Indians 14, White Sox 3: When it rains, it pours

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Weather far the from the ugliest aspect of series opener as Tribe piles up runs, and quickly

The White Sox trailed 4-0 before they even got to hit, and that was only the second-quickest slide of the night.

The Indians led 8-2 when a brief downpour delayed the game by 17 minutes in the top of the fifth. Charlie Leesman had allowed a solo homer and two walks before the delay, and when play resumed, he picked up right where he left off. The first nine Indians reached, and by the time Dylan Axelrod ended it with a double play, the Sox trailed 14-2.

Fortunately, Axelrod completed the last four innings wihout allowing a run, so he actually pitched five scoreless innings. He did allow two inherited runners to score, which meant Leesman allowed seven runs (three hits and four walks) without recording a single out.

In all honesty, I paid partial attention at best, because I was transcribing audio. So I'm just going to drop bulet points, and you can fill in the rest if you care:

*John Danks was hammered early, finishing with an ugly line: 4 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 2 HR. Another run could've been unearned since Alejandro De Aza didn't help him out in left.

*Independent of De Aza's miscue, the Sox committed three errors, including Marcus Semien's first, Conor Gillaspie's 17th (this one at first base), and Dayan Viciedo's fifth.

*Ryan Raburn did plenty of damage himself: 3-for-3 with a homer, double, walk and five RBI.

*The Sox did complete a relay from the left field corner to cut down a runner at the plate and end the fourth.

*Paul Konerko hit his 11th homer, and De Aza contributed an RBI single before getting forced out at second on a pop-up that dropped.

*Miguel Gonzalez picked up his first major-league hit by dropping a single into left field.

*Robin Ventura didn't have much to say about it, either:
