As the sun rises on Halloween, one thing becomes clear, tomorrow is November. With a heavy heart and several blocked arteries I signed off for the last time as an announcer and this morning I applied for unemployment.
I've had two loves in my life, my wife of nearly 50 years, Anne, and this great American pastime of ours. One of them has always been at my side and always giving me joy and the other cooks my dinner and watches judge shows all day. If you would grant me permission or allow me to do so, I would like to contribute to this website more often. My goal is that people read my thoughts and in doing so get better at understanding the game of baseball and reading too. One day there will be a way to evaluate players performance independently from their team's performance but until that day comes there will always be a need for color commentator.
My first thought is with all of the news coming out of Washington about the Redskin name, why is my old job called a color commentator? Seems dated and potentially racist to me. I don't see color, I see Dustin Perdroia as a great competitor with wonderful hustle not just some White man. Yasiel Puig isn't Cuban, he's enigmatic and fiery. Desmond Jennings is extremely athletic, I've never seen him as just an African-American. Let's get with the times people.
As the greatest band of the last 50 years, Semisonic, once sang "every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end."
