I spent Monday and Tuesday in Glendale. The Sox played the Giants and team USA while I was there.
First some things on the Major League team.
Even though the temps were 65 to 70 degrees, our two cubans wore hoodys or pullover jackets the whole time.
Thin blood I guess.
Carlos Sanchez was rotating with Beckham in fielding drills. Being treated in all ways like the other guys on the 25 man roster. He is a switch hitter but seems more comfortable from the left side. They definitely have plans for this kid.
If they break with five outfielders, which they won't, Then Blake Tekotte is the fifth guy. While I was there he played more innings than anyone. good range, nice arm and he hits the ball hard. they were not all falling in but they will. I don't see how Jordan Danks ever plays in Chicago again.
We were playing The Giants so I got to talk to some of their fans about Gillaspie They had only nice things to say. He was blocked by Sandoval and that was not going to change. So far he has looked great. He is also getting time at fist base.
Tyler Fowers is clearly in charge of the pitching staff and appears very comfortable.
John Danks was all smiles after his outing as well as Coop.
Gavin was in mid season form. He schooled a number of the USA players. Man is that lineup is stacked.
I saw Simon Castro last year and this and the comparison is like night and day. Last year he nibbled, this year he attacked. He looked great.
Keppinger hits everything. Everything. In batting practice he hit every pitch, no foul bays, everything on the nose, to all fields. Quite entertaining.
2012 Draft
Hawkins. This kid loves to hit. Buy far the most power in the Minors. Big Rainbow home runs to all fields.
Barnum. I saw him in the cage with Manto. Jeff was showing him that his two part swing was pulling his head off the ball. right after this he was DL'ed.
Beck. Looks like a linebacker. Also seems to be a loner.
Joey. Hangs out with Hawkins. He looked a lot like Chris Getz. 5' 11" at the most. very hitterish.
Two other players of note Brandon Brennen and Kyle Hansen stood out.
Old friends.
Wes Whistler. How can I miss you if you don't go away?
John Shelby III.
A few other things No sign of Mitch Mustain, so I guess that experiment is over. Myles Jaye I would say was the most athletic and nimble of all the pitchers. Lastly two non prospects that I like are right fielder Micheal Earley and catcher Bryce Mosier.
That's it.
