BMO: Where We Disrepect Veterans and Send Down Whoever the Hell we Please

http://www.baseball-manager-online.com

This is how baseball works, isn't it?  You just get to send down whoever you want, whenever you want?  Sure, Shoeless may have completely disrepected Tom Glavine by putting his old ass in long relief (2), but I'm sure he won't come back to haunt him forever.  And what's a 'waiver'?

Recaps.   In league 1, the wild card NY Meteorpolertwains that I left last season to the computer won the world series, and we're looking at the offseason.  Great.  You guys let the computer win the WS.  Really?  I mean, I knew I was a good GM, but come on.  It looks like Lilli and Quentin were both dropped by the U-God owned CHW, and we can only assume it's because of his angst at the current real world team.  Or because he finished 51 games out.  Kansas City continues to completely destroy all opposition in the Central.  In the East, the Toronto Cinderellas pulled out a stunning amount of wins, despite their overall players' ratings.  Unfortunately they ran out of gas 1 win away from a world series win.  Oakland came out of the weak West, and was destroyed in the playoffs.

In the NL, the normally dominant rhythm sExpos were quickly snuffed out in 3 games in the NLDS by the Marlins, but since the Marlins are actually the Cubs, they were unable to finally win a pennant and were once again killed by the miracle Mets.  Try as you might candiru, you still manage the Cubs.  The LA Ramblers, led by an ageless Cliff Lee, finished with an NL high 103 wins, but were unable to jump over the Mets in the playoffs.  Is league 1 dying?  Thoughts?

Star-divide

In the flourishing League 2, we are in June of 2008, and the trade deadline is rapidly approaching.  In the NL, the young Florida team led by threerunhomer continues it's dominating dynasty, with the lowest payroll in the majors.  We're all waiting for those damn kids to start demanding some money from that team.  Houston's young team is ripening finally, and has taken the lead in a tight Central race.  It'll be interesting to see this team in a year or two.  E-gus's D-Bags continue to lead a strong West, thanks to his ridiculous team OPS of 0.791.  In related news, the entire state of AZ has converted to Q!, a religion worshipping a HEALTHY baseball player and his magical Q!nicorn.

5585852510_7d89acf0b2_o_medium

In the AL, Baltimore has jumped out with the East lead with a very impressive rotation led by Brett Meyers.  But Tampa Bay is coming for you treehouse, I swear it.  Also, does anyone know if there is a "Demolish Stadium & Build New One" button?  I've got about $100mil in cash and nothing to do with it.  Shoeless is holding the Piranhas above an unimpressive Central, but it's only a matter of time before the entire state shuts down and the team moves to Quebec.  The LA Angels lead the impressive West with a killer pitching staff, which is surprising, as the game doesn't have virtual Gatorade coolers for Zambrano to take his rage out on.  Or maybe that's why they're winning.

you might've been able to get more

But that’s not a terrible haul. Those 100 potential guys are huge. In general, every other prospect’s potential goes down each year, but I’ve never seen someone lose 100 potential until they are in the big leagues and have peaked.

So League One owners.

What are we going to do? We’re losing owners left and right. I don’t think I can undo the password function with my assistant commissioner status – so U-God, if you see this, please undo that. Revenue sharing? I can apply it this afternoon/tonight and I can put all of the computer teams in debt if that’s what the league wants as well, to prevent the Mets from buying another world title on the back of 34 one year deals. But in the meantime, how do we keep from losing more owners? And how do we get some owners into some teams?

P.s. I’ll be moving from Houston to LAD, because that’s what I wanted to do anyway.

I would've stuck around had the markets been equalized, or at least the expenses had been capped.

Revenue sharing doesn’t work if it’s not applied before impending FA’s are released.

That’s why I’m saying it’d be easier on everyone if markets were equalized and/or expenses capped.

I'd be happy to do either.

I’m a fan of both and think we’ve had a lot of success with equalized markets in L2.

I'd vote for unequalized

with no revenue sharing or anything in League 1, just to make it different from league 2. But I don’t care much either way.

To fill the league, let the active owners have two teams. (If it stays an unequalized league, the large market team can financially support the small market team.)

Well that's two for equal and two for unequal

SP2.0 you have your poll question – for league 1 at least.

I for one don’t have the time to run a second team, and I’m not big on trying to figure out which teams are owned by the same owner when policing trades. I’m approaching the frame of mind where I say we just fold the thing and go with one league and try to get someone to take over the open team in L2

About policing trades

Why bother? I’d try to make both my teams win, but it’d be okay with me if some owners tried to have one super-team and one farm team. Different strokes. It might be fun to see how it works out.

meh

i would have only 300k players on one team and load up on scouting so i could have one team devoted to player salaries and one team devoted to scouting and development.

but then again it is the laissez-faire sim and it has a unique style different than that of L2.

I'm not touching that league again.

I put my heart and soul into those players and went all-in last year selling my far to get Hanley, Cabrera, Upton, and Felix. Hanley played like a jackass all year and Cabrera was not his usual self. Despite this I won 93 games and missed the playoffs because the other teams in the league were completely absent and allowed 4 super teams to run rampant. That league is a damn hot mess now with multiple owners and I’m not touching it. I’ll stick with league 2.

That was the main impetus behind the pause

I had a rough patch where I wouldn’t have much time to knock out the rev sharing leading up to and over the weekend and I didn’t want any of the baby markets to miss out on the weekend FA bidding bonanza. I already lost one team owner because I was a day late on getting the rev sharing done, and I didn’t want to lose anymore.

League One: I need ideas here.

I’m sitting here doing the revenue sharing, and I’m shocked at the condition of some of these teams. Chicago is more than 60 million in debt (probably because U-God has likely abandoned that ship, which saddens me because this league is in his name as well as the higher commissioner functions) Cincinnati is 31 million in the hole. Anaheim is 20+ million in debt, plus several others. Granted, Gus and I always ran up the debt when I was in Boston, but our revenue meant we could afford the high payrolls and just operate at a slight yearly loss. It was a pain, but we always bounced back because we played in two of the largest markets in the game.

My point, what am I supposed to do here? I could reduce the debts to zero, but it should cost these teams something. Should I release the highest paid players and let them into the still fresh Free Agent pool? And what should I do with the absentee owners? I CAN boot U-God out of Chicago, and Rhubarb hasn’t logged in to check his team in 12 days and Trooper hasn’t checked his Tampa club in 11. I seem to recall Craig saying he would be largely unavailable, but then wasn’t his interest waning as well?

What do I do here guys? These are serious issues that small band-aids like letting owners take a second team aren’t going to fix. If U-God was around, he could remove the password and let other players in to take things over, but he isn’t.

Frankly, I’m not opposed to folding it all up, but that’s just me.

Suggestions?

Turn the inactives into comp run teams?

I’m fine with erasing all the debt but also releasing the highest paid player on the teams that are in awful debt.

I just want it to run because it’s gonna be fun with all the chaos.

Pains me to say it

Because I developed some really good young players, and they’re actually panning out, but it’s probably for the best to close it down. Would leave people to focus on just one league, as I think two leagues being open might actually hurt both.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 25, 2011 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd also mention

I’m fine with keeping both open, and will manage both teams, I’ve just had a crazy couple of weeks so I haven’t been as active as before. But it has nothing to do with a lack of interest or anything like that. My schedule should die down by the middle of August.

if you keep it going, Id let everyone going into debt have a shot at FAs before the fine hits.

give the rev sharing to those that need it, and take it away from teams going red afterwards.
being locked out of the whole off-season really kills any enthusiasm for the league.

im ok with shutting it down too.

It seems like league one has finally succumbed to mass indifference.

I’m kind of in the same boat as GiT. Seattle still sucks but we actually won 80(!) games last year and finished second in the putrid AL West. I’ve got a lot of young talented arms and it’s not impossible that we would get over the .500 hump in 2018. I’ve even been encouraged enough to finally re-name my team.

BUT…….

None of that is very satisfying when a third of the league’s teams are computer controlled and half of the humans have checked out. We’ve all been in those fantasy leagues where a couple of owners find themselves at the bottom of the standings in mid-June and cease making even the most basic of roster moves. It’s always more fun when everybody is really into it.

So, how do we get 30 human owners who are active participants? I don’t think it’s possible unless, as Hazy suggested, we nix the password and invite some “strangers” in. Maybe some of the higher debt totals could be slashed in half instead of complete forgiveness. I like e-gus’ ideas as well. Once the off-season ended, I would love a return to the Wild West with no revenue sharing or caps. But that’s just me and I’m not looking to re-ignite that debate again. I could certainly stomach revenue sharing and maybe some very tall spending caps (on farm, scouting, and medical).

Should the league continue, I will dutifully check in twice a day to make the appropriate adjustments. I am an addict, after all. But should the league fold up its tent, I can’t say I’ll be all that upset about it.

I do it the easy way

microsoft excel or google docs, you need 4 inputs (Runs Scored, Runs Against, Wins and Losses)

from that you need to calculate Run Scored^2(A), Run Against^2(B), Win% and Games Played.

the calc for pythag win % is as follows A/(A+B) that gives you something like “0.66847151”

multiply this by your total Games Played and you get your pythag wins and subtract your pythag wins from Games played to get pythag losses.

I usually keep some conditional formatting on my results cells to check to see if they are above or below my actual wins/losses/%

My favorite part is where they pull the pitcher after he issues a IBB.

“Look at those pitches. You don’t have anything left.” “Umm…you told me to give him an intentional walk.” “Look kid, it’s alright. Everybody’s gonna hit a wall at some point.”

by ScottyPods Ver2.0 on Aug 3, 2011 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually, in real life I would agree with that.

I wouldn’t want to bring a guy in from the pen and then have him start out with an intentional walk, doesn’t seem like it sets him up for success. He’s gotta come out of the pen and find the strike zone right away, an IBB can’t help with that.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 3, 2011 9:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Can I fire the manager? ffs.

Intentionally walking the two hitter to get to the number 1 and number 3 home run hitters in the league, in a tie game in the 8th inning. Awesome. That’s how you end up in third place.

My intentional walk setting is -1.. it’s not like I’m at +10. Ridiculous. I’ve set it to -5 now.. hopefully that’s good enough to avoid such decisions ever being made again.

Okay, I sent messages to each league 1 owner a week ago - these are the responses:

Disband:
Grinder, 3run, Egus, WhiteSoxMatt, Doc, Hazy, Thatoneguy, 3e8 and rhythm

Keep:
TKHawk, BigStein, KenWo, Normanje, Treehouse, ironschenk and garridgepride

Abstaining:
Kyle321n

Absent (No Vote):
Candiru, UGod, Boyonthedock, Rhubarb, Craig and Trooper

By a narrow margin the vote to disband passes. If those that voted would like to take over the league and do something with it, I will happily hand over the commissioner’s keys to them and wish them luck. I’ll even keep running a team to help out as there were several players that said something similar. I don’t like the idea of competing against players with two teams though. It seems like too much can go wrong there.

At any rate, I’ll be putting all of my focus into running L2… which is likely to now become League Only… at least until another obsessive comes along and starts another league again.

If you don’t have ootp12 i could show you how to get it. i just noticed that ol' Mark Chagnon recently jumped into the top 20 for career batting average.

Hazy-I’ll gladly take the keys, if only to ensure Chagnon’s hall bid is granted.

If the above mentioned owners would still be willing to run their respective teams, then simulations can resume as early as tomorrow. If all interest is gone, I’d gladly use the league solely for entertainment purposes. I’m in another league that’s currently in 2026. However, none of the women have actually reached “impact player” status and I’m dying for an estrogen-induced 62 tater performance.

I’m willing to turn on trades with the computer because they’re still not easy to pull off, regardless of who tells you otherwise (pending league vote obviously). Revenue sharing can easily be done before free agency starts as long as one of you numberz dudez crunches the numbers for me beforehand.

I’m also willing to allow all types of digital steroids.

Don’t do it for me, people; do it for Mark Chagnon. The same Mark Chagnon that e-gus pilfered from newbie Atlanta and the same Mark Chagnon that gus traded to me for, in hindsight, nothing. League Only - Looking to make a "creative" deal

Need to dump some payroll, and/or trade one of my excess corner IF’s/DH’s. Vlad, as well as everyone else making over $1M is available.

How does one go from the best offense in the league,

To below average??? I’m not even sure what needes fixing!

by ScottyPods Ver2.0 on Aug 17, 2011 10:35 AM CDT reply actions

you're players don't have good contact ratings

check out the trolls. all 90-96 contact. power is next most important. eye is somewhat important, but I haven’t really seen it be that useful. 96 contact equates to about .300 average for entire year, with mostly singles if power is low. 92-96 power equates to about 40-60 HRs with decent contact. (although fielder can hit 30 HRs with 79 contact). In general, if a player has really good

baseline contact for mlb level is about 85, but i suggest much higher if you want a valuable mlb player. Also, the closer power/contact are to each other the more useful the player is (ex: Gomes, Anderson)

Overall player ratings can be deceptive, players can have 96/96/96 arm/rng/fld and 77/67/79 con/pow/eye and still be rated in the 90s (depending on POS, i was thinking SS here). you’re team specifically is a bunch of meh hitters with good eye and good fielding (anders is ridiculous and shane costa is a great batter however).

Usually he tears the cover off the ball the rest of the season and by September his stats finally look respectable. I’m not sure what’s going to happen now that he started the season out hitting .270.
