i feel sub-optimal. (temp of 90 and dew point of 75 will do that)

also, i have a really stupid feeling that rios is going to hit a home run off of captain cheeseburger.

Sabathia-Peavy would've been a dream match-up in 2007.

Alas, now I smell a pounding.

Frank Thomas's wOBA at the time of the 1994 strike was .497. He was on pace to hit 54 homers, drive in 152 runs, walk 152 times, and pile up 10.5 WAR.

i like how in the 4th inning they showed quentin's good numbers in his last 14 games.

here’s some other numbers. in his last seven games plus today he is batting .179 with 4 singles, 1 double and 9 strike outs. his slugging percentage, .214. his OBP, .207. (that’s an OPS of .421 if you don’t feel like doing the addition)
ugh.
(also, he has seen exactly four pitches in each of his last four plate appearances. if he gets four pitches in his next plate appearance it will tie his record for most consecutive plate appearances seeing the same number of pitches. he saw three pitches in five straight plate appearances spanning the games on april 25th and 26th against the yankees.)

because he is such a sparkplug for this offense. He is the starter log. quentin is the little box of snakes for the whole fireworks show we call dropping a match on the ground and clapping.

Joe Sheehan spitting hot fire!
The people who get all up in arms over how steroid use defiles baseball are nowhere to be found when something truly offensive happens. Jerry Reinsdorf, who I’m reasonably sure can order from the whole menu, forced his GM to deal away the White Sox’ #2 starter solely to save money over the next two seasons, getting nothing of baseball value in return but a mid-rotation prospect. He did this while his team was within 3 1/2 games of first place, a spot held by a team that had been outscored. So spare me the PED outrage and the whining about the integrity of the game. Selling off one of your best players in a pennant race for what amounts to a rounding error in your bank book is a hell of a lot more offensive than anything a baseball player ever did with a needle. Sportswriters, write about that.

The White Sox could win this division. I picked them to win it at the start of the year, and they’re four games out with 56 to play, with the same run differential as the teams in front of them. It’s just a shame their owner is a schmuck, because few teams had such obvious, upgradable roster spots.

by affiniakw on Aug 1, 2011 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Did he throw slower in College as a starter?

You are probably right but I dont think it will be too significant. Those few mph should not matter much if he is able to consistently hit with the slider

by affiniakw on Aug 1, 2011 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions

it happens with pretty much every pitcher

they hit their max speed much more often as a reliever because you are throwing so many fewer pitches. i’m guessing sale could be 90-94 as a starter

scouting report on Sale from before the draft
Chris Sale, LHP, Florida Gulf Coast University
Sale attracted the attention of scouts last summer in the Cape Cod League, and has maintained that momentum this spring with a 2.48 ERA and a 78/8 K/BB in 58 innings, with 55 hits allowed. His exceptional K/BB and K/IP ratios reflect the fact that he has excellent command of his 90-95 MPH fastball, terrific changeup, and developing slider. Tall and lean at 6-5, 180, he has an attractive combination of polish and stuff, and could still have some remaining physical projectability. He won’t get out of the Top Ten picks, and seems a logical candidate for the Indians at five or the Diamondbacks at six.
