White Sox Minor League Update Restores Sanity
Yet more Prospect Retro from Sickels' 2004 book:
Matt Thornton, LHP, Seattle Mariners
Bats: L Throws: L HT: 6-6 WT: 220 DOB: September 15, 1976
Matt Thornton had an excellent campaign in 2001, going 14-7 with a 2.52 ERA in the
California League. He got off to a decent start in ’02, but blew out his elbow half way
through, and had to have Tommy John surgery. Rehab went quickly, and he ended up
making 8 starts in 2003, doing well enough to put him back on the prospect lists. He has
his 90 MPH fastball and good slider back, but still needs to improve his changeup and
command. I have a wild feeling that he is going to break back out again in ’04, but I can’t
prove it. Grade C.

He better start stealing bases, because he ain't a power hitter.

Tyler Saladino, SS, White Sox (High-A Winston-Salem)
A seventh-round pick last year out of Oral Roberts, Saladino opened plenty of eyes after signing by hitting an impressive .309/.397/.442 in 47 Low-A games. A broken hand delayed his 2011 season, and there were worries that last summer was a fluke when he hit .182 in his first 20 Carolina League games. Since then, he’s back to being the player we saw last summer; with two home runs over the weekend, he’s hitting .329 in his last 18 games to up his season averages to .252/.333/.476. Beyond having well above-average power for a middle infielder, he’s also a legitimate shortstop who makes up for average range with instincts and fundamentals. He entered the year as my 12th-best prospect in a weak White Sox system, and he’ll surely get a full write-up this offseason.

Apologies if the answer is obvious, but why do they use a 7-day DL in the minors?
Do injuries suffered in Charlotte take less time to recover from?
why does major league baseball use a 15 day and 60 day DL?
because that’s what someone came up with.
i imagine part of the 7 day choice has to do with encouraging teams to protect younger players by making the “penalty” of the DL much less in terms of time missed. also, there’s little reason to be worried about teams putting players on the DL who aren’t really hurt just to play roster games, like there would be in the majors. no one cares about who wins, or who plays, in the minors because it’s there for development of prospects and rehabbing major leaguers. all speculation, of course.

Triple-A Charlotte’s Knights Stadium tends to inflate home run totals, and RF Dayan Viciedo is no exception. The 22-year-old slugger has hit 23 of his 33 Triple-A homers at home during the past two seasons. But Viciedo has upped his road OPS this season (.929) by nearly 250 points over last year (.686). He batted 11-for-28 (.393) this week while contributing two homers (one home, one away), two doubles, two walks and seven RBIs. The righthanded-hitting Viciedo homered twice against righthanded pitchers this week, taking both Tyson Brummett and Chris Bootcheck deep, though he loves facing lefties. In his three-year minor league career he’s batted .301/.360/.546 in 336 plate appearances while facing southpaws

This may be one of those dumb questions, but I can't recall it being discussed here-
In the minor to major league projection systems, do they take into account the minor league home stadium vs. the major league stadium the player will be in when he gets called up?

i'd like him better if he had a position.
he played mostly first in college. moved to third at great falls last year. since they moved him back and there’s a really horseshit baseball player at third for the dash, i think it’s pretty obvious they think he can’t play there.
in any event, as mentioned previously, i like that they were aggressive in skipping kanny with him. i thought he’d take some time to adjust, and he has, but he’s hitting a lot better recently. he has the hit tool, and he’s left-handed, so he’s got a chance to be more than the AA/AAA mashers that guys like him usually turn into.

Viciedo home run highlights
HR 13 – Pretty much just get to see him round the bases. If you look closely and squint, the ball appears to be an opposite field line drive. Knights announcer notes the HR came with two strikes and it’s a hitting split Dayan has noticeably improved on.
HRs 14 & 15 – Tides announcer says the first home run barely clears the wall, yet the ball bounces off the roof of a building several feet behind the left field fence and into the parking lot. The second is a no-doubter.
