pete rose movie streaming on netflix: 4192, crowning of the hit king
I really enjoyed this documentary(except for the shmaltzy narrative bits).
I feel really bad for Pete Rose after seeing how he reveres baseball history so much in this movie.
Its a fine way to spend 2 hours.

eh, screw him.
he didn’t deserve cobb’s record. played a bunch of really crappy years there at the end.
Cobb and Rose both played 24 seasons
The only year you could really argue that he should have hung it up was 1986, the year after he broke the record. He played 162 games at age 41!!! Cobb was forced into retirement because Dutch Leonard accused him (and Tris Speaker) of well, hmmm, fixing games! Judge Landis didn’t have any evidence so Cobb was deemed a free agent and signed with the Athletics for two years to extend his records.

two years where his line was
.343/.419/.460.
rose’s last two years: .248/.367/.301.
i’ll say this about him, the guy knew how to take a walk.
I knew you would go to the well on those stats
Who cares about that anyway? You said verbaitm, “screw him, he didn’t deserve cobb’s record”. Bullshit he didn’t deserve it. He was not worthless those last two years, plus he was managing too. You don’t get to say Rose doesn’t deserve the hti record, you and your golden age of baseball boner.

It is not Pete Rose's fault that season were 162 games during his playing career
It is not Pete Rose’s fault that he played 17% more games than Cobb did AND Rose wasn’t promoted to the bigs until he was 22 compared to Cobb at 18. Rose’s stats aren’t as sexy as Cobb’s but he deserves that hit record.
Also, I know that Ty Cobb was a player manager as well.

he was worth -0.2 bWAR over those two years, so he was worse than worthless,
but i’m willing to admit that i dislike players prolonging their careers in the hopes of breaking some record or reaching some number. smacks of egotism (which, yes, cobb was certainly guilty of himself), putting himself over the team.
if johnny damon wasn’t still worth something i’d be annoyed at him for chasing 3000 because he thinks it’ll get him into cooperstown.
Just admit that you're wrong and move on
Cobb was obviously a better hitter than Rose and his prowess at the plate was still evident in his 40’s but Rose is deserving of the hit record regardless of your predilections

I will forgive you because you don't know anything
How is he not worthy when HE ACTUALLY DID IT? I don’t care about his WAR in the 80’s. He broke the record and is deserving of it. How many other people kept playing into their 40’s and never broke Ty Cobb’s hit record? NOBODY.

That last sentence makes no sense
edit: How many other people played into their 40’s and broke Ty Cobb’s hit record? NONE? Imagine if he had steroids at his disposal.

Almost everyone took greenies, correct?
Steroids > speed in coffee

Willie Mays took amphetamines
John Milner implicated him by saying Willie introduced him to an amphetamine cocktail known as “red juice”. Apparently this was always in his locker. Posnanski and Crasnick refer to him using amphetamine.

LIAR!
Willie Mays never even touched alcohol. You think this testimony from a know drug abuser sullies Mays?
While Milner became a vital contributor to the Pirates’ championship run, he also contributed to an undesirable culture of drug abuse and debauchery. After his playing days ended, Milner confessed to his addictions at the infamous Pittsburgh drug trials of 1985. Testifying for the defense, Milner told stories of how he had taken liquid amphetamines from Willie Mays’ locker when both played for the Mets, and how Stargell had given him greenies during his days in Pittsburgh. Milner also revealed that he once purchased two grams of cocaine during a game, completing the illicit transaction with a Philadelphia man in a bathroom stall. That tawdry scene epitomized how desperate Milner had become in feeding his addiction.

But Milner even says he never saw Willie ingest any of the “red juice”:
(This has been informative – never knew Willie and greenies/etc. were linked. You fucker, you.)
We're all here because we're not all there.
If you blindly believe that Willie Mays or any other player in his era didn't take amphetamines
when it was so prevalent and even encouraged, thats not my problem. I don’t care if Willie Mays took drugs or Pete Rose or the fact Babe Ruth injected liguid from sheeps testicles into himself thinking it would make him play better (he did and it made him ill). The steroid thing or HGH thing was a little too East German lab freak shit. (I know the nazi’s proliferated amphetamine).

You need to read an entire post before commenting "blindly".
We're all here because we're not all there.
I read it but you call me a liar which is kind of like calling me a thief
I am having an all in good fun conversation here. No matter what people think about Pete Rose, Ty Cobb was a far bigger motherfucker. He and Tris Speaker were originally forced into retirement because Dutch Leonard accused them of fixing games. They were both allowed to come back as free agents when Kennesaw didn’t find any evidence. But they did retire, so there must have been something there. Cobb signed with the Athletics and Tris Speaker with the Senators. PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE STAYED RETIRED BECAUSE SPEAKER’s WAR IN HIS FINAL YEAR WAS ONLY .3!!! When teams enable stars to keep playing after they became shadows of themselves in their 40’s, it isn’t the players problem. The players are just trying to keep the dream alive. Then foreigners go on internet communities and say the player doesn’t deserve a record, i call shenanigans. (IAM KIDDING ABOUT THE FOREIGNER PART) If the Reds, Phillies and Expos didn’t see value in keeping Rose around, they didn’t have to sign him to a contract.

If Cobb had stayed retired
Rose could have retired a couple of months into the 1983 season after beating Cobb’s hit record. If that had happened, Pete Rose wouldn’t have been exposed for gambling on the Reds as a manager. ITS ALL COBB’S FAULT!

I was calling you a "liar"
like I call KenWo a “DB”. Toughen up. cowboy.
We're all here because we're not all there.
Before you blindly tell someone to toughen up
you should read the sentence directly after the subject. Perhaps you should toughen up Heath Gyllenhall!

at least cobb owned his being a motherfucker.
i can respect that (besides the racist thuggery part).
rose is a wuss. charlie hustle, my arse.
Rose admitted to gambling
Being from across the pond I don’t blame you for not respecting Pete Rose.

What does this have to do with the hit record anyway?
Calling rose a wuss is just ignorant
It came from afar and traveled sedately on, a shrug of eternity
i was joking. kinda.
clearly you are a fan of mister rose. i have no affection for him at all. though that time he destroyed the catcher in the all-star game was pretty neat.
watch the movie, craig!
rhoob, you fought the good fight, man.
whats worse? betting on your team to win or fixing a game?
The fact that Pete Rose has 4192 hits
and you haven’t had even a handful at any level gives me much solace.

Whoops, I meant 4256 more hits
Here is my autographed ball between fellow HOFers Boggs and Frank Robinson

The coolest thing about that ball besides how he put the number of hits on it
is the fact that it is an A. Bartlett Giamatti ball, like if you look at a ball used today, it has Selig’s signature printed on it.
