Ozzie on Aaron Poreda:

"If it was my decision, believe me, I would bring him up here right away,'' Guillen said. Poreda is a 21-year-old starting pitcher selected by the Sox on the first round of last year's amateur draft. Facing a team of the Colorado Rockies' top prospects Monday, the 6-foot-6, 240-pound lefty wowed Guillen while pitching 2 scoreless innings. Poreda didn't allow a hit while striking out three and walking one. "That's a real No. 1 (starter),'' Guillen said. "You will see him here pretty soon. Hopefully he stays healthy.'' Poreda, a University of San Francisco product, pitched for Advanced Rookie Great Falls last year after signing with the White Sox. He was 4-0 with a 1.17 ERA in 12 games (8 starts) and has quickly emerged as the Sox' No. 1 prospect. "This kid's got a good arm and it's exciting to see him pitch,'' Guillen said. "He might pitch in a (Cactus League) game if we need it to get his feet wet a little bit, see how he feels.''

Anyone have the link

I saw one of those at the Louisville Slugger museum in Louisville, those things are awesome!  You can't bat at the museum, but you stand behind the catcher as close as an ump and select which pitcher you want to see.  Fucking Roger Clemens is like a locomotive coming at you, 60'6" is WAAAAY too close.

More good news for Kenny and the gang...
Rick Porcello was perfect for two innings, striking out one, in relief Tuesday as a Tigers split-squad beat the Indians 4-2.
Porcello is proving to be awfully polished for a 19-year-old. He has gone six up, six down in two of his three outings. In the other, he allowed one run and walked two in 1 2/3 innings against the Pirates.

Isn't the
'he can only hit in spring' a tad unfair? Yeah, he tanked last season after having a great spring. But he had, what, 27 ABs? I don't remember how he did in the spring of 2006; he struggled, as we all know, in his first MLB season though. Would it be better for BA not to hit in spring?

I just am having trouble understanding what is expected of BA. He's doing what he should be doing, and not just off of low A-ball pitchers.

Hardee-har har Larry
What prior history? One bad season, and 27 ABs the next. What's to say that, given the opportunity, BA wouldn't have followed up last year's spring with improved 2007, had he been given regular ABs? I don't see compelling enough evidence based on one bad season, a good spring, an incomplete, and another good spring (thus far) to warrant such a blanket assesment.

Someone with better credentials as a hitting instructor could certainly convince me otherwise, but I'm going on what I see and comparing it to how I think a swing can look to be successful.

yeah
whether BA can play in the majors is a topic we've all discussed many times. like colin, i haven't seen anything this spring that suggests anything's changed. offspeed, low, and away and BA will swing. and miss. i'm not sure what you're staking his ability to hit on. faith and hope is fine, of course.

by larry on Mar 11, 2008 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No hope and faith at all
It's simple fact that, to get to where BA is, he has had to learn and adjust for years; for nearly his entire career, he's had to adjust to pitchers. He wouldn't be here--or near to the MLB--if he couldn't.

We all know BA's problem. BA knows his problem. But mix in the facts that the Sox have a piss-poor hitting coach/staff and his personal turmoil from the past year, and injury, and you can see why he hasn't mastered this adjustment.

Maybe he won't--but I'm not going to say that he can't.

by HulkSmash on Mar 11, 2008 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

this is a bit more than an "adjustment"
all those factors are nice. but plenty of players simply don't get it, even with the best of circumstances. organized baseball is littered with them.

by Brush Back on Mar 11, 2008 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe, maybe not
fine, there's a chance that anderson might be able to hit major league pitching consistently someday.

but that chance isn't a result of the fact that he's had to adjust to pitching his entire life. there is a reason that lots of kids who play little league don't make their high school teams, why some great high school players go undrafted and unsigned and can't hack it in college ball, why most college players can't hack it in the minors, and why a great number of minor leaguers don't become contributors at the major league level. everybody has a ceiling, and anderson's looks more and more like the imaginary yet legendary AAAA level.

"They say that blood is thicker than water. What we have is thicker than blood."

by Toonderstrook on Mar 11, 2008 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's a fine point
but it's naive to say that learning to adjust your game has nothing to do with maturing as a player. I've seen it with my own eyes, the results of players who can't adjust, who mash in high school ball but can't clear the IF in college. Yes, it has to do with ceilings, but it also has to do with adapting your game to the skill level around you. Some players can do it, some can't. That's the way it goes.

by HulkSmash on Mar 12, 2008 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't I hate you
over this subject??? The best we can do is let Brian do what he is doing... package him, uribe, and Broadway for Brian Roberts. We could also add to that package and I wouldn't be all that upset. Then Quinten could get a legitimate shot at the outfield either beating out or sharing time with Owens. I would love to see Owens start and provide a spark... but if he is going to be injured all year we might as well make a run at Roberts right?

My point about BA
is he is doing exceptionally well this spring. If KW can unload Crede for some decent value in return we could possible center a deal around BA and Uribe. JU was a starting ss for a world series winner. Brian can be advertised as getting over the hump. What ever we get in return for Crede could make that deal possible.

I really like what Ive seen
His swing looks quick and fluid and his batting eye looks very nice.  He tends to hit first pitch fastball, but I saw him work the count and still hit the ball hard, which it seems like he always does.  And he's rail thin.  I hope he like cheeseburgers and weight rooms.  I'm as enthusiastic as you can be with all the caveats that come with what we already know.  Oh.  Actually, there was a ball in the hole at short I really thought he should have gotten to.

I'm a LIFELONG Cubs fan who actually follows the game of BASEBALL...Not some drunken fool who doesn't know what inning it is during a game @ Wrigley. Wrigley is nothing more than an old, dirty gigantic beer garden -- in which many of the supposed "Cub Fans" are ignorant as to what's going on the field as long as the beer is flowing and the bars are open after game. The Cell doesn't champion this type of environment...It's more baseball fan-friendly & family-oriented. If the Cubs play part of the season @ The Cell, this will weed out those supposed "Cub Fans" from the true BASEBALL Cub fans. GO CUBS GO!

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

DON'T DO IT JERRY!
I would hate for Cub fans to come to our park and trash it during the day while we have to play at night. You know they will since most Cub fans are drunken buffoons who will be throwing up over all the seats. The vomit will start flowing even more once they see that banner hanging in left center.

I don't think Ramirez will ever hit many homers...
Everyone keeps saying that he his build is just like Soriano's but he looks much skinnier to me.  Soriano actually has muscle.  I do think Ramirez will hit a lot of doubles and triples with his speed though.  And that will be just fine if he is starting at SS in 2009.

Here it is....(Keith Law)
Alexei Ramirez has certainly received more than his share of attention this spring, and he's in the mix for the starting second-base job on the South Side, although Ozzie Guillen's comments that his defense is "pretty rough at second base" would seem to point to a stint in AAA.

Ramirez reminds me in a lot of ways of Alfonso Soriano, although he doesn't have Soriano's explosiveness at the plate. Ramirez is slight of build, but wiry strong, and could probably add some muscle in an MLB-caliber conditioning program. He has very quick wrists and gets the bat to the ball quickly, with very good plate coverage as well. His swing has Soriano's exaggerated finish, and when he connects he has plus raw power to his pull side (left field) and can at least put it to the wall to the opposite field.

The similarities to Soriano continue through to Soriano's biggest negative as a hitter, his lack of plate discipline, and if anything, Ramirez' discipline might be worse. Because he can get the bat to the ball so easily, he tries to hit everything, and very few players in baseball can succeed with that approach. In today's game, Ramirez swung at a ball that hit him, and then swung at another one that would have hit his jaw if he hadn't fouled it off. He took just two pitches in his first three trips to the plate, one of which was a called third strike. He seems to be a reactive hitter, one who reacts to the pitch as it travels rather than trying to recognize the pitch as it leaves the pitcher's hand. So if he gets a pitch in his zone, he can destroy it. He seems to anticipate fastballs in fastball counts, but he can be beaten by a pitcher who can locate his stuff just out of Ramirez's reach.

On defense, he is indeed a bit rough. He has plenty of athleticism to handle second base, but his actions are all wrong for the position, similar to the way B.J. Upton couldn't play second despite being an excellent athlete. Ramirez hampers himself further with a tendency to try to make the flashy play, going for the glove flip during today's game when he would have been better served trying to get the ball out of his glove and then throwing it.

If the White Sox give Ramirez a starting job, he's likely to hit for a decent average with 20-homer power, but his OBP would be poor because he's not going to draw many walks. A few weeks or months in AAA to get him comfortable facing American pitching wouldn't hurt him or the big club.

Other observations from Surprise&

  • Josh Hamilton murders fastballs. He took the first pitch he saw, a 92-mph fastball from Gavin Floyd, out to center field, and his other two hits were also smoked. Hamilton isn't just a fastball hitter, but at the least, pitchers need to work him away with offspeed stuff, because throwing him a fastball in or near the zone is asking for trouble.
  • Speaking of Floyd, he's gone backward since his days as a top prospect. The No. 4 pick in the 2001 draft -- one ahead of Mark Teixeira -- once had one of the best curveballs in the game, but it's dropped all the way to solid average, and he can't get consistent bite on it, throwing just one plus curve (to strike out Michael Young) during his outing. He doesn't command his four-seamer at 91-93 mph, and his straight changeup isn't going to fool hitters.
  • Kazuo Fukumori worked a short inning, showing an 89-91 mph fastball with some downhill plane and a "shuuto" at 85-86 mph with a solid late break that's more vertical than horizontal, making it almost like a splitter with a little cut. He has some effort to his delivery, and I don't see plus fastball command. But if he stays on top of the ball and can mix in the shuuto, he should be effective.
  • I've said before that I believe Josh Fields will develop into an above-average offensive third baseman, but he has yet to show progress recognizing breaking balls. That's going to keep his contact rate and his walk rate down, and he doesn't have a great glove on which to fall back.

and learn to be more selective... else he is just going to get an assload of strikeouts because pitchers will refuse to throw him fastballs.

Glad to hear that he's got some plus pitches with control and able to get these high minors-type guys out. I would like to see him in a Cactus League game once, just to see how he plays against MLB-caliber players.

This is encouraging, because it's been a while since a first-round pick by the Sox actually panned out... But maybe this is a good sign for the Sox this summer when they draft again inside the top 10.

And with the 8th selection in the 2008 draft
The Chicago WhiteSox select, Jordan Danks from the University of Texas.  Wow another head scratcher from the Williams crew.  With Alvarez falling to this and with the minor leagues ranked 30th you would figure that Williams would move towards a talent like that.   Lets see what Kenny has to say about it.

Wow, I can't believe he was still on the board.   "KW"
Uh Kenny, Danks would of been there in the 2nd round. "Reporter"
Thats shows what you know, thats Jordan Danks a bonified baseball player.  "KW"
But Alvarez. "Reporter"
Alvarez or other players are not a fit for the Chicago Whitesox.   Alvarez is not Chicago tough.  Jordan is a grinder.  He is what we need.  We select Baseball players with this draft not talented guys.

Bourgeios, CF; Cabrera, SS; Swisher, 1B; PK, DH; Dye, RF; AJ, C; Crede, 3B; Anderson, LF; Uribe, 2B.  Vazquez returns to start.

just to clarify
this condition - or what it sounds like this condition is - isn't something new to him. it's probably genetic. and it certainly would be a great explanation for his injury history.

this is a life threatening condition, based upon what he said. they caught it early, earlier than it's usually found in people, so hopefully that will help lengthen and increase his quality of life going forward. i realize you didn't mean anything with your question but steroids shouldn't be thrown around regarding this. it's a very sad thing for baldelli.

D-Rays (or is it just Rays now...) have to decide if they pick up his $6 million 09 Option or GULP offer him a $4 million buyout.

I didn't mean to say he was on steroids when I stated that above, it was just a question.  When it comes to PED in MLB now, I don't trust anyone...us fans were burned bigtime in the late 90's and early 00's...so I can't trust them anymore.

I don't think that the Cubs value Murton much...
Even if Hendry does, Lou damn sure doesn't.  Lou definitely sees Murton as a fourth or fifth outfielder.  Sam Fuld is a scrub and he won't make their roster.  Neither will Eric Patterson.  A Brian Roberts trade would certainly change things because then Mark DeRosa would be a utility-man / outfielder.  I guess the Cubs would want to platoon Anderson with Twisted Testicle Pie in CF but who knows...

Coco Crisp to the Mets for... Angel Pagan?!?
According to WFAN's Ed Coleman, the Red Sox and Mets are working on a deal that would send Coco Crisp to New York for Angel Pagan.
The Red Sox would be practically giving Crisp away, but they may feel they have no choice if he's going to cause problems as a fourth outfielder. It's not like there's a real market for him when Corey Patterson can't do better than a minor league deal and Kenny Lofton remains a free agent. Pagan at least can serve as a backup center fielder and would be content in the role, unlike Crisp.

So the Cubs are supposedly interested in Coco Crisp now and they already traded Angel Pagan to the Mets who can actually net Crisp?  Crazy.

be a backup CF'er in NY too...I don't understand why he would be happy with that move.

His OPS+ has been worse than Corey Patterson the last two years and he is due $4.75m this year and $5.75m next year - for a bench player.

I think Omar is making a big mistake with this one.

likely would start until alou is back. alou obviously will need days off and defensive replacement. crisp is a decent platoon partner for church, as well. he still wouldn't be a starter full-time, but he'd play more in the NL and especially for the mets. seems like decent insurance for the mets. they are in a win now mode and money isn't exactly scarce.

first cuts, wiz happy, PK's bad toe
The White Sox cut 12 players from their spring training roster before Wednesday's game against the Rockies.

Pitchers Lance Broadway, Dewon Day, Charlie Haeger and Oneli Perez were optioned to Triple-A Charlotte, and pitcher Lucas Harrell was optioned to Class-A Birmingham.

Infielders Chris Getz, Royce Huffman, Mike Rouse and Jeff Liefer, catcher Ryan Smith and outfielder Miguel Negron were reassigned to minor league camp.

Left-handed reliever Carlos Vasquez, who was acquired with reliever David Aardsma from the Cubs for left-hander Neal Cotts, was waived.

The moves leave the Sox with 39 players in camp.

In addition, Paul Konerko was scratched from Wednesday's starting lineup because of a sore right toe. Josh Fields will be the designated hitter.
