BMO 2018-2019: Is the Economy Broken?

The 2018 season is nearly upon us and clearly something terrible must have happened in the world. I'm not sure if it is zombies, financial corruption, new baseball rules with questionable enforcement, or if customers would rather see a team full of clones roaming the ballparks. The average payroll in our league is around $55 Million. That seems a little low since entering 2014 in real life there are only 2 teams with payrolls lower than that. Over one third of teams have a negative cash position. I'm not sure what can be done to fix the crumbling economy, get fans back into the seats, and fill our coffers with piles of cash but it would be nice if it happened soon! Maybe we are destined to soldier on struggling to meet the increasingly high demands of our players.

On the bright side of things the league seemed more competitive this year or maybe it was a mirage and I was just fooled into thinking that as my team was close to resembling a competitive team this year.

A very quick look around the league:

AL East - Toronto has been at the top of the division for a few years now with a truly impressive offense. Baltimore and Tampa still look like they can compete. Boston and New York look a step back but certainly could jump into it with a move or two.

AL Central - Minnesota, Cleveland, and Kansas City all look like strong teams. Detroit appears to have fallen on tough times after a good run. Chicago hasn't finished better than 4th since the inaugural year of BMO, maybe next year.

AL West - Los Angeles under new management turned it around and jumped out to a lead in the division. As the game returned from a couple of dark days Oakland surged in front, then held on and cruised to another World Series title.

NL East - Atlanta was the class of the AL but had a tough division opponent in Philadelphia. New York seems to be turning things around and should be tough in the coming year. Florida and Washington don't look to have enough to get the job done.

NL Central - St. Louis won the division but seemed to have a mass exodus of talent. Houston and Pittsburgh look like the toughest teams right now.

NL West - San Francisco keeps riding its young ace to division titles. Colorado always has an offense that keeps them in it. San Diego looks to bounce back after a missing the playoffs for only the second time in 9 years. Arizona and LA will probably still finish in the bottom of the division.

We are in the middle of the offseason so trades and FA signings could still change the landscape a bit.

Do you want to get in on this?

You should! We have plenty of openings and are always willing to take on new owners. Drop us a comment below and we will set you up with a team.
