Orioles 3, White Sox 1: Road skid hits seven ... again

Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

Jose Quintana gives up three solo homers, but punchless offense the bigger reason for East Coast winlessness

On Aug. 4, the White Sox returned home after going 0-7 on a road trip -- the longest winless road trip in franchise history, in fact.

Exactly one month later, the Sox started yet another road trip 0-7. But with three left against Baltimore, they have a chance to break their own record.

If the lineup performs like it did tonight, it's in the bag.

Baltimore's Miguel Gonzalez, Tommy Hunter and Jim Johnson combined to throw a five-hitter (five singles) and  take the opener in a breezy two hours and 34 minutes. Jose Quintana pitched well on his end, but three solo home runs ended up being one more than the Orioles needed.

Neither team spent much time forming rallies, but the Sox only had the third inning to point to as anything resembling a success. Trailing 1-0 since the first when Adam Jones homered, Conor Gillaspie and Dayan Viciedo led off with singles, and Bryan Anderson loaded the bases with a walk.

Up came Alejandro De Aza. He took a changeup for ball one, but then swung at a good changeup tailing off the plate. He could only ground it to J.J. Hardy, who took it right to the bag and started a 6-3 double play. A run grudgingly scored, but De Aza wouldn't get the RBI, and the Sox didn't even put another runner in scoring position all night.

Quintana was then taken out to left field two more times in the fifth. Hardy blasted a rolling curve to lead off the inning, and Brian Roberts won an eight-pitch battle by connecting on an outer-half fastball to cap off the scoring.

Addison Reed pitched for the first time since Aug. 27 and looked refreshed, striking out the side in order for the first time all season. So, there's that.
