ball comes off of his bat harder than anyone we have,” Williams said of Viciedo. “And the sky is the limit to where his potential can take him. Getting him off of third base and putting him in the outfield, it has really helped him start to make some progress offensively.” Fantasy owners in deeper seasonal formats will want to stash Viciedo, who hit .308 last season for Chicago and could be an impact bat again upon his recall, which seems imminent.

From Mark Gonzales' mailbag:
I like the moves Buddy Bell has made in teams of staff instruction and moving players who no longer have a future in the organization and promoting those who have earned it. I heard good things about the Double-A Birmingham team last month from two scouts outside the organization, and that’s always good to hear when evaluating.
The Sox did slightly pay over slot two years ago for high school outfielder Trayce Thompson, which shocked many scouting and college sources in Southern California who thought he was headed to UCLA. The fact that he’s hit 11 home runs at Class-A in two months bodes well for his upside.
I understand drafting plenty of college players, but I think drafting kids with the background like Thompson are worth taking when the situation presents itself.

his defense is where i needed more information.
and i just don’t have enough info on that. i don’t think there was much question about his offense.
Would you say the uptick in walks
Is more due to a small sample size / pitchers just avoiding the best guy in the lineup, or an actual improvement in approach as he gets older?

more on reed, from jason parks
Addison Reed (White Sox)
TCF: Reed is a 22-year-old with a plus-plus fastball and a good feel for command. His arsenal includes a plus-potential slider with and a split/change that one scout said he liked better than the slider. At present, Reed relies heavily on the fastball to miss bats.

My opinion based on this fact, and only this fact
Dayan is getting traded to Toronto and needs to get US citizenship in order to travel to road games. Because of this I’m going to speculate that we’re getting Jose Bautista in return.

• Eduardo Escobar, ss, White Sox: The White Sox have a rich tradition with shortstops from Venezuela—see: Luis Aparicio and Ozzie Guillen—and coming into the year, Escobar looked like a potential candidate to be the next in line. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound Escobar put a poor April behind him with a solid May at Triple-A Charlotte, hitting .271/.291/.469 with four home runs, nearly equaling his total of six last year. So far in June, though, he’s slipped back to his early season woes. In his last 10 games Escobar has gone 5-for-35 and is still in the middle of a 0-for-17 hole with seven strikeouts.
