John Danks will began rehab stint Thursday at Birmingham

John Danks was back in Chicago after his last start in extended spring training, which Dan Hayes took as a sign that he might begin his rehab stint.

Sure enough, Danks will make his first rehab start of the season on Thursday at Double-A Birmingham. Via Hayes, Danks said he'll likely need several minor-league appearances before getting up to speed, even if he is effective.

Don Cooper: John Danks will need to pitch like Mark Buehrle

From the Easier Said Than Done Files:

"John is going to have to pitch a little more like a Buehrle," Cooper said. "That would be the best example here because they all know Buehrle. You know Buehrle at one time was throwing at 88-89 (mph). The last three or four years with us he was at 82-83 but still but still found the way to do it. That is what I think (Danks) needs to do."

I don't think direct comparisons to one of the great command artists of our time is going to make John Danks' rehab process any easier.

Rehab start yields the most encouraging John Danks news in weeks

John Danks still doesn't have a timetable on a return, and there still aren't any firm velocity readings. Still, after his rehab start on Monday, Robin Ventura sounded more optimistic about his 2012 Opening Day starter than he has since mid-March:

The 28-year-old tossed six innings in an extended spring training game on Monday in Arizona and manager Robin Ventura was encouraged by the results.

Ventura said his velocity is getting better -- it was clocked as high as 89 mph his previous outing -- and that Danks is scheduled for another start on Saturday.

"He threw fine, it's a positive report," Ventura said. "People that have seen him are having positive reports. He's just feeling stronger and it's probably coming out of his hand a little better."

John Danks in Chicago for Opening Day, and then...

John Danks spent the first day of the season in the dugout with his teammates, but he and Rick Hahn detailed what's in the immediate future for the 2012 Opening Day starter as he tries to come back from shoulder surgery. It starts with a minor-league game in Arizona on Thursday. Beyond that...

Danks is struggling to regain his low 90 mph velocity that he possessed prior to surgery Aug. 6. But Hahn and Danks said there is no time table for his recovery and that he'll continue to stay in Arizona to pitch in extended spring games until he's gained enough strength and velocity to start a minor league rehab assignment.

"I’ve done all the MRIs and checkups I’m supposed to do, and nobody has said anything to me about an injury," Danks said. "It’s still working up from surgery. I’m not even seven months. I’ll be seven months (post-surgery) at the end of this week. We put a pretty generous or quick time table on it. I was disappointed I didn’t meet it. I truly thought I was going to be ready. We just ran out of time. We’ll be able to take our time the best we can, or they’ll try to make me take our time. I don’t anticipate it taking that much longer."
