Trading for Jackson
Ranks right up there with trading for Swisher. Glad we could dump Teahen though.

in 2010 was their top prospect according to BA, slipped to 5th this season
Background:The fourth trade acquisition among the first five players on this list, Stewart came to the Blue Jays along with Edwin Encarnacion and Josh Roenicke in a mid-2009 deal that sent Scott Rolen to the Reds. Cincinnati broke him into pro ball as a reliever in 2008, started him at the beginning of 2009 and shifted him back to the bullpen shortly before the trade in an effort to keep his innings down. Toronto kept him in the rotation to finish 2009. Stewart returned to the rotation in 2010, and he pitched well in Double-A.
Scouting Report: Stewart works with two plus pitches in his fastball and slider. His fastball sits in the low 90s and routinely reaches 95-96 mph, featuring above-average sink. His mid-80s slider has depth and misses bats. The slider sits in the mid-80s and is a good swing-and-miss pitch with depth. He commands both pitches well. Stewart also developed some feel for a changeup last season, and it has the potential to become an average offering. With a third effective pitch to go with his durability, Stewart could become a mid-rotation starter.
The Future: Stewart is in the mix to win a big league rotation spot in 2011. If he can’t cut it as a starter, he has the stuff and makeup to become a set-up man or a closer.
i'm not a particular fan.
he was 25 and in AA and not putting up particularly impressive numbers. he’s a reliever, i guess.

I don't know what to think
Nobody knows exactly what happened with the STL-Rasmus deal. I guess the farm caught up with KW again and he didn’t have the ammo to pull off the deal. Toronto does, along with E-Jax.
I’m mad because we ultimately traded Hudson and Holberg for Fraser and a soon to be known prospect.
I’m worried that this is the first domino to fall and KW will gut the team. Worried because with his trading record lately, I’m scared that he will get fleeced for all our big trade chips.
perhaps jim should repost his hudson/holmberg posts
apparently not everyone got the memo the 6th time around

I don't think it looks any worse than it did before.
Dealing Hudson for Jackson was stupid, but if anything Phil Humber made Jackson expendable. Who can say if this is the best Kenny could get for Jackson, but he managed to dump Mark Teahen, so I’m satisfied.
Nellie Fox's career high for strikeouts in a season was 18. In his 19-year career, he walked 719 times and struck out 216 times.

The original trade of Getz and Fields for Teahen was not a bad move.
The bad move was signing him to an extension.
"Many people need desperately to receive this message: 'I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.'"
OH NO!!!
We lost Getz and Fields!!! They were going to be great I tell you! Great! Fields is having an amazing season this year (at AAA Colorado Springs).
It really hurts that we lost those two.

This is kind of weird
Toronto has to have a deal in place to send Edwin elsewhere, it makes no sense for them to take rental guy.
Don’t mind it from our end though, Stewart’s a solid near-ready prosepct and it’s abundantly clear that management wanted another righty arm in the pen who is better than Bruney, and they got it.

Its too bad when you have to make deals
to save a few bucks because you have already blown several hundred mil of the bosses money.
Jason Frasor went to Oak Forest high school.
So I like that part of it.
Getting rid of Teehans is ok.
Zach Stewart is even a pretty good pitcher.
From John Sickel’s “The Baseball Prospect Book 2011”:
I was very optimistic about Zach Stewart heading into 2010, to the point of ranking him one notch ahead of Kyle Drabek on most of my prospect lists. This was unconventional, since most experts liked Drabek better. It made sense to me at the time, but Stewart has slipped a little in my mind, enough to where I now agree with conventional wisdom, though I still like him a lot. Sterart gets his sinker up to 93-95 MPH on his best days, and mixes it with an above average slider. His main goal in 2010 was to improve his change up, and he had moderate success with this…. He didn’t get as many ground balls last year, his GO/AO going to 1.27 after sitting at 2.06 in ‘09. His home run rate also spiked up from his previous norms, and he didn’t pick up strikeouts at the same rate when used as a starter compared to his campaign in relief. I am still a fan of Stewart and continue to regard him as a B+ prospect, but there is enough uncertainty here that he drops down the top 50 list several spots.

yeah, agree. Or maybe a slight positive.
closing the door on the Teahen mistake is a positive. Maybe they could have gotten something more useful for Jackson, but only marginally so.
So we get salary relief, a useful-ish Frasor, and possible contributor in Stewart. We give up mostly spare parts.

I have to imagine that Kenny is not done yet this season.
I think we more or less know what the Sox think of Morel, at least for this season. It’ll be interesting to watch, at least, which is more than I can say about this team for much of the season.

cash in the deal I think and plus they took on 7.5 million. Seems like way to much for a prospect in a slump

I think I'm talking about Rasmus?
And I don’t have to look into the future to know that he’s going to be more than average, because he already is.
Are you sure you are talking about him?
He is 23 and has had a big year. This year he has been benched for Jon Jay. My argument is that Toronto gave too much for him anyways. He will probably be a decent player but I doubt he is a perennial all-star. I am not going to sit and argue about the future of Rasmus with a lost tigers fan, we already did that here.
Rasmus' OPS in this terrible no-good awful down year?
Still 111. He had a great April, a good May, a below-average June, and a shitty July. He’s benched for John Jay partially for struggling and partially because the manager hates him, and partially because Jon Jay has been an above average hitter in the majors.
"Many people need desperately to receive this message: 'I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.'"
the elephant in the room is his defense.
some think he needs to move to a corner soon. that offense doesn’t look so good then.
yeah. fangraphs doesn't like his defense this year or last.
although they curiously liked his first year.

i should say
if it wasn’t implied, mostly affects outfield defense. reactions more important on the infield. those may be slowed some but experience makes up for it, as least for awhile. speed to chase down flyballs is more difficult to offset with better reactions.
Makes sense to me...
but would you see that of decline in range in such a young player?

All reports I've seen and heard have him waiving his clause
He wants to be a FA this year because the market at 3B is terrible and he could get $36/3. The problem I’ve heard is if he waives his no trade clause, the option year is automatically vested. I heard them hint on 670 that the Cubs could buy out the last year right before they trade him so he is a FA at the end of the year, but I’ve not seen the wording in his contract to know if that’s true.
If we could get him for this year and this year only, I think any trade not including Dayan/Morel/Humber for him is pooty goo

If we DFA Rios and he clears waivers
it’s up to him to declare free agency or go to the minors correct? If he doesn’t accept going to the minors can we “pull him back”?
no, DFA does not mean waivers
if he clears waivers he is available to be traded to anyone. if he is claimed while on waivers, he can only be sent to the claiming team.
if he is designated for assignment the sox have 7-10 days to either:
send him to the minors (he can refuse)
grant him his unconditional release and then pay out the rest of his contract.

Sale has better stuff than Rzep
but Reed and Remenowsky don’t throw left-handed or have any ML experience. A feather in Rzep’s cap is he did have success as a starter in the minors (< H/IP, > K/IP)
right.
what I should’ve said is that Reed, and to a slim extent, Remenowsky, have the ability to be Rzep at some time (minus the lefty part) Obviously, if the WS were to match that offer to the Jays they’d have to throw in more.

Except Rzepcynski has proven he can pitch in the majors.

Yeah, like U-God says, even if you are bullish on Reed
I think Rzep’s floor is higher
a VERY AVERAGE Sox Machine refugee
Rzepcynski...
his GB% is 65%, up from his career rate of 50%. He’s throwing his FB 10% more often this year than last year, and 9% more than 2 years ago. He’s throwing his slider and changeup less, so perhaps that is part of the reason behind his limited success. He’s essentially a fastball-slider pitcher at this point. By moving to the bullpen he’s able to go out and throw his fastball harder and to greater success than he would if he were in the rotation. The results so far have been pretty decent, although his BABIP is .248 and he’s due for some regression.
What this all tells me is that he’s, right now, a good bullpen piece and possible back of rotation filler. That’s worse than Sale, and probably a little bit better than Addison Reed in about 1-2 seasons. Reed’s ceiling has gone from a back of rotation starter to closer/setup guy. So it’s not unreal to think Reed can become Rzep in a year or two. If your the Cards, you take Rzep though, obviously since he’s MLB ready, even though Reed is 4 years younger.

Keith Law's take on White Sox' end, apologies if posted elsewhere:
http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog?name=law_keith&id=6808507
What I don’t understand here is why the White Sox are essentially selling, unless they were just clearing payroll to add something else. They’re three games out of first place in the loss column, and after bottoming out at 11-22, have gone 39-30 since then, and have a very realistic chance to win their division, especially since they can add Dayan Viciedo and perhaps Addison Reed from their own farm system for the stretch run. They had some depth in the rotation, assuming they believe the Phil Humber Show can go on all year, but they are clearly worse off at the major league level today than they were last night — and if they can’t convert Stewart’s stuff into results, they’re going to be left with very little return for trading Daniel Hudson last year.
Easy chief

he's mostly right.
but, if this was the only way to get de aza up here (in the mind of the white sox), i’m not so sure they’re worse off today.

Kenny managed to get De Aza here without cutting Vizquel nor Lillibridge, demoting Morel, or any other various moves OG would’ve likely opposed.

I don’t agree with him that the sox are worse off at the ML level for it. They still have 5 starters. As was discussed here multiple times in the last week, the only real move would have been to send down Morel, bring up DeAza or Viciedo, the end.
This gives them mobility for another move, lets them bring up DeAza now, payroll flexibility, didn’t send anything to the Jays for Teahan…

Heard on on MLB that Sox were in talks sending Edwin Jackson and Teahan to Yanks. Don’t know what we get, but it would help Oz manage with better options and would allow Sox to bring up the Cuban. Jackson is solid but Humber deserves spot and six man rotation has to end. Teahan has not been able to figure out where he stands on team and may need fresh start in New York. We will see.
