BMO 2021: When Buehrle closes in on 300/3000

Your link: http://www.baseball-manager-online.com/login.pl

Your NL standings:

Bmo_medium

via i720.photobucket.com

Buehrle is 42 years old and entering his 22nd season. He is 2-0 and sports a 17 IP, 12 H, 2 BB, 12 K, 3 ER line at the moment. He is 14 wins and 164 K's away from becoming only the 12th pitcher to enter the 300/3000 club (Pedro entered the club while last pitching in 2015). Buehrle is currently the spot starter on the Brewers and is not likely to reach either summit in that position. Man up and put him in the rotation, Hazy! He's a proven winner!

In other news, the NL East is a tight 5 team race 2 months into the season, while the NL Central and West are becoming inaccessible to Houston, San Francisco (last year's NL Champion), Los Angeles, and Robo-Rado. St. Louis and San Diego are a little bit of a surprise here, as the Cards finished with 86 wins last season, missing the playoffs, and San Diego finished 4th in the West with a mere 66 wins. One-third of the way through the season, the Fathers are on pace to win 105 games. That'd nearly be a 40 win improvement over last year's squad. Can they keep it up?

(By the way, if someone can tell me how to resize the above photos so they are readable here, that'd be great.)

The CHW cut Jairo Garcia.

I didn’t realize that the CPU would release players, let alone players who made $14M.

spare 90 rated shortstop for anyone interested.

signed for $3.8M through ’24.
i like him, but juedes finally figured it out and wentz finally made a jump from potential to reality, so i have a good DH ready to go.

I'll help ya out.

Herrera is 25 years old and is 81 (82). He has 66 power and 72 eye. He’s got good defense and speed, so he’ll be a decent bench bat. He’s a bench player.

Montanye is 63++ (79) and he doesn’t have any flaws. He looks like he’ll actually be starting material for some team.
Alkorta is roster filler
Takahashi is 67+ (72) and actually has a good chance to make an impact in the bullpen. He’s only 20 years old, with 78/80/81 in the pitching cats. In A ball he had a 3.30 ERA last year with a .212 OBA and a 3.38 ERA with a .200 OBA this year.

For what it’s worth, I offered that trade as a starting point and the Yanks accepted it. I’m thinking the CPU saw value there.

I think that it'd be fair to cut the fat off the CPU rosters

70 and below players without potential and those others with sub-70 potential.

Look at any CPU position roster and you’ll see minor leaguers sharing playing time across several positions. We all know what that does to prospects.

I think Kaminski is a good player, but that contract would be too much for me to bear.

I plan on bringing up Kosaka in the next season or two, hence Sullivan’s one year deal. If he, Kaminski, had a season and a half left on the deal I’d be more apt to take it. I’m really high on Ramadi, especially with his potential, at just 17. So, to be perfectly honest, for Kaminski, I’m leaning towards no. If you don’t mind, I’d like to sit on the offer for a bit.

Obviously, if you find another taker for him, don’t wait on me.

you've rushed faustino (something about a bargain) and your bullpen sucks.

you’d probably be better served having your rotation pitch through more jams with higher pitch counts, but that runs the risk of injury.
that said, your corner outfielders are screwing you. though now that i look at it, i see that one of them is a 19 year-old first baseman yet to play at AAA.

I'm sitting here today, thinking about it.

I don’t know if it’s feasible. Suher went down for 3 weeks and my back up 3B for 2 and a half, and HE was starting for the injured #1 3B who won’t be back for another sim. On top of that, my starting catcher went down last sim and has another 16 days.

I don’t see the point of selling off assets to try and prop up what is most likely a lost cause.

Just giving everyone a heads up now

I’m going to move Buehrle back to my minor league system, just for the offseason – just in case his stats plummet, they release him, and he retires and disappears. I don’t really know what to expect post-tinkering. I’ll put him back on Sox Machine when the season starts back up again.

Also, in regards to the AL. Should I keep them in debt and completely keep them out of the Free Agent bidding process this off season? I’m all for allowing them to bid on players – I feel it keeps the competitive balance a little more even.

Thoughts?

Worst free agent crop ever

All because the computer teams don’t let anyone become a free agent — they just re-sign them for 6 years at $300k. We need to do something about those cyber-punks.

Suggestion

Pause the game. Release everyone age 25 or older in the minors of the computer teams. It will make the off-season more fun. Let the computer teams bid on them if you want; at least this way the free agency bidding will set market value for the talent.

even with their huge rosters, the NL is still significantly better than the AI's AL.

I dont think its that bad, our 95 overall team ratings are closer to 90 now.
big deal.

its an endless cycle, if we free up all the mediocre guys- many of us will grab several, then trade the bunch to the AI for one of their studs.
they get bigger rosters, we take the cream of the crop. as it is, we cant get those trading chips as readily and the AL will retain their better players as an indirect result.

If there's a way to limit roster size to like 25 batters and 25 pitchers total,

Or 30/30, that’d be a perfect fix I think. I’d be fine with computers bidding on FA then, because eventually they’d max out the number of players. I mean they’ve got like 60 batters and pitchers, that’s the biggest problem.

so the loss of kaye won’t really harm ’em.
seems relatively fair in that context.

by craigws on Feb 24, 2012 3:58 PM CST up reply actions

selling off a top line starter and a good reliever prospect with excellent potential?

that's pretty much how long it took me to rebuild from a similar position.

sell of the assets and go from there. though yeah, i wouldn’t have traded the reliever if i was the comp though.
change him to a slightly lesser player and it could be acceptable to rhub.

well this took an age. after trying for ages with the wires and the pilots,

i finally dealt with the highlanders (which is appropriate, i guess).

murray, minevich, assis, pebbles and five million
for
graziadei, waszak, andreski and mulrooney

reality for potential. besides waszak, who is already there. this allows them to compete now.
i admit to some shenanigans with pebbles. they kept saying they wanted a starting second baseman even though i was offering murray, so i got irritated and signed pebbles from the free agent pile to deal. that is why there is five million attached though. covers his contract. has anyone else had a similar difficulty with a cpu team not recognising an ‘IF’ player for his position?

mulrooney i am none too fussy about, i just clicked him at the end as a throw-in cos i saw he was on their trade block. surprised it went through.

by craigws on Feb 27, 2012 2:33 AM CST reply actions

probably because it dislikes your shenanigans

signing someone off the free agency list just to make a trade work with the AI is cause for veto in my book. If they really wanted Pebbles they could have signed him themselves. Now he is a 90 rated 2B in AAA behind the other 2B you traded him. I call shenanigans as this could set a precedent. I give you points for creativity though

it is bizarre that they wanted both Murphy and Pebbles though. The 5 million craig spent doesn’t impress me much since he still has 20 million and will likely get millions more in the playoffs.

i’ve signed guys and traded them to cpu teams before ftr. its a trick i learned from the master 3run.
i suppose that was before the czar days.

I had just signed James Green (SS-31 (84)) and then traded him. In that instance though I had an offer out for him, came home after a night of cards and drinking and decided to spend like crazy on Melky and Dostal putting my clubs finances in peril in the process.

if you hadnt noticed

when the season starts your expected revenue is way off the mark and the game thinks you will make much less than you actually do when its all said and done. this effects your budget and doesnt allow you to add any FAs until its basically the all-star break. By doing this, we trick the game a month in to letting us address injuries or fill holes created by trades.

by e-gus on Feb 28, 2012 5:16 PM CST up reply actions

Actually the more I look at it, the more I think Izturis is almost as valuable.

Certianly not worth a 100 potential prospect. Izturis is actually better than him right now. On the offensive side, and especially at defense. The only value Caniglia has over Izturis is that I could resign him. But I don’t wanna resign him at 13 mil.

For me, I needed to clear space in AA for my CF in AA who’s raking.

Uhmm yeah

All the AL teams are broke, we keep them that way.

This brings up a good point, I’m going to suggest we disallow the movement of cash to the computer in trades, because it isn’t a fair commodity since it is just taken away from them anyway.

I agree with Hazy on this one.

Sweetening the deal with cash only takes care of your half of the equation. I don’t think it’s fair that it can’t come back to hurt you by not giving them cash. I vote either we disallow it, or any cash you trade with the computer has to be doubly taken away by the commish after the trade is made.

by ScottyPods Ver2.0 on Mar 1, 2012 10:04 AM CST up reply actions

lost me too

im trying to deal with the computer right now.

i added 2M to sweeten the pot and they told me Im so dense I have small planets in orbit around me.

by e-gus on Mar 1, 2012 10:16 AM CST up reply actions

Hard to explain.

I mean if you make a trade with a CPU for 4 mil, the trade is good. Then Hazy comes in and takes 4 more mil from you, so it costs you 8 mil. I dunno, maybe that’s extreme, I just don’t think it’s fair that you can trade currency that they don’t actually get to use.

by ScottyPods Ver2.0 on Mar 1, 2012 10:17 AM CST up reply actions

Let's be real here.

I’m still giving it up.

If you have an issue with them not being able to use it, then you have a problem with it being taken away. Not with the fact that I’m giving it up.

SOB 2.0, you were an hour late and I took the deal anyway.

I wanted to upgrade my back up SS since Giarratano is ancient and Miller is fading fast.
So first I did this.

The St. Louis IX offer
Raul Sala 3B-28 (82)
Jeffery Monson RP-29 (81)
to the Detroit Tigers for
Doug Kaufer SS-30 (85)

Then I tried to deal Miller with Baltimore and Cleveland since they both wanted SS.
Not for that price they didnt, with comparable talent on board already. They both strung me along nicely though. An hour later and nothing.

Then that jackass scottypods comes back with a counter after like 4 days IRL for Izturis, so I take that. Because he can start for me.

The Arizona Giorgios offer
Cesar Izturis SS-42 (89)
to the St. Louis IX for
Gene Hamilton SP-18 (71++)

Now I have entirely too many SS in the system, pushing Milton Cole to A ball. I decide I want him to develop for his maximum AAAA career for some reason.

I finally find a taker for Miller. How KC was in contention with this guy starting at SS is beyond me.

The St. Louis IX offer
Darek Miller SS-32 (84)
to the Kansas City Monarchs for
Peter Meinhart RP-20 (79+)

Cole still is in A though, with Kaufer in AA for some stupid reason.
Fuck it, I’ll go with the senior brigade at SS. Combined age of 81 years.

I flip Kaufer for bullpen help to make up for the loss of Monson in the first deal.

The St. Louis IX offer
Doug Kaufer SS-30 (85)
to the Cleveland Warriors for
Clark Picard RP-32 (75)

If I got the offer for Izturis an hour earlier I’d still have Sala and Monson and be better overall.

by e-gus on Mar 1, 2012 10:58 AM CST reply actions

wow, the narrative is entertaining

the picture in my head is of you drinking out of a coffee pot with your eft hand grasping your forehead as you mouse through hours of trade proposals. So you got Jean-Luc Picard, Meinhart and Izturis for Sala, Kaufer, Hamilton and Miller. Do you want me to veto these for you?

nah, i made my bed.

Melky Cabrera CF-37 (89)
Jairo Gagnon CF-19 (74+++)
to the Milwaukee Brewers for
Brett Caniglia OF-29 (95)
Ben O’Reilly RP-26 (85+)

all in baby.

by e-gus on Mar 1, 2012 11:14 AM CST up reply actions

and now i flipped O'Reilly for my catcher of the future,

Graham Engleking C-23 (75+++)

Players actually peak around age 24-26, and then start a big decline around 29 or 30. http://joeposnanski.si.com/2012/02/10/aging-with-chart/

This season may be over for San Fran

But the young players have progressed mightily. Estes went from an 85 (91) to a 94 (97). Chillida went from an 85 (100) to a 92 (100). Chamberlain from an 84 (100) to 88 (100), Bolcar from 68 (96) to 76 (100). Deering from 92 (95) to 95 (97), O’Rourke from 73 to 77, Daniak from 75 (88) to 80 (88). And a few other increases here and there. Only Fuller and Wyrick saw a decline. No idea how Wyrick goes from 94 to an 87, during a career season at age 28. Kind of interesting.

do i go with the guy who can hit a little bit but sucks at D or the aged ss out of position who can pick it but cant hit a lick as the replacement? It doesnt matter, in my experience, injuries on the last sim mean skynet has deemed its just not your year. we both have the injury though, so thats weird.

the AL is on its way

Im currently working my way down the list, and am cutting guys from Detroit if you want to start on the bottom and work your way up, Hazy. I can probably knock it out in the next hour though as long as I don’t get interrupted too much.

I paused to show this one:
Julio Perez retired upon release to Free Agency

Everyone else so far has just been added to the FA pool.

27 and older for 300K in the AL are getting set loose.
With a few exceptions- Jason Kubel, terrible and in his 40s, gets to keep living the dream for example.

BMO dudes, maybe you guys can help me out

I joined an auction keeper fantasy league, four owners from the previous year bitched out because it cost too much and I am one of the 4 new owners. The 8 incumbant teams got to keep 5-8 players. Their remaining players along with the players from all four teams are put into an expansion draft pool which happens tonight. The way it works is a player can only be under contract for 3 years then their contract expires and they go into the auction draft. I have the first pick and we have….

Miguel Cabrera $34/final year
Adrian Gonzalez $25/final year
Kershaw $14/final year
Prince $31/second year

I am thinking Adrian for the cheap price, save 9 bucks off Cabrera…My hope is Jay Bruce 11/2 and Starlin Castro 11/2 makes it back to me on the snake….or Jered Weaver 17/2. I know it is tough to assess because you don’t have all the information but is this a sound strategy for the first pick? Or should I go cheap with Kershaw?

you'll be surprised how cheap you can get pitching

you might even regret some of your investments.

just constantly throw out SPs that you dont want to fill up everyone else’s rosters.
Let other people run out of money first or get down to $1 for each position remaining. It will happen.

I got Danks for $2 last season in a 12 team $260 auction league.
I think I paid $4 for Brett Anderson last season as well.

That is a good strategy, throw the top pitchers out there as early as possible and see what the market is…you think I overpaid on Pineda and Hamels? Obviously last night’s draft wasn’t an auction. On the closer front, what is the limit of what you would pay for a closer?

so it will only take 10 fake years to get out of the red.

Saw the Pirates vs Phillies in Bradenton today

The Phillies started Juan Pierre in LF and Scotty Pods in RF.

I thought you guys would appreciate that.

i can appreciate that neither of them are on the White Sox any longer

Yep

The Phillies’ lineup without Howard, Utley, and Pence is real ugly.

That stadium

is in such a weird location.

by Chilihead90 on Mar 12, 2012 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, kind of squeezed into a low-end neighborhood

We go to Ed Smith stadium in Sarasota tomorrow. I get the feeling it’s a similar location.

Hey, anyone have tips on fun stuff to do around Sarasota? Daytime stuff. The game isn’t until 1:00, so we have time in the morning. Other than the beach we haven’t come up with any good ideas.

by ThreeRunHomer on Mar 12, 2012 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, I stayed in Sarasota 3 nights last week

We went to the Siesta Key beach, which was fun. We ate lunch at a place called Gilligans or something. It was decent. And then a couple of the nights we hung out at a place called World of Beers, which is next to the Comfort Suites we stayed in. Unfortunately though, we were busy every day we were there, so we didn’t get to do many “fun stuff”, outside of meeting MLB players of course, heh.

Also, can you release the ridiculous albatross contract of Yusimero Petit?

9.1 mil for this year and next year and he’s rated 68. Dunno wtf the computer was thinking.

by ScottyPods Ver2.0 on Mar 12, 2012 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

i gave him that

because (had i kept him) it would have paid him 10.8mil more than that for that year. plus, it optimized his trade value to the comp

Not related to this conversation,

but what the Hell am I supposed to do with that extra $17.5M in proposed salary for the next 3 seasons? Do you not see that I am just under $100M already?

That’s not even mentioning the ridiculousness of sending three top SP prospects for him.

Unloading a 90+ pitcher at league minimum salary

Rico Martinez SP-23 (92) is on the trading block. Looking for long term SP prospects. Send me an offer.

by ozzieismyhomeboy on Mar 13, 2012 3:16 PM CDT reply actions

You actually may want to just resign him

That $4.9M is he asking for over the next 5 years or whatever is pretty damn affordable. That being said, if you have any other players you want to trade, hit me up. I am flush with pitching prospects.

he does look good yeah,

but it is a waste of resources trading for a reliever when you are resigned to sucking for a few seasons. you’ll likely draft a few good ones. better off trading for starters exclusively, then putting them in the pen if they don’t stick.

On something like a 18 or 19 game winning streak. Yet only 5 games ahead. I fear this could be the 3rd straight year where I am leading in to the summer, and then slip back.

Nomar Tavares and Abe Alvarez

just simply do not age. Vessels and Boneta has declined this year though. I have a great prospect to fill every single one of my aging starters, but I’m worried I may need to bridge a few of them in because I don’t want to have to throw 70-75 rating prospects in to a starting spot. My general rule has been only 80+ prospects can make the team.
