Is Torii Hunter an Angel?
The main page of MLB.com seems to think so, though the link goes only to his player page right now.
It takes about 2 minutes to type a couple of paragraphs and get them posted online... Perhaps someone is at MLBAM is having some fun while his bosses are away for the holiday?
Doesn't make sense to me. I suppose they are trying to get out from under the dumb Sarge Jr. contract, and have the ability to package some of their young arms with him to the fish for Miguel Cabrera.
On the bright side, now we get to overspend for an aging middle reliever and The Legend.
Update [2007-11-22 2:12:50 by The Cheat]: Not that I should doubt MLB.com, but the LA times is reporting that the deal is believed to be in the 5/$90MM range.

This is good and bad.
It could be catastrophic
Then they're down to Jones and Cameron who I figure are something like Plan F and G in their plans. They could conceivably be looking at re-upping with Erstad.
id rather go owens in center
Re-upping Erstad is far from the worst thing
That's how bad things are -- signing Erstad to $6M deal would be better than the almost all the apparent alternatives at this point.

You're right
Agreed.
by Shoeless In SC on Nov 22, 2007 9:37 PM CST up reply actions
How could they possibly bring Erstad or Owens
That would be apocalyptic.
Andruw Jones would make it all okay.
I absolutely hate that guy
if our options are down to darin effin erstad, bring Pods back
Haha... damn, old man!

Would we rather overpay Hunter or Aaron?
If Fukodome really only wants $10M a year
by hitlesswonder on Nov 22, 2007 1:45 AM CST up reply actions
Dye should be in left anyway.
On the other hand...
This is what it looks like
Bye Torii
PLZ KENNY PLZ!!!

I would like to hear
Hunter's not stupid
Even though the Rangers have what is now considered a Top 5 farm system, it's hard to have too much more hope about their immediate future than the White Sox or Royals.
If I could, I would put money on the Angels winning a title during Hunter's contract against the chances of all the other (non-dodger) clubs who were courting him.
but he went to the team that made the best offer
it's not like he chose a smaller offer in order to go to team more likely to win
Woa
I'm out here in Hawaii-originally from Chicago- and just heard that he signed with the Angeles. Have to admit I was bummed out because I've been mightily impressed with his play on the Twinkies. Yet, $90MM seems a bit much.
by egardne on Nov 22, 2007 2:59 AM CST up reply actions
basically, he's a candidate to age very poorly
Does A Jones fall into the same category then?
by egardne on Nov 22, 2007 3:19 AM CST up reply actions
No
And I guess I should also add that Jones, up until last year, has been a much better offensive player.
Unfortunately, my confidence in the people running this team has hit an all time low. One thing Kenny hasn't done in his tenure was overpaid for not-great relievers. I didn't think that was something he was going to do, as he's always built his bullpens through scrap-heap signings and nifty trades, but giving 4/$19 to Linebrink takes that away.
I tried to avoid much of the doom and gloom but damn. I really had faith that Kenny -- to put it bluntly -- knew what he was doing, but damn, it's hard to think that right now.
Not that we were going to get Andruw Jones before
I'm sure Kenny will restore your faith in him...
By the way...
wasn't he a Free Agent at the time?
it must've been; I remember him talking with other teams
So what does our bullpen look like now?
Logan
MacDougal
Thornton
Linebrink
Jenks
It seems like once Kenny heard that Hunter was going to sign with the Angels, he decided the throw money at Linebrink. Aardsma, Masset, and Sisco all need to be traded.
That Hunter, what a weasel
Haha, WSCR 670 "The Score" is saying...
Without the roids, he is mediocre...
I would rather give Brian Anderson another shot than add an old, expensive, and mediocre hitter.
Scioscia said that Matthews will play all outfield spots while giving Vlad and Garret Anderson time at DH according to this article.
Juan Rivera...
According to the Associated Press, it's 5 / $90...
And per ESPN.com:
I guess this would be great news...
Time for some good news...
The Angels came out of nowhere..
by ckimcircles on Nov 22, 2007 9:29 AM CST reply actions
I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with Owens in
by ckimcircles on Nov 22, 2007 9:31 AM CST reply actions
I wouldn't be surprised if we signed Rowand now...
Any rumors on the market for Cameron?
Speaking of rumors, is it unusual that 12 hours after the news broke the only identified source for the Linebrink signing is Bruce Levine's report? Shouldn't corroborating reports (as with Hunter's signing) exist by now if there's a deal?
It sounds like the signing will be official...
I'm so sick of these rumors
by ckimcircles on Nov 22, 2007 10:00 AM CST up reply actions
disinformation
The press can't say they got lied to because they rely on getting scoops. You expose a guy for misleading you, and you'll never get a "scoop" again. Plus the guy will throw you under the bus anyway.
No wonder the press are jerks sometimes, when they get used by players, agents and/or management.
I was always on the fence
Kenny is screwed now...

How messed up would it be...
How about this?
CF Kosuke Fukudome
SS Orlando Cabrera
DH Jim Thome
1B Paul Konerko
RF Jermaine Dye
3B Josh Fields
LF Juan Rivera
C A.J. Pierzynski
2B Danny Richar
Sign another reliever (Yasuhiko Yabuta?) and use the money saved from not overpaying a top CF'er on another starter (Bartolo Colon?). Stay cheap with the bench (Owens, Bourgeois, etc.).
this arrangment..
Hopefully the sox could pry rivera away and fukudome could sign up with the sox for a 3 year/team option for 4th year contract. Everything about that guy is certain you will upgrade there.
by Eternalkonflict on Nov 22, 2007 12:05 PM CST up reply actions
The guy is playing RF in Japan
I don't know
Congrats, Kenny
Rowand fits better anyways
The hell with him.

Definitely more to come
Darn!
by White Sox Randy on Nov 22, 2007 12:11 PM CST reply actions
I don't fault KW here.
It's gonna be good to be an Angels fan. But, I have a feeling KW will come out ok. He got the Sox a decent reliever without giving up any players atleast. It's not that bad.
Sign ARow now and maybe they will trade Jose and Paulie ? Atleast it's getting exciting !
by White Sox Randy on Nov 22, 2007 12:19 PM CST reply actions
angels can have hunter....
just a few questions
anyway we can pry coco from Boston?
who willl start in LF?
4-5th starter? please sign someone to a one-year deal because i already have a case of the gavin floyds
by tubesox on Nov 22, 2007 12:22 PM CST reply actions
Great news!
I'd rather see Owens/Anderson with Fukodome in left than overpay for anybody.
He can't play center
its time to go all out
yabuta
I don't be surprised if this guy does...
It was a stupid signing. It's almost like once Kenny heard that Torii Hunter was signing with the Angels, he threw a bunch of money at Linebrink because he doesn't plan on offering any other CF'er (like Andruw Jones) a 5-year, $75 million dollar contract.
...comes to america
No deal is official but the Royals are believed to have an agreement pending with Yabuta for a multiyear deal to join the bullpen. Everything hinges on Yabuta passing a physical examination when he comes to the United States, probably in the next several days.

It is fate, my friend
"It is fate, my friend...nay, it is the DESTINY of Chicago's South Side Baseball Empire to acquire but one man, one god, to patrol centerfield on the hallowed grounds known as U.S. Cellular Field. Any other deal Kenny Williams tries to pursue will be struck down by divine intervention, because as we all know, the Sox best and only option is to bring back the ultimate grinder, number tirty-tree, The Legend, Aaron Rowand."
(Raising your beer mug in a toast to Legend, all Super Fans respond):
"Daaaaa Legend."
Enough sad faces!!!
Fuku, Crisp and Clement
I second that...

I actually like the Crisp idea, or
yeah
* checks elias rankings
no A/B; he doesn't need draft picks
* checks bb-ref
.367 OBP, wait he plays in coors
* checks bb-ref splits
.330 road OBP
OK!
i'm sure he is a bit better
Center fielder, plus defense, decent arm,
Just depends what they'd want for him. Maybe worth exploring.
explore away
Joe Kennedy dead at 28...
The cause of Kennedy's death could not immediately be determined, Lapa said. Kennedy, 28, pitched for five teams in seven big-league seasons, going 43-61 with a 4.80 ERA. He was a free agent this winter.
That sucks a lot
All I can think of is his son. Man. So the Linebrink signing is given some perspective...

Sox looking at Rowand, Crawford, Cabrera, Coco...
Williams optimistic he can land player to make an impact"
Kenny's comments on Hunter signing with Angels...
"All along, we have been talking to other free agents, as well as positioning ourselves in the trade arena," Williams added. "So I'm still optimistic we can make an impact."
Also, the White Sox offer to Torii Hunter was 5-years, $75 million...
Did you see Hunter had spoken
Oh, it's probably a "keepin' it REAL" thing I wouldn't understand...
seems hunter praises whoever shows him the money
sm:
"Two reasons: I'm a different person than those guys, and my game is different than those guys," Hunter said. "And I'm not with the Cubs. It's the White Sox. That's totally different."
speaking of keeping it real
http://youtube.com/watch?v=PztF3GWMO-M
:p
I thought this guy might be a good
Nope.
Looks like the Reds are going to nab him
Does the Linebrink signing...
Just think about how much Jenks will cost when he hits free agency...
It looks better in terms of $$ spent
Haha, it's even crazier...
The deal, which is pending a physical, includes a club option for a fifth year that can bring the total value of the package to $57 million.
Let me guess...
To pay for all of this "talent," perhaps the owners should consider "pay urinals" at their parks. I'd go with charging $1 per whiz, or offer a $5 no-limit "All Day Spray" pass.
