More trade rumors

[Robothal]

The Brewers, leading the NL Central by 8 ½ games, are kicking around the idea of trading for White Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle -- a move that, while a longshot, would make sense. ... Approximately 10 teams are on Buehrle, including the Mets, Braves, Mariners and Buehrle's expected long-term choice, the Cardinals.
*****

And earlier in the day:

[Joe Cowley]

According to a source close to the situation, negotiations between the Sox and Buehrle's camp have been exhausted, with Williams believing he has no choice but to trade the left-hander, ... At least seven teams have made serious contact with Williams, with three actually having the resources to pry Buehrle from the White Sox. The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets were the leading contenders until this weekend, with the Boston Red Sox now becoming the front-runner. ... According to the source, the Red Sox not only want to keep Buehrle away from the New York Yankees and are willing to offer him a contract extension in the five-year range he is seeking, but they have a farm system loaded with players in whom the White Sox are interested. Starting pitchers Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden are on the White Sox' radar, as well as speedy outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and shortstop Jed Lowrie.

And look inside for Kenny's take.

Star-divide

So, are you planning on trading Mark Kenny?

"Not today."

...

"Something's gotta happen. I'm tired of watching this. Slapped in the face, hit upside the head, whatever you want to call it -- change needs to happen, and change is going to happen. When that happens, I don't know. We have to do our due diligence. ... There's no energy. There's no production, offensively. The starting pitching is probably the most consistent aspect we have, so if you have to do some reshuffling and help the deck, at least if you have that in tow, it makes it a ... lot easier."

Coop says we couls sign Mark in the offseason even if he's let go. How about that?
"Sure, you can always hold out hope for that, but we're not working toward that."

BTW, Kenny says 10 players on the roster already have been inquired after by other teams.

It doesn't matter what happens
KW will screw it up.  MB for a minor-leaguer and last round draft pick.  It's part of his vision.  No one but him understands it and he's sick of explaining it.  I think eventually the Sox will have 25 pitchers.

By the way, what ever happened to Ordonez, Rowand and Carlos Lee?  I'm glad they passed on Soriano so we could keep McCarthy.

Maybe KW will bring in Ryne Sandberg?  Ozzie Smith at SS to shore up the middle.  Lance Johnson anyone?

Who to believe?
  1. "negotiations between the Sox and Buehrle's camp have been exhausted."
  2. A source close to Mark Buehrle said Friday he was "99 percent sure" the pitcher would be in a Sox uniform next season.

by ballyb on Jun 24, 2007 4:29 PM CDT reply actions

Believe both
The Sox will probably match any (reasonable) offer, and Buehrle truly does want to stay.

It won't be Buehrle traded.

That's Russian roullette.
I say that the offers he will get in the off season will be stratospheric. They won't MATCH a long, long Zito-like contract. I'd get what I could NOW.

Either sign him now or trade him now. Too risky any other way.

And I LOVE THE GUY.

Agreed. Buehrle needs to be resigned this year...

Interesting, talented system.  What might Doug Melvin offer?  If Corey Hart, Ryan Braun, or Yo Gallardo enter the discussion, it's worth considering dealing with the Brewers.

they should be untouchable
and if I ran the Brewers they would be.  Can't hurt to ask to see the extent of Melvin's interest.

The number of teams mentioned in the rumors is encouraging.  Clearly Buehrle is perceived as a valuable commodity, and ought to bring back something good.  Maybe untouchables are more touchable than we realize?

I would guess that crazy things happen
when you're in contention for the 1st time in a long time.

Weak division. Next year, Cubs prospects looking up (?) and Cards won't be down long. Who knows when the Brewers will be in this situation again.

Plus w/ Buehrle, they'd have a fine rotation for the postseason.

Lastly, NOBODY would make a better BRATWURST than MB in the Sausage Races. I'd make a special trip up to watch.

had not considered the sausage race factor
Buehrle would be amazing in the land of beer and cheese.  Also, if he stuck around, he could be a thorn in the side of the Chicago National League team for years to come.

I could warm up to a Sox-Brewers deal.

You choose to rob Kansas city of their shit pitchers, forget that you have to put eight more players out on the field, and thus again your first five players in the draft are again pitchers. The Sox are absolutely fucking terrible, and if you stay and don't change this team, the CELL will be emptier than you have ever seen it come next year. Absolutely true
The Sox talent level in the minors is enough to get somebody fired (I guess it already did). After competing for the playoffs for the most part 2001-2006 and a world championship in 2005, suggestions that Kenny should be fired should be laughable. But they aren't, because the minors are simply abysmal. They can't even generate replacement level players for DH or LF. As much as I like overreacting, I still can't  say I think KW should be fired. But I can understand how someone would think that. And right now, he is looking like the 5th best GM in the AL Central. Every time I see Masset pitch, I become less sure that the Sox will get decent talent back in a firesale.

hey Chisox
The minor league fiasco is KW's fault !!! As GM he is responsible for all aspects of the organization. And besides-- before he was GM, he was the top minor league guru for the Sox. As far as the players mentioned, only Konerko looked like they wanted to be there. Thome is beginning to look like Greg Luzinski did in the 1983 playoff games, Iguchi looks  like he was given a Vulcan mind meld, and Uribe wanted to play dancing with the stars with the Cub players today. The bench couldn't even beat the Milwaukee sausages if the played against them. The trade that KW should make, but won't is with Tampa for Carl Crawford. We need speed up and down the lineup, not only the leadoff man. so-- let me say again KW is as responsible for this fiasco as Dave Dombrowski is for putting together the present Tiger team !!!!!!!

tampa
keep your vodka-- Tampa will always finish last with 20 outfielders-- they are the team that  needs pitching

by BIG KLU on Jun 24, 2007 5:52 PM CDT reply actions

Tampa doesn't really need pitching...
They can likely get some bullpen help on the cheap with some of their mid-level prospects (Howell, Hammel), but with a future rotation of:

Kazmir, Shields, Niemmen, Sonnanstine, Price

to go with some of the young arms they have control of for the foreseeable future they should be fine.

They are getting production from young cheap players whom they control the rights to for a while. They are also able to fill needs with cast-offs like Harris and Pena who are producing around top prospects. Any trades they make will not be for rentals.

by krushcuts on Jun 24, 2007 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions

and more on KW's general manager abilities
does anyone remember what KW said after the MC Carthy trade? While being crucified by the press, he said-- I have all the faith in the world in our scouts, apparently we know something about these players that you don't know. Well KW just fired the guy he had all the faith in the world in. What does that tell you about the KW organization?

by BIG KLU on Jun 24, 2007 6:07 PM CDT reply actions

It tells me KW needs to be fired
Kenny needs to stop with this "You don't understand our high level moves B.S."  Think of all of the top free agents that are out there after this season.  How many will the Sox be competing for?  I can see a steroid-free Jason Giambi in our future down the road.  It's KW's favorite target: players on the downside of their career, like Erstad.

by LVSoxFan on Jun 24, 2007 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions

A and B
A.) every bad team usually needs pitching, but that doesn't mean they will trade thier best player and one of the top 15 in baseball. The whole Crawford trade is bonehead for Tampa in any scenario.

Here's what Crawford makes in the future
2008:$5.25M,
2009:$8.25M club option ($2.5M buyout),
2010:$10M club option ($1.25M buyout)

so they'll take who for him? what young stud pitchers can we package, they don't want any current roster players because most organizations dont add older pitchers with big deals when their 15-20 games out at the deadline....

B.) Kenny did say that, but you also have different scouts who watch minor leaguers and major leaguers, the guys from Texas (Danks trade) have been scouted by the major league team led by Dave Wilder, the guy who helped convince Dye (whom he originally signed while working for ATL as a rookie), they were also the crew who wanted Hunter Pence in the Garland trade, I agree he should have more influence on the draft, but  even the best teams only get 3-4 good players in the draft every year, and how many scouts do they hire for those players, it's almost a crap shoot, everyone passing on Pujols shows how hard it is to evaluate at that level

by tubesox on Jun 24, 2007 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions

C - Salty
1B - Kongerko
2B - Betimit (can he play 2B?)
SS - Escobar
3B - Crede
LF - Fields
CF - A. Jones
RF - Sweeney

Hmm, I just started putting names in there that I thought would look good. Looks a little right-handed heavy, and doesn't really have any Ozzie speed types. Maybe Ichiro instead of Adruw, who I threw in there because he's having such a terrible year; i.e. a KW type of acquisition.

As to how we could get those players back in a trade... I don't know.. Vazquez, Contreras, or Garland and maybe MacDougal to ATL for Salty and Escobar. Dye and Iguchi/Uribe/Cintron/Mackowiak to LA for Betimit and a lower level prospect.

I don't think AJ would have any value, but he's not even an offensive catcher anymore, and I really don't want him here anywhere beyond '08.

Resign Buehrle. Heck, they can even pick up Erstad's option if they want if they promise he starts 25 or fewer games (unless an injury crops up).

That leaves pitching staff of Buehrle, Danks, and the Floyd/Gio winner with 2 of Contreras/Vazquez/Garland.

The key to the next 6 months may be extracting some high end prospects for Contreras, who, despite pitching fairly well today, hasn't been the same pitcher since that May 4th game last year. Hopefully there were a bunch of scouts at the game today since Contreras threw strikes and looked "crafty"

ever since the June 10th Astros game. JW if anyone can give me an update on how Josh Fields has been progressing as i see his BA has gone up...

Well...
He's been better than Crede was while he was playing this year.

Not really sure that's encouraging, though.

One thing not being discussed
is that the Sox should fire Herm Schneider's big, fat ass ;)

yea i know
basically the same for callin out kenny for every trade not working to perfection
WHAT'S a Chuck Liddell?

by marco054 on Jun 24, 2007 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

probably because
he's regularly lauded by Will Carroll as one of the guys who really has his shit together.

Well, look at the bright side
These recent losses don't hurt nearly as bad as those losses last year - eg I remember blowing a Sunday game to the Cubs last year when we could have swept them, and I almost threw the TV set out of the window.

This year, it's like putting a frog in a pot of cold water and gradually increasing the heat.  I don't give a shit anymore.  Bring on TB, woohoo!

Question??
Has anyone checked what next years salary might be like next year without Buerhle, Dye, Pods, Cintron, possibly Crede, Erstad and with possible cheap young players in their spots. I was figuring we would be able to land a big free agent outfielder this year since they'll probably be gone

Hey Ichiro
Basically if the sox don't get a leadoff hitter in a trade that tell me they're going to break the bank to get him.

You don't like Ichiro huh?
You want to risk with Pods again next year to lead off? You want the Sox to save money for something great?

by ckimcircles on Jun 24, 2007 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions

It's still not likely
Crede will still be a Sox (try to get to play a productive half season and deal him deadline 2008). Roughly, I think the Sox still have a around $80M locked up next year without those guys. But the big FAs are not coming to the Sox. They either want a contender (Ichiro) or they will simply be too expensive. The Sox simply will not pay the price in years and $ for elite talent. That's not necessarily a criticism, as locking up a lot of payroll in one guy isn't usually a good move.

I would guess the Sox will go after guys like Vizquel, Castillo, Rowand, and Eckstein. They won't command huge deals and the Sox have been linked to all but maybe Eckstein before.

by hitlesswonder on Jun 24, 2007 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Eckstein?
That's exactly what this team needs!  There's just not enough grinding.  Not enough spark.  Imagine, Erstad, Pods, and Eck all on one team!

Yeah, that was like
afternoon news today...he's probably gone by tomorrow

A few days ago,
"the White Sox and senior director of amateur scouting Duane Shaffer have parted ways after 35 years."

Since we started chopping the old, dead wood, any chance we see the same with Hawk, Farmer, et al.

Farmer really got panned in a weekend review. Hawk wasn't much better.

Here's a lineup..
realistic and that should be good for 71 wins:

CF Darin Erstad
SS Alex Cintron
DH  Jim Thome
1B Paul Konerko
LF  Willy Pena
RF Joque Jones
C  AJ P
3B  Josh Fields
2B  Andy Gonzales

by DrBox on Jun 24, 2007 10:33 PM CDT reply actions

71 wins sounds great....
but whats the point of keeping Thome and Konerko if we aren't expecting to even compete next year?

by ckimcircles on Jun 24, 2007 10:37 PM CDT up reply actions

None but..
it's hard to move them.
My post was in jest - I'm sure Williams will do a lot better than my lineup.

by DrBox on Jun 24, 2007 10:44 PM CDT reply actions

Here's my shot
C AJ
DH Thome
1B Konerko
2B Richar (with Gonzalez getting some ABs vs lefties)
3B Fields
SS Vizquel
LF Wily Mo
CF Ichiro!
RF Sweeney (Terrero with ABs vs lefties)

Garland
Vazquez
Danks
Floyd
(don't know)

That's a little over 71 million for the above squad -- I have Ichiro at $15 million and Vizquel at another $4 million and made some estimates on others.  Ideally, I'd go cheap up the middle -- Richar (after a successful half-season at Charlotte, of course) and ? -- and Buehrle comes back at 5/$75.  I think they can do it, and heck, this team could probably be pretty decent.

I also don't know what I did with Joe Crede -- let's just say he vanishes off the face of the earth.

No trade yet
I expect something done either today or tomorrow.
