so, ricks (C) stole 2 bases at the A+ game and then hit a double at the AAA game

by The Wizard on Aug 1, 2007 10:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Ricks
Yep. The A+ game was in the afternoon, and he was called up to be the new backup catcher (He was never much of a prospect, and is now officially an organizational player) in Charlotte. Though it also appears as if there is an injury to Ryan Sweeney, whose place Ricks took in the lineup.

Can Tomas Perez or Beourgois
play SS?

I'm just wondering...
if Bourgois could play 2B next year, and Richar play SS... or swap the two's positions.

tomas perez? no, he's 34 and has a 620 OPS!
bourgeois at 2B? I guess he can

btw, here's yesterday's gamelogthat shows sweeney's exit:

Charlotte Bottom 2nd
    * Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Adam Ricks replaces Ryan Sweeney.
Toledo Top 3rd
    * Defensive switch from second base to right field for Kenny Perez.
    * Defensive switch from shortstop to second base for Tomas Perez.
    * Defensive switch from third base to shortstop for Earl Snyder.
    * Adam Ricks remains in the game as the third baseman.

Odd.
Maybe Bourgois can be our SS next year? what do ya think? What other minor league options do we have that can play SS?

I don't think we have any
miranda was drafted this year and now he's at A
valido was a disaster and got demoted to A+

the closest thing I can think is bourgeois/agonzalez at 2B and richar at SS

cheat?

by The Wizard on Aug 2, 2007 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm...
Richar and Bourgois + a mix of Andy Gonzalez would be a serviceable lineup for next year. I mean... it's not great by any means, but it'd be cheap.
"God knows I gave my best in baseball at all times and no man on earth can truthfully judge me otherwise."

by Shoeless In SC on Aug 2, 2007 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

cheap it would be
btw, I omitted our current AA SS, victor mercedes, who is 28 and has a 700 OPS
I don't think he's an option either

two other names I see are robert hudsdon, and c.j. lang
more 700 OPS...

and a correction, valido was our AA SS, not our AAA SS
speaking of AAA, you don't want to talk about our current AAA SS...

final verdict: thing look very very bleak at SS in our minor systems

kenny do something!

even our top draft choice i see
isn't exactly tearing it up either. What, can he not hit a homerun... ever?

Hell no! Just because I want a leeeeetle power doesn't mean I want Uribe back. Not by any means.

Heck, look at Han Ram, Tulowitzki, Hardy... these guys are kinda small, (smaller than profundo) but they are killing the ball.

Bourgeois is reputedly an awful awful
infielder.  If you check his log, he's actually played a lot of DH, despite being the only near-prospect in the Charlotte infield for most of the year (Richar wasn't even there for that long).  I figured him as a possible platoon candidate at second base, as it does appear he can hit pretty well for a second baseman.

minor league news
Mark Gonzales:

winter ball

Wrist injuries will force top prospects Brian Anderson and Ryan Sweeney to play this winter to make up for lost time this season.

Anderson, the Sox's Opening Day center fielder last season, is headed to the Mexican Pacific League this winter after he was refitted with a new cast on his left wrist.

Anderson hasn't played for Triple-A Charlotte in a month and is likely out for the remainder of the International League season. He was batting .255 with eight home runs and 31 RBIs in 200 at-bats for the Knights. Sweeney was placed on the Knights' disabled list this week because of a lingering right wrist injury.

Organization officials are being cautious in treating Sweeney's ailment because of past wrist injuries. Sweeney could play in the Arizona Fall League for Phoenix if he doesn't receive a September promotion to the Sox.

Sweeney is batting .275 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs in 331 at-bats for Charlotte. Anderson was 2-for-17 in a part-time role with the Sox before he was optioned to Charlotte on April 29, and Sweeney batted .200 in 45 at-bats with the Sox in May.

promotions

Catcher Donny Lucy was promoted from Double-A Birmingham to Charlotte. Lucy was batting .269 with six homers in 87 games for the Barons. ... Cole Armstrong moved from Class-A Winston-Salem to Birmingham. Both moves came after the Orioles claimed Charlotte catcher Gustavo Molina on waivers. ... Kyle McCulloch, the Sox's top pick in the 2006 draft, was promoted from Winston-Salem to Birmingham. McCulloch was 7-7 with a 3.64 ERA for the Warthogs.

I wonder how that compares, water quality-wise, with Mexico. We watched a video in my nutrition class about Mexico's recent water problems. They've done a lot to fix them, but they're still behind in a lot of areas.

I really really wish they'd promote
Schnurstein and Carter.  I know Micah's been demoted once, but his numbers are just ridiculous and you'd think there'd be some translation going forward.  I say this despite the fact that I berated chisox (I think) for having similar premonitions.  Carter because I want him fast-tracked so he's available to replace Thome in '09.

is rookie ball
notoriously hitter-friendly?  or do the sox just happen to have a bunch of good hitting rookies and crappy pitchers?

by Ryno on Aug 7, 2007 11:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Both.
Great Falls leads the Pioneer league in most offensive categories, and the rookie leagues tend to be high-offense.

Combine fielders who are still honing their instincts and pitchers who have control problems, and you have a recipe for a lot of offense.

The best indicator, I think, is doubles and home
runs, though having a crap BABIP usually indicates being not good also.

I mean you can't ask much more of a pitching prospect than to lead the minors in K's. I mean what more is he going to do?

by bhoov on Aug 8, 2007 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Excellent question.
It could be that they don't want to shake up his confidence.  The guy's still only 21 - it's not like he's old for his level.

I'm wondering if he won't end up skipping AAA altogether, like Buehrle did.  We might see him get a cup of coffee in September, and if if he has a decent spring and the team can dump Contreras, he might be the #5 starter next year.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Aug 8, 2007 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he'll be up here for sure in September, it would be cool if he could make that jump.

i've said before
he doesn't need AAA. unfortunately, we also haven't made much room at charlotte for another starter so it's pretty moot.

i think the MB, javy, danks, gio, floyd rotation would be my pick, as well, though i would not mind swapping javy for garland.

by larry on Aug 8, 2007 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im still unnerved by Garlands knot
It seems to have shown up every other start, I also like having Javy throwing all those Ks. Id like to have two strikeout pitchers in the rotation for once.

what the hell is going on with nevin griffith?
on august 8 I saw this on the boxscore, on what was his first start:

griffith*: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 5 K, 1 BB, 3.86 ERA

today I see him having a 5.85 ERA after pitching 1 scoreless, so I look back on the august 8 boxscore and I see this:

griffith*: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 2 K, 0 BB, 6.75 ERA
johnson: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 3 K, 1 BB, 9.77 ERA

what the hell? I'm sure I've done and will do again mistakes but I don't make things up
if you add the current 2 pitching lines from that day, the result is what I wrote; I assume the milb.com weddude screwed up

by The Wizard on Aug 11, 2007 10:11 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

now it says 5.40
btw, why don't they send sergio miranda back to rookie ball?

by The Wizard on Aug 11, 2007 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bacause he's holding his own
Guys often struggle in their first exposure to full-season ball. Miranda's not hitting much, and obviously has some defensive issues (I'm not sure what to make of those. I need to get a scouting report on him) but he's controlling the strike zone and doesn't seem completely overmatched. 18 strikeouts in 150 at-bats is good, and he's not just putting the ball in play as quickly as possible as evidenced by his 23 walks.

Judging by his Kanny line, which is still a dangerous thing to do this early in his pro career, I'd say he's comparable to Getz. But he's 20 in A-ball.

We won't really start to know what we have with Miranda until about the All-star break next year.

haha, even their recap agrees with me
Chip Haunss/MLB.com:
Starter Nevin Griffith yielded an unearned run on four hits and one walk while fanning five over five frames.

Why should Miranda be sent down?
He needs to be learning how to hit A ball pitching, if the coaches arent working with him than he needs to work with other players to see what works.

Rookie ball
Dunno about his last two CS, but prior to that 5 of Gerst's 7 CS had been on hit-and-runs where the batter didn't swing.

Sweeney is sucking it hard
Hes gone 3-22 since his return. The only positive thing is he drew a few walks his last two games so maybe he'll figure something out before September comes around.

phil rogers on aaron poreda
phil rogers:
The White Sox's scouting staff was watching from the sidelines, with a growing sense of confidence about their first-rounder. University of San Francisco left-hander Aaron Poreda, taken with the 25th pick, received his $1.2 million bonus shortly after the trade and has been turning in very good work in the Pioneer League.

While Vanderbilt's David Price was playing golf and signing a deal with Tampa Bay on Wednesday, Poreda was making his fifth start, the ninth appearance overall, for Great Falls. This is a hitter's league, known for light air and small ballparks, yet he's 1-0 with a 1.44 ERA in 31 1-3 innings. He's held opponents to a .196 average and given up only one home run. His most impressive number is a strikeout-walk ratio of 5-1, with a ratio of 1.7 walks per nine innings.

A big, powerful lefty with mid-90s stuff, Poreda has excellent control (24 walks in 131 innings between college and the pros this season). The White Sox have no reason to rush him but that kind of command suggests that he could shortcut the normal developmental curve, possibly challenging for a job in Chicago (perhaps as a Scott Radinsky/Matt Thornton-type out of the bullpen) by 2009.

and Fautino de los Santos
Another White Sox kid to watch: Fautino de los Santos. He was just bumped from low-A to high-A, and in his debut with Winston-Salem beat Ross Detwiler, a college left-hander whom Washington selected with the sixth pick overall in this year's draft. De los Santos left with a 4-1 lead, allowing one run in five innings. His numbers between the two levels are among the best anywhere in the minors this year -- 10-4, 2.37, 127 strikeouts, 37 walks and a .151 opponents batting average. He's 21. That's a year older than fellow Dominican Juan Moreno, who is joining Poreda to do good work at Great Falls (4-4, 2.85 and a 6-1 strikeout-walk ratio in 11 starts).

Yawn
When Gio Gonzalez was first drafted and sent to rookie ball as an 18year old.... he struck out 36 and allowed just 17 hits in his 24 innings (6 starts)

Poreda's striking out 1 per inning and allowing a hit per inning. Good numbers, but nothing spectacular from a first rounder, especially as a college player in rookie ball.

john shelby
how do you see him guys? (stats)
he keeps hitting homers and throwing OF assists from CF lately
he's 22, do  we have a CF prospect?
I assume he will be in winston-salem to start the season in 2008

by The Wizard on Aug 22, 2007 10:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

So 23 and in A+ next year?
He doesnt look like a high ceiling guy to me. When hes hitting well over .300 and continues showing power and D in AA next year maybe I will take in interest. But for me the only true CF in the organization is BA sadly. I hate Ozzie so much.

out of Kentucky and played rookie ball at great falls

Still...
it's too early to tell.  He's doing well but not exactly dominating the Sally league.

Like OG, I'll start being impressed if he makes short work of Hi-A and plays well in the Southern League next year.

Thats why Im not too thrilled
hes not dominating, hell he cant even crack .300.

He's dominating this month
August .366  9 HR  .381/.753/1.134. .917 OPS since the all-star break.

Maybe he is for real. But if he is he'll need to get to AA next year. He'll be 22 most of next baseball year. But if he's gonna be a starting mlb player he probably should be at least holding his own in AA at 23.

By contrast Ryan Sweeney is still only 22. Although he's been dissapointing he's still too young to give up on.

A good hitting coach would help Sweeney a lot
otherwise he will be another BA. And then we will constantly hear Ozzie talking about winter ball until Sweeney is in his dog house too.

his windup is like santana's
great falls tribune:
The White Sox added an unearned run in the third as Christian Marrero cracked a one-out double and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. The four-run cushion proved to be plenty for Moreno, the 6-4, 185-pounder from the Dominican Republic who was 6-4 with a league-best 2.39 earned-run average this year.

"He was solid. He's been solid for us all year," said Great Falls catcher John Curtis, who played on several Cal State Fullerton teams that advanced to the College World Series. "He kept the ball down and got a lot of groundballs. That's the name of the game, pitching-wise."

Moreno, whose windup resembles a righthanded version of Minnesota superstar Johan Santana, was touched for a run in the third. But he was rarely in trouble thereafter and yielded just five hits in a six-inning, 93-pitch stint.

What makes Moreno so tough?

"He has different arm angles and he mixes speeds all the time," said Curtis. "He'll throw any pitch on any count and that's what makes him good."

Great Falls pitching coach Curt Hasler has seen it before from Moreno, named the Pioneer League's Pitcher of the Year.

"Juan did tonight what he's done all year," Hasler said. "He threw strikes, he changed arm angles and he's not afraid. He's got heart and he goes after hitters."

bourgeois
toni ginetti:
Jason Bourgeois is a player the Sox see in their future. The second baseman has reached base safely in 13 consecutive games for Class AAA Charlotte, hitting .392 (20-for-51) with four doubles, a home run and five steals in that span. He is batting .313 overall with six homers, 31 RBI and 22 steals in 27 attempts.

bull pain, have you seen him?
meanwhile, I found a thread on soxtalk via google

"Fast as hell. Above average defensively at second and third. Very good in the outfield. Short and a little stocky. A slight temper, but not too much. All around good ballplayer."

sounds too good...

Wheels he has
In the game I saw him play in Pawtucket, he scored from second pretty much by himself, stealing third, then scoring by tagging on a foul ball caught by the third baseman in Pawtucket's expansive foul territory.

He looked competent in the OF, but looked bad at second in the one game I saw in Syracuse.  That stadium has really crappy turf, though.

Makes pretty good contact, doesn't swing and miss much.

by Sox Machine on Aug 27, 2007 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only thing I've read about the guy
defensively is that he's not good at second.  But, really, if he can be slotted in at utility or in the outfield, he could be valuable, especially if he can surprise some people.

Carter didn't play
because he had been hit in the eye by a pitch in the 9th inning the previous game (two night before)...

Zazuzeta decided to take it out with by throwing at who I presume was the opposing teams best player... Twice. He hit him in the back in his first at-bat, which cleared the benches, but nobody was thrown out. Then he hit him again in the leg in his second at-bat, which got a little crazy.

The benches had to spend the rest of the game in the clubhouse, AFTER there was a 45-minute cooling off period.
