In which our enemies are revealed
Daryl Van Schouwen says it's down to the Sox, Cubs, Marlins, Orioles, Tigers, and Indians for Yoenis Cespedes. At least we know the competition now.

i finally figured out what turned me off about the font
I think most of it is because each word appears to be in a different size font to make them fit within the same right and left alignment constraints, given the amount of letters in each word. Its not about the font as much as about the person’s choices of how to put them on the graphic. Although, I have a newfound respect for that person because that is difficult to do given the demarcation line.

Hopefully center field.

Fangraphs looks at the subject
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/can-yoenis-cespedes-showcase-talents-in-mlb/
Just looking at the statistics Cespedes compiled in Cuba, there isn’t a glaring weakness which looks to tank his game upon landing with an American (or Torontonian) squad. He was as complete as a player can be in any league. Much of his value depends on his ability to play center field, of which there seems to be optimism around scouts. His Cuban numbers seem to suggest above-average power for the position already, and with any sort of plate discipline he has the ability to push an All-Star level in MLB. With his power and his superior athleticism and strength, the risk factor for Cespedes seems lower than with other relative unknown players, and the reward if he reaches his potential could be incredible.

andruw is already sitting at 60.4 bWAR, though he'd be at 62.7 bWAR if he'd sat out '08.
think the last few years are gonna make it tough for him.
Pineda is the interesting part in that deal.
and they got Kuroda too. Yankees are now the top team in the AL.

Alot of that depends on what they get from Jeter and Rodriguez
and from their catcher and DH.
So are they going to put Freddy in the pen then?

Good call. Burnett the fanciest piece of shit reliever in the majors. Imagine his pride, I see them giving Burnett the first shot. Maybe they do a six ma……..no effing way.

i read that as 'fanciest pants'
and now i’m probably gonna forever think of burnett as the fanciest pants. nice.

Sounds like the Yankees need a DH
Dunn for Burnett and cash anyone?
this is certainly amusing.
burnett at least exhibits the properties of a major league baseball player. at worst, he’s a setup reliever and probably a very good one. dunn exhibited no properties of a major league baseball player last season. if in some crazy universe someone would take adam dunn, send money and also send a productive baseball player, the white sox should jump at it.
no hope for him recovering to being at least useful then?
given how unprecedented such a drop was, do you think it is harder to project to dunn to be that bad again, or easier?
of course there's hope.
the question is how much you want to bet that he recovers. burnett realistically is, what, a 1 WAR player each of the next couple seasons? you could pay $33 million for that. dunn realistically is, what, a 1.5 WAR player each of the next three seasons? you could pay $44 million for that. either way, you’re losing basically the same amount of money. sure, maybe dunn has more upside than burnett. but he also sure looks like he has more downside. [note the reason i liked striker’s original query is because he posited that the yankees would pay the white sox. straight up is, of course, a closer question.]
it’s quite easy to project dunn to be a replacement level or worse player.
yep.
i wouldn’t even make them include money (it would be nice if they did though). Burnett will at least go out and give you some innings. I don’t know what some of these people watched last year… but Dunn is toast. Plus he only has 2 years left. Dunn has 3. The quicker we can get out of this the better.
Kenwo4life=ratings. Just call me Mr. USA Today.
I'll take it!!!
For 11 millions (The difference) we can sign a more productive DH than Dunn like Johnny Damon….or…even Manny Ramirez may out produce Dunn.

What about *gulp*
Carlos Pena to split time with Konerko at 1B/DH? Again, if we moved Dunn. Which I am not sure I want to do that, but it’s mostly because I wouldn’t know what to do with my “Git ’er Dunn” t-shirt I got for Christmas in 2010…
Well, boys, it's a round ball and a round bat and you got to hit the ball square. ~Joe Schultz, 1969
If this scenario were to happen
Konerko would never see the field. Pena is a gifted defensive player.

Dunn can’t handle Chicago, how do you think he would handle NYC? The Yank’s supposedly had some reservations about Garza’s mental makeup, I doubt they would even think about Dunn….. That was a sick 2nd td pass by Brees!!!
If this unlikely scenario were to materialize
I wouldn’t give a shit whether Dunn could handle New York
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
I don’t think he is going to be as bad as last year to begin with, whether it’s here Cincy or Washington. I don’t know if he is gonna hot 40 hr’s anymore, but do be historically bad two years in a row is improbable. Rhubarb, I agree it’s unlikely and I don’t really give a shit if he could handle ny either, was just saying the Yankees for sure would care whether or not if he could handle it. Which he couldn’t.
i don't get why you think he couldn't handle it.
unless you think the sole reason he sucked is because he ‘felt more pressure’ in chicago than he had before.
yeah, you can make an argument that he did because of the cascade-yness of it all, but i don’t think chicago made it any worse than washington or cinci woulda done.
If teams thought it had anything to do with
media pressure, they’d be looking to make a Zambrano-to-Marlins type deal. And the Sox would I’m sure be glad to get some of that deal off their books. I.e. if there was any demand at all out there, there’d be some kind of win-win deal to make.
Of course I tend to think that most Can’t Handle The Heat type arguments are mostly ones that flatter the fans of that team. We love to think we’re so big time that only the best of the best can succeed on teams we’re fans of.
So fast he could hit a ball up the middle and it would hit him in the ass sliding into second.

When I went to school in London
I was confused why people kept asking me if “you alright alright bruv”? … I would reply Yeah.. I’m fine why?
Dunn isn't going anywhere
I don’t see why any other team would take him right now. We have to hope that he returns at least close to normal. Plus, he told Hawk he was gonna win comeback player of the year.
i think hawk told him he was gonna win comeback player of the year.
dunn would be best served keeping his mouth shut and quietly working away for now.
Even if he did say that, that's encouraging news, right?
I mean, would you rather him say he’s done? heh. hopefully he believes what he’s saying, or is being told by Hawk. And actually puts in the work, ya know.
by Shoeless In SC on Jan 14, 2012 11:06 PM CST up reply actions
i'd be happy if he was saying that to himself,
not so much publicly.
he will have enough external pressure as is, no need for him to pile it on too.
for the record I was just being sarcastic
Obviously him saying that means jack shit until he proves it will action. Hawk said that he had a conversation with Dunn and that he could see it in his eyes or something like that.
This might make us feel a little better:
Adam Dunn – DH, Chicago White Sox
Dunn has had a horrific 2011, but he’s not this bad. His wOBA is nearly 100 points worse than his previous-worse season; his ISO is still only about half what it was in his previous-worst full season; and the same goes for his wRC+. In a nutshell, Dunn’s batted-ball rates are almost identical to his career rates across the board. And while he’s never been a BABIP monger, his .244 mark is still 50 points below his career mark. For one last bit of context: If Dunn magically improved his 2011 OPS by .300 points, it STILL wouldn’t match his career OPS. Even a modest return to form for Dunn should help him lock down this award.
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/2012-comeback-player-of-the-year-candidates/
talk to me when he can hit a fastball or a lefty.
until that happens i think he’s Dunn. Or Dung. I’d trade him for Soriano if the cubs evened out the money. at least he can still hit a fastball.
(gotta come up with some random ass trade with the cubs since zambrano/peavy can no longer happen)
