Crowdsourcing, SSS Style
OK- So Mrs. Doc and I have a 17 year old foreign exchange student from Norway for the next 9 months. She is Filipino, which makes her a Norwippino. I am compiling a list of places to go in the greater Chicagoland area that are cool destinations for visitors and locals.
Here is my list, after the jump- Please, fellow SSS'ers, feel free to suggest more, better and novel places. Some are cliche, some are tacky, some are cool- they are all Chicago, and I know there are many more, and I know you can help.
Cliche Touristy:
Navy Pier
Brookfield Zoo/Lincoln Park Zoo
Sears Tower/Hancock Tower
Navy Pier
Jerry Owens
Arty:
Art Institute
Renegade Art Fair
Jerry Owens
Holography Gallery (dont recall the exact name)
Floating World Gallery
Architectural Boat Tour
Frank Lloyd Wright Home
Museumy:
Shedd Aquarium
Adler Planetarium
Field Museum
Museum of Science and Industry
Museum of Contemporary Art
Museum of Owens
Mercantiley
Christkindlmarkt
Water Tower Place
Jerry Owens' Leftorium
Any Mall
Cool Towns
St.Charles/Geneva
Crown Point
Norway, IL (yes, there is one)
Owensville
Outdoorsy
Chicago Botanical Gardens
Morton Arboretum
Indiana Dunes
US Cellular Field (where Jerry Owens played)
I know I am missing better places, so help a doctor out!

Did you really just come here and ask us what to do with your 17 Norwippino girl?
My actual suggestion- The Pullman district.

figure out what kind of music she likes
and go from there.
So fast he could hit a ball up the middle and it would hit him in the ass sliding into second.
And food.
This thread will inevitably turn to food.

Do one of these while there's still time:

Also, The Reader is great for less touristy weekend activity planning.

Fap, fap, fap.
Music, food, anything America. I think you’ve nailed it.
Oh, and blue jeans. They love blue jeans. And she does windows, I bet.
You are one perverse old bastard.
And we dig that about you, baby!

And all three of you are fuckers.
And you, TP… I used to think you were the least fuckerish of the three of you. I’m not so sure anymore…
"I considered throwing a volley, but since I'm considerably closer to Ford City than Dodge City, I figure it might have been misinterpreted."
Exactly how am I supposed to prevent that?
Take it up with God, brotha.

Let’s end that debate right now.

Why is the Art Institute "arty" and the MCA "museumy"?
Take her to the Swedish Museum in Andersonville and see if any fisticuffs erupt.
The IM Canal path is a lovely spot for a walk.
The History Museum is worth a gander and it’s a mile from the zoo and Nature Museum – you could have much worse days than that.
Get tickets to Next on her first night here and tell her that’s how we always eat.

A lot of places do shows for 17+
She could probably catch some of her favorite bands at smaller venues that she wouldn’t normally get to see up close without spending an arm and a leg. My brother is the same age and I’ve taken him to a few shows, just check their website before you buy tickets for the age limits that day. Seeing a band I love like Biffy Clyro or Two Door Cinema Club in a smaller venue is something I probably wouldn’t get to do if I lived in England. I’m sure there are bands from Norway that she could say the same thing about.
If you’re going to take her to the cell, you should probably take her to Wrigley too. Shit hole that it is, still a unique place to go, and something people in Norway may have actually heard of when she talks about Chicago. Plus tickets are probably as cheap as they’ve been in a long time.
Six Flags is cool, and the lines are a lot shorter now that they have that water park.
Show her some of the country life.. take her to a county fair, Sandwich’s is pretty good, tractor pull, demolition derby, all that jazz. She’s in the American midwest, she should experience more than just what the city has to offer.
Might be good to take her to a college town for a football game, not much beat’s the college football tailgating experience, Urbana or Madison maybe, or DeKalb is probably closer and certainly cheaper.

Missed a couple of Chicago Sports hot spots...
The House that Jordan Built (United Center, at the very least the statue).
The House that Halas Built (Soldier Field, maybe for a soccer game?)
If you’re feeling a little tight on money, the Chicago Wolves are good for a fun evening.
And Wrigley, for all of its faults, is still a fun place to watch the Cubs get slaughtered.
And a couple other random ideas…
Hancock is probably better than Sears for the deck, from what I’ve heard. Maybe Trump if you’re feeling adventurous?
Michigan Avenue
Lake Shore Drive
The Bean (likely can be combined with the Art Institute trip)
6Flags (especially in September)
Woodfield Mall (she’ll like that, even if you won’t)
The Second City comedy club
As far as foodstuffs…
Uno’s is overrated, but very good. If you’re doing the UofI Football trip, Papa Del’s trumps that completely. Giordono’s, Lou Malnati’s and Edwardo’s (in that order) are also good Chicago-style pizza places. Get her at least one Chicago-style pizza.
Can’t remember the other places that we usually take visitors to around here…
I'm a Geno's sort of person so I'd put that down as the place to go
But really for any of those places you can’t go wrong.
3 things in life I care about
Sox, Colts, and Hawks.

Shakespeare Theatre is the only reason I'd ever recommend going to Navy Pier
Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind is a fun show and I think it’s all ages
Here are some music venues I think do all-ages shows: Andy’s, Jazz Showcase, Fitzgerald’s (Berwyn)
Also, going down to Hyde Park to walk around the U of C can be fun, there are some good restaraunts and you can also check out Max Pelvsky cinema
Schuba's & Subterranean have 17+ or all age shows I believe.
Lincoln Hall might too.

If you take her to Hyde Park, you can show her where the President of America lives
Just explain that he is like the American version of Jens Stoltenberg, but instead of ruling over a desolate strip of rock and ice whose economy was historically based on raping and pillaging, he rules over an actual country.

oh yeah, the air show is this weekend.
maybe go on friday and watch the practice if you want to avoid the killer crowd.
if you get a nice crystal clear day with a low dew point
nothing beats the architectural boat tour. nothing.

Based on Blog-a-Bull and every Pinoy I have ever interacted with, just buy her a basketball hoop and a Kobe Bryant jersey.

Ride the Brown Line on the L.
It goes through some wonderfully dense neighborhoods, stays away from tougher areas, and is close enough that you can really see the streetscapes as you go past, and does the Loop. Also, it doesn’t dump you way the hell out in some suburb like some other lines.
