Mack....?
Why do i dislike this guy so much... i mean not that sweeney is getting it done (still like ryan) or luis terrero or pablo.... oh wait shit... we don't have any other outfielders. How long before Jerry owens is up...?

Jerry Owens: BA .283   obp   .375   20 sb 6 cs

has no power though 0 hr and only 6 of his 41 hits have gone for extra bases. All doubles(6)

this stat line looks really nice

BA .268 6hr 18 rbi 6sb 0 cs 10 2b's 772 ops

it's the 23 yr old starting center fielder for the Diamondbacks..... Arizona must have good scouting.... cause it would have been nice to ship anderson or owens instead of young

mack is in there
because he rakes against zambrano. i'm not sure there are many other guys he has an OPS of over 1.000 against - certainly not in as many ABs as he has against carlos.

ops 1.093
to be exact.... i wasn't saying he shouldn't be in the lineup.... i was just trying to put my finger on why i dislike mack so much.... why doesn't he play the infield...? just kinda of making questions to everyone

funny because earlier they showed the "highlight" of marte walking in the winning run against the cubs in 2004, completing their sweep. marte had worn out his welcome in this town - don't you remember the boos he got whenever he came into the game in late 2005?

Totally not sold
on Masset's big league usefulness.  Tons of pitchers have live arms and no clue how to pitch.  Masset is a poster boy for that group.  Seems like AAA would be the place to either get that sorted or disappear entirely.

WGN TV
they consistently miss the first pitch of innings.  I'm actually surprised when they get back in enough time to see the first pitch of the inning.  And last inning, the first pitch happened to be a ball in play.  Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I think you should be able to get back in time to see the first pitch every inning...

They did it again.

by CWSKeith on May 20, 2007 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Larry -- I'm kid you not
They consistently miss the first pitch -- this happens probably once every two innings (rough estimate).  I'm not overexaggerating.  Anyone else care to comment?

by CWSKeith on May 20, 2007 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The exact reason I'm watching the CSN right now...
Every single feed, whether its WGN HD or just plain old WGN, home or away, they miss the first pitch back from a commercial break.  I'm surprised when I witness the first pitch.

by rebstock on May 20, 2007 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll add my voice to the chorus
It's amazing how often they miss the first pitch, and have been doing so for years, and yet they've made no effort to correct the problem.  I think they even missed a homer once and came back as the hitter was rounding second.

Masset
I think I like him more than a lot of others do.  Like BMac, I just don't see him as a reliever.  He throws four-five different pitches when in the bullpen, all you really need are one or two to succeed.  I think he needs to be starting somewhere, even if that means down with Charlotte.

Massett
I saw a few Blah-Massett comments above, but if he's going to stay 93-94 with decent control, he definitely has starter potential.  His slider is a weird pitch and doesn't appear to have much movement at all, but still stands in good contrast to his tailing fastball.  Curve is pretty good though.

Man, Soriano just had another awful at bat.  Paulie's AB in the top half was equally weak.  He is missing so many hittable pitches right now.

Z
I've been reading Under The Knife and Will said something about Zambrano dropping his arm...and wow is it obvious.  I can't believe the Cubs are letting him go out there with his mechanics looking like that unless they're planning on letting him go after the year's end.  But that doesn't make sense either.  Protect your assets, man.

That was a real rough top of the 4th....

by colintj on May 20, 2007 2:32 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

probably too soon
but i'm feeling the same way.  it's amazing how much better masset looked in his long relief performance against cleveland and now today than he has in short relief stints.

by Ryno on May 20, 2007 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dn...
I usually don't buy the whole It's-Hard-To-Move-To/From-The-Bullpen, especially because the stats show how much easier it is to bump your K rate and lower your ERA from the bullpen, but both McCarthy and Massett seem to demonstrate that starting is easier under some circumstances.  In any case, I really like what Massett is showing right now.  Good location, solid mechanics, great tail on his fastball with the ability to sink it and cut it as well, plus that deuce.  Give him a change up and he's definitely starter material, right?

From personal experience, I always got nervous as hell when I came in to close, but being able to just gas it every pitch really did help me get over it.

Point taken
about the lineup, but he looks to me like a pitcher who has a good idea of what to do with the stuff he has.  And what he has is pretty decent.  I definitely don't see him as anything better than a 3 starter, but I like a guy who has an idea of how to pitch.

So what do you do?
I admit I always thought the Masset as a starter was horseshit. Now I agree he looks way more effective as a starter. Perhaps he takes Floyd's spot and you move him and something else for a legit OF around trade deadline?

by Tdogg on May 20, 2007 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

no one is going to take floyd
until he shows that he can pitch in the majors.
Stay grindy, my friends.

by larry on May 20, 2007 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really
It makes it that much easier to move Garland, because we're back to the 6 starter dilemma.  I'd love to be able to trade Floyd instead, but I agree with Larry.  He keeps flunking when he gets up to the bigs.  Not a lot of demand for AAAA players.

I don't even know who I'd target as an OF, anyway.  The guys I could come up with weren't worth the price or weren't available.

Random out-my-ass: Garland for Lastings Milledge.

by colintj on May 20, 2007 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not trading Garland
I'm trying to trade Contreras.  Maybe Minaya still has some Latin fever.

by CWSKeith on May 20, 2007 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kenny!
I only say Garland because it seems like that's the guy whose name keeps coming up in Trades That Almost Were.  Contreras could be 53 for all we know and his control and K rate are slipping.

by colintj on May 20, 2007 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah
it's much more likely that 1) we'll simply hold onto all these guys and figure it out later and 2) we're far more likely to trade someone like contreras than a young guy at this point.
Stay grindy, my friends.

by larry on May 20, 2007 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah
i would definitely prefer to unload contreras.  his k/9 has dropped precipitously.

by colintj on May 20, 2007 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

the
way garland is throwing the ball coupled with the fact that he always gives you 200IP+, and an ERA+ of 110 on average over the past years and is still relatively young(27); He is worth more than a troubled and currently injured OF in Milledge, and I like Lastings. The mets have soured on him, i'd rather KW target Carlos Gomez(his stance is very vernon wells/ alex rios) or Fernando Martinez and a good young arm, maybe Guerra. I'd rather we move mark if we're out of it or let him walk and extend Jon.

Ideally if jose can keep up this performance or even just keep his ERA south of 4.50 this season, he still has a ton of value at 10mil for the next two years.

Jon
Javy
Danks

and two of Masset, Floyd, Haeger, Broadway, Gio, Egbert, Russell. Looks good to me moving beyond '07.

So I could be wrong. But he didn't do the usual Thome let it fly swing. He could have been fooled, and was feeling for the pitch, but it seems more likely that he's just cut down on his hack to save his injury.

What a difference in announcers
I'm watching the comcast feed with Kasper & Brenly, and these guys are an absolute pleasure to listen to compared to Hawk & DJ - I haven't had to cringe once the whole game, and these are the Cubs guys.  Why the hell do the Sox, playing in a major metropolis with one of the country's highest levels of college grads per capita , have some Foghorn Leghorn cracker as their announcer?  He lasted one year as announcer for the Yankees, and we've been stuck with him for twenty plus.

by ChicagoPete on May 20, 2007 3:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Brenly
Kept going on about OBP and taking pitches two days ago.  It was amazing.

by colintj on May 20, 2007 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cotts tipping
they also implied the Sox knew exactly what Cotts was going to throw.  This makes perfect sense, cause even when he had great stuff he was still getting whacked hard like today.  The NL probably hasn't caught up this year, hence his great #'s up till today.

by ChicagoPete on May 20, 2007 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Could be
I've seen Cotts pitch alot this season, and he's best when he's getting his curveball over. Not the slurve he threw on the southside, but a true big breaking curve.

He only threw it once in that inning, and not until after the slam.

Too many 91 MPH fastballs. As we're all familliar, you don't really need to be tipped to hit that pitch.

The Chicago White Sox
Team Batting average up to .226 after The series against the Cubs. Up from .222 after the Yanks.

OK, a little math is in order. Assuming this improvement continues linearly,

(122 (games left) / 3) * .004 + .226,

the Sox Batting Average will be .388 at year end.

Greg Walker is a REAL genius!!!!!!!
