White Sox acquire Greg Golson

Stop me if you've heard this one before: the White Sox acquired a fast, athletic African-American outfielder with contact issues, little power and a less than friendly relationship with walks. Greg Golson, obtained from the Kansas CIty Royals for cash considerations, is simply outfield depth for the minor leagues, which was needed after the season-ending injury to Brandon Short. He's sort of like Jerry Owens (who is now on Twitter!). Or maybe he isn't. I really just wanted to mention that Jer-bear is on Twitter.

Golson, a first round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies out of Texas high school in 2004, has had cups of coffee in the big leagues each of the last four seasons - for the Phillies (2008), Rangers (2009) and Yankees (2010, 2011).

Let's see some of Golson's accolades.

Prior to the 2009 season, Baseball America named the Austin, Texas, native as the "Best Athlete," "Fastest Baserunner" and "Best Outfield Arm" in the Texas organization. From the 2009 Baseball America Prospect Handbook: "(Golson) has progressed slowly, showing several premium tools but vexing Philadelpiha with his lack of feel for the game… Golson immediately became the best athlete in a Rangers system stocked with good athletes. His plus-plus speed plays very well in center field where he’s a plus defender with excellent range and instincts and a strong arm. Golson also has average power despire a poor contact rate."

He has eight hits and one walk in 42 career big league plate appearances, and is a career .261/.318/.380 hitter in 1,383 Triple-A plate appearances. Quite the legit arm, though. Check out this video of him easily throwing out Carl Crawford from right field when Crawford attempted to tag up from second.

Enjoy Charlotte, Greg.
