White Sox make first roster cuts

Six players cut, down to 55 in major league camp

The White Sox made the first cuts in the long journey down to a 25 man opening day roster. The players cut are: catchers Mike Blanke and Kevan Smith, first baseman Andy Wilkins, infielder Tyler Saladino and pitchers Charlie Leesman and Jake Petricka.

Obviously, none of these players were any threat to make the roster. However, it does shed some light onto the organization's thinking regarding these players.

Leesman had offseason knee surgery and is out until midseason. Petricka's potential continues to fade. Wilkins is still just a guy. Blanke and Smith departing confirms the catching depth chart of Tyler Flowers, Hector Gimenez and Bryan Anderson/Josh Phegley.

The most interesting of the cuts is probably Tyler Saladino. Last year around this time, he was headed the other way, as the White Sox brought him into major league camp after he impressed the coaching staff during early cameos in spring training games. After that, he was being talked up as a possible call-up during the 2012 season. Now, in addition to starters Jeff Keppinger, Alexei Ramirez and Gordon Beckham, he's apparently got a slew of infielders ahead of him on the depth chart: Angel Sanchez, Carlos Sanchez, Brent Morel, Conor Gillaspie and Marcus Semien.
