White Sox announce non-roster invites to spring training

The White Sox released their list of non-roster invites to their major league camp at spring training. Included are players who signed minor-league contracts: RHP Brian Bruney, LHP Leyson Septimo and Eric Stults, C Damaso Espino and Hector Gimenez, INF Dallas McPherson and Ray Olmedo and OF Delwyn Young.

Receiving invites from within the organization are OF Jared Mitchell, Jordan Danks, Brandon Short and Trayce Thompson, RHP Jacob Petricka and Brian Omogrosso, C Michael Blanke and Josh Phegley and INF/OF Jim Gallagher and Tyler Kuhn.

As it appears that there are bullpen spots open for competition, Bruney in particular has a strong chance of making the opening day roster. The lefties, Septimo and Stults, have an outside chance. The remaining minor league signings are roster filler for Charlotte.

Star-divide

As for those from within the organization, Danks may have the best chance at a roster spot. There is the possibility of an outfielder being needed for a bench role and Danks is arguably the best defensive outfielder in the organization.

As previously discussed, Omogrosso also has the chance to compete for a bullpen spot.

The remaining players are in major league camp to gain experience and provide bodies for spring training games.

Old news?

Buddy Bell was promoted to the title of Vice President, Player Development and Special Assignments. Bell rejoined the Sox in 2008 and has served as director of player development since 2009.

Nick Capra, in his 17th season with the Sox, will move up from his minor league field coordinator duties that he’s held for the past three seasons to take over Bell’s former title. Bell will continue to oversee all facets of the Sox’s player development and minor league system.

Roving pitching coordinator Kirk Champion, who has been with the Sox’s organization since 1989, will take over Capra’s duties.

Just looking at the 40-man again.

A position player who’s not on there yet is pretty much going to have to make the roster right? There’s only 13 position players on there and I don’t think I can envision a scenario where both Ozzie Martinez and Eduardo Escobar both make the team. Where’s that last bench spot going?

Yeah I read that.

But personally I’m not sure Danks is the best option. I think Lillibridge fills the good defensive outfielder role just fine. Danks if probably a better defender, but Lillibridge’s bat looks better (wow, never thought I’d type that a few years ago). I’d rather find someone cheap that can play the corners and fill in capably if someone gets hurt. I’d have to hunt for actual names.

by polodude017 on Jan 23, 2012 6:42 PM CST up reply actions

it would be miraculous if a team's fifth outfielder could fill in capably. if he could, he wouldn't be a fifth outfielder.

here are the candidates:

player not in organization
jordan danks
delwyn young
justin greene

it’s kind of irrelevant.

by larry on Jan 23, 2012 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

I'm gonna throw some names out there and I'm assuming none of these guys will cost much since they are all unsigned.

I’m thinking lefthanded and with a least a decent chance of having a worthwhile bat. I don’t know if it’s irrelevant considering there’s a pretty good chance at least one of Rios or Dunn is still terrible and both the projected outfield corners are unproven with De Aza also carrying the injury prone tag. Would be nice to have some kind of backup plan.

JD Drew
Johnny Damon
Carlos Guillen
Kosuke Fukudome

Obviously none of these are dream signings, but like I said above, the chances that one of Dunn, Rios, De Aza and Viciedo doesn’t struggle or get hurt are slim to none. It would be nice to have someone with a better bat than Lillibridge to fall back on.

Phegley?

IIRC, a few years ago, when Brian Bruney was asked by a reporter, “What type of pitcher are you?” He responded, “Right-handed.”

Can someone please explain...

why the White Sox Fan Confidence poll keeps rising? Have I missed something this off-season, or did everyone forget what happened last year?

You got some splan'n to do

As you move farther away from something it does not look as bad.
What is depressing is last years team.Slowly being replaced with hope for the future.
If you close your eyes, try to invision it.

Love Hector Gimenez

didn’t know he was with the Sox. He plays with my team at my hometown Tigres de Aragua in vzla. fantastic player… Tigres is playing the 1st game in the final as I type….9th final in the last 10 seasons. They will be facing Ozzie’s former team Tiburones de la Guaira who haven’t played in the final in the last 25 years….

Sorry…know nobody cares too much…got excited seeing Gimenez name there

For 2012 season: ALEX RIOS is my new TONY PENA.

KUHNNN

My favorite white sox minor leaguer Tyler Kuhn is gonna get a shot. Maybe he can hit his way onto this roster after shredding minor league pitching last year.
