Another stellar performance tonight on the road in 7 Innings, 1 Hit (No Hitter into the 6th), 1 ER, 1 BB, & 7 K's.

His ERA is down to 2.72 after a rough 1st outing (that hasn't been made up yet due to ANOTHER suspended game), he's given up only 1 HR in 36.1 innings, batters are hitting only .234 against him, while walking only 5 and striking out 25. He's absolutely on a TEAR.

Relax (Coming from me, a hated Cubs fan)

I understand all these problems you guys think and know the Sox have right now. MY advice be patient. I cannot see this team finishing even close to as bad the 07 team finished. In fact this team reminds me a lot of that “good” Cubs team last year that made the playoffs. The 07 Cubs, not a great team by any means, started out with a horrible offense and finished April with a very similar record as the 08 Sox, they turned things around and took the division. The AL Central is not what it was (I do not know why, but it seems weaker than last year) Im not saying its NL Central weak (Although its solid this year), but It looks like everyone is going to beat up on everyone else in the AL Central. So,relax, Thome will come around, Quentin is a stud, and Dye and Paulie will start hitting more. Also, I can see the Sox trying to get Brian Roberts from the Orioles. I guess the point to my post is, things can only get better and it is really early in the season. The Sox are still my pick to win the division. F#ck the Tigers.

As Ozzie rants the house is crumbling. Oh had he only ranted louder in the off season while KW was making these less than stellar moves. The Sox need two things to happen to stay in this race.

1) Make major moves.

1a) Cut Jim Thome. The time has come. He has no trade value and why in the world would you give him another contract? Put JD in the DH spot and start shopping for an outfielder. The biggest problem with shopping now is that they will be forced to cough up a pitcher. They have nothing else to offer. Maybe give Fields a chance in Thome's slot. The only thing to look forward to with big Jim are the banners egging him on to 600 homers over the next few years.

1b) Everyone was complaining about Podsednik and Erstad?? Nick Swisher hasn't exactly set this team on fire! When I think about the outfield the Sox could have had I shutter. The White Sox realistically could have had a Cabrera, Fukedome, Quentin outfield! The Yanks would have easily surrendered Melky for Garland and KW should have paid Fukedome. That would have been an unbelievable set of moves.

1c) Uribe, Cabrera, & Ozuna. About the only thing remaining to be figured out here is which one is Moe, Larry, and Curly. What a shame/waste to have only gotten OCab for Garland. We lost out on greater possibilities there. What do you do with these guys? If this organization stays with these three amigos they will sink with them.

2) Pray that the AL Central morphs into the NL Central. If this division bogs down near .500 they may stay alive for an extended period of time.

I leave you with the lineup that should have been,

C: AJ; 1B Konerko; 2B Iguchi; SS Eckstein; 3B Crede

LF Quentin; CF Cabrera; RF Fukedome; DH Dye

I was skeptical of the naysayers last year when they said the Sox lineup was getting old and starting to underachieve. Then, 2007 ended and I thought it couldn't get any worse. After tonight's 2-0 loss to Toronto, I'm starting to think the Sox just might be a lineup that's getting old and underachieve too consistently. Sure, we knew Crede and AJ were going to come back down to earth, but no one has picked it up in their place since the opening game of the Yankees series where they stranded 13 runners. I can handle a couple games here and there where pitchers have our number, but when we start calling these games similar to Greg Smith, Sonnanstine, Burres, and Marcum, where do the Sox draw the line? The first month saw a game get taken from us in Cleveland, a blown save with 1 strike to go get away from us, and a dumb squeeze play take 3 wins away from us. The Sox could've easily been 17-10 in the month of April. But it seems the team is regressing more and more and not backing what has been a very solid rotation and decent bullpen up to date. If this offense doesn't "bounce back" like it was supposed to all last year, a fire sale could be imminent even before July 31st gets here. This is not White Sox hitting we're seeing, and if it continues, the season may be gone by the end of the 10 game west coast road trip...

How worried should we be about Bobby Jenks' in 2008? Although much has been discussed about his decrease in velocity, I'm more alarmed by the following numbers:

2005: K/IP = 1.27, BB/IP = 0.38

2006: K/IP = 1.15, BB/IP = 0.44

2007: K/IP = 0.86, BB/IP = 0.20

2008: K/IP = 0.51, BB/IP = 0.43

While his walks are on par with his carrer numbers (2007 seems like an outlier), the strikeout rate is plunging dramatically.

With 2 blown saves already this season, at what point might Ozzie actually have to consider a closer-by-commitee as in 2005??

I am no longer a proponent of videotape. I just viewed a DVD of one of my fantasy camp games in January, andI have to say, even after a Sox "W" today, I am mortified and depressed. I thought I was hot shit, especially in the game I hit my lone 3-bagger, and especially thought I was a dandy at 3rd to the point that JC himself envied my abilities.

Ah the cold slap of reality against the face. I looked like I was carrying a piano on my back at I slid into 3rd with a Paulie/Thomer/JD/AJ (etc., etc.)-style 3B. (The one cool thing was seeing Fregosi dust me off, laughing.) And my fielding, though adeaquate, exhibited none of the smoothness and effortlessness I imagined I projected. And my hitting stance looked tentative and jangly, my hips swaying to and fro, not at all locked in. After my Oz-like pantsing of my imagined talent I almost called and cancelled my reservation for next year's camp.

Since we talked last year (or early this year, I forget) about our own baseball playing experience and alleged acumen, my question is: Have any of you seen yourself on tape (not in a pornographic sense)? Was it a humbling experience? How did you adjust?

In Defense of Tropicana Field

I always like to check out the SBN site of the opposing team as one of the proprietors of DRaysBay, so I've been lurking around South Side Sox for the last weekend or so. I was disappointed to check it out today and see that a member of the SSS community had some rather unflattering things to say about Tropicana Field. Since this opinion is neither unique nor entirely incorrect, I thought it would be fair for me to at least offer my two cents on the Trop.

First of all, to make things clear, I'm not arguing that Tropicana Field is a good ballpark. It is probably among the bottom five in Major League Baseball, and if not that, certainly the bottom ten. It simply is a dated facility that hasn't stood the test of time, but I think that a ballpark of the Trop's caliber ranks so lowly among MLB facilities is a testament to how much better ballparks have gotten over the last 18 years. A user in the earlier SSS diary noted how he had visited Tropicana Field ten years ago for one of the first ever series at the ballpark, and I've got to say that the Tropicana Field he observed was a dump. But I invite him to come back down to the Sunshine City in the Sunshine State to give our stadium another try. The investments that new owner Stu Sternberg have put into the stadium over the last two years have been immense, and it has really made all the difference. The ballpark is no longer drab, but vibrant with a paint scheme that reflects the team's new identity. New scoreboards have been put in, amentities have been increased dramatically, the outside has been landscaped, and you can still sit in comfort and watch Major League Baseball at 72 degree temperatures, for every game.

I've been to Comiskey Park in Chicago, and I've been to probably half of the stadiums currently in service around the Majors, and the Trop does rank relatively low. Comiskey itself wasn't a great ballpark before the renovations over the last five years, but those changes have made all the difference. I went to a game there in '06 and found the stadium to be excellent. It definitely compares well with Tropicana Field, and since Chicago actually has a mass transit system worthy of civilized folk, it was easy to get to. I only wish that Tampa Bay had any system of which to speak. But the fact of the matter is that Comiskey is only one year older than Tropicana Field, and prior to the renovations, it was an outdoor Tropicana Field. The era in which the two stadiums were built, just before Camden Yards, hinders the flexibility both teams have in bringing their stadiums up to the standards of the new "retro" ballparks. With Tropicana Field, it is all but impossible to work within the constraints of a dome to bring the stadium up to 21st century standards. Hence the new ballpark proposals.

So while Tropicana Field isn't a great ballpark, it takes far too severe a beating from opposing fans. It is entirely serviceable as a major league stadium, and going to probably three dozen games a year there, I've grown to appreciate it. It may not be perfect, but it was the stadium that fulfilled our area's Major League dreams. It did its job in bringing a team to Tampa Bay (eventually), and for that reason it is a place that means a lot to me. It might not be the crown jewel of the league, but it is too often trashed excessively.

GRIT: General Requirements of Intangible Talent

First, some definitions to help us focus in on what exactly this 'grit' stuff is.

Gritty
1. Containing, covered with, or resembling grit.
2. Showing resolution and fortitude; plucky: Biggio’s gritty 12-pitch at-bat ultimately resulted in a routine 6-3 groundout.

In keeping with those definitions I’m proposing a new composite statistic: General Requirements of Intangible Talent (GRIT). GRIT incorporates four basic components: dirt, determination, talent, and opportunity.

HYPOTHESIS
I hold that gritty players are those who sincerely want to win or succeed at baseball (determination), but due to a lack of natural skill (talent), are forced to do so through the least efficient means possible, resulting in an excessive amount of dirt on their uniform.

Sample:

CS/SB stuff (SBINEFF): This is a statistic I call Stolen Base Inefficiency (SBINEFF). This looks for players who like to attempt lots of steals but are largely unsuccessful. Stealing bases produces minimal gains (one base) but comes with greater potential costs by raising the likelihood of being thrown out. Base-stealers (successful or not) also have dirty uniforms from sliding.

DID YOU KNOW: Harold Reynolds holds the single-season record for SBINEFF with a stunning 13.385? Harold’s 1988 season saw him tally 35 steals while being caught 29 times. He broke the record set by Will Clark (13.304) during the previous season when Mr. Eyeblack went 5 for 22 on steal attempts. WOW!

Much more fun here:
http://www.flotsam-media.com/2007/12/flotsam-data-special-tangiblizing.html

[Note by The Cheat, 04/20/08 11:56 PM CDT]: I've been sitting here with the editor open for about an hour, paying more attention to the Food Network than I'd like to admit, unable to come up with anything to write, which is becoming far too regular when covering a team playing so well. So here's WU's first-hand account of the game in my place.

* * * * *

I just returned from a place worse than Hell itself - the alleged baseball stadium in St. Petersburg, Russia (er, Florida) and had to relate the experience. I also thought from my up-close-and-personal vantage point I'd give a few impressions on our guys at play.

First, I had paid the egregious price of $40/ticket to sit 11 rows behind the Rays dugout. Once my buddy George and I settled into our seats we began to realize we were in Pedophile Heaven. For the 1 1/2 hours before game time we were subjected to everything Disney that is musical - Hannah Montana, Raven, the Jonas Brothers, you name it. We were also sereneded by a warbling, off-key 10 year old girl who sang both the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America (that one at the 7th inning stretch). While she belted out the national anthem a group of 8 year old boys had taken the field and "maned" each position. Bottom line - Tampa has gone from playing to the Depends crowd to playing to the "tweens".

For those who mentioned the cavernous, echoing stadium ambience, Kevin Costner (via auditape) touted the referendum that will be voted upon in Novmeber for a new stadium on the site that Al Lang Stadium currently occupies. So we might not have the Trop to kick around by a couple of years from now (the new stadium is only seating 34K, so it appears that no one is expecting big attendance any time soon).

George happened to mention that his daughter is in the same sorority at Florida State as the Sox' podiatrist's daughter. Lo and behold, via the magic of cell phones, the said podiatrist tells us he's at the game, is leaving soon, and sure, we can take his seats behindthe Sox dugout.

We slide over to the Sox side and the guy brings us down to Row A, mid-dugout. The Doc's buddy accompanying him is the Sox dentist (tells us his best buddy is Bart Johnson). Both guys have the actual WS ring adorning their ring finger on their right hand - I hadn't seen one up close, and it's pretty impressive. Within the half inning the podiatrist drives off to his home in Jacksonville, and an inning laterthe dentist takes off. So we have 3 seats to ourselves to see the Sox up close and personal.

(These are how good the seats were - my hand to God, a woman comes up to George, who is 60 and Greek. She's in her 50's, probably, and says to George "I just wanted to say, Mr. Einhorn, that you've done a great job with the team this year. We've followed you down from Ft. Myers, and wish you the best this year." George, unflappably, says "Well, thank you", shakes her hand, and turns toward the game. So we're in the owner's seats.")

For my rundown on our boys:

1. Thank God Swish can draw walks, because he's not "on" the ball at the plate. And his speed fits right in with the middle of the order guys - didn't score on the first single by Thomer (granted, it was roped) and should've been thrown out on the 2nd single by Thomer (catcher didn't come up with the throw). And his hair is grayer than mine, and I've got 23 years on him.

2. O-Cab is steady - the exact same play he made in the 8th was muffed at the top of the 9th by Tampa's SS. Not bad AB's either - he roped his last out to LF.

3. Thomer sucks. Cut him. No, really, he was all OVER it today, and his K was questionable (looked like he held up his swing).

4. Except for his 3b (?!) JD looked overmatched all day.

5. AJ is on fire, JC is not.

6. Q looks OK - steady.

7. BA needs to go back to AA. He looked terrible, terrible, terrible. Ramirez' batting practice hacks looked better than BA's. BA should be the defensive/baserunning replacement only.

8. Uribe is FAT, so maybe that's why he's more patient at the plate. We've analyzed him to death, but he looks here to stay.

9. Danks was DEALING. Froze many guys at the plate, even though he was between 73-89 on the gun. Guys were very off-stride. Also, I was able to look directly into his face every inning he came off the mound as he entered the dugout- he looks confident and intense.

10. Boone sure shook off the "L" from Thursday - looked in command. I cringed when he went out for the 2nd inning of his turn but he did fine.

No real comments on defense (Uribe had a tough play to his right and slipped on the ground-up used tires they call "turf" there) but Danks and Logan were so good there didn't seem to be any tough chances. Fox held Swish when he should've, and sent him when he should've, so maybe our 3B coach is settling in.

All told, a great day to be at a game. Just not in Tampa's crypt, though being mistaken for an owner made our day.

Peter Schilling will be at Barbara's Bookstore (Halsted and Roosevelt) on April 25 at 7:30 to discuss his debet novel The End of Baseball. I don't know much about this guy, except that he is NOT the German synth-pop from the 80s. I just thought I would give you guys a heads up on this baseball related event in and around the South Side of Chicago. Also, I hear there will be complimentary beer and Cracker Jacks. Here are a couple blurbs about the book:

Publishers Weekly (Monday , February 25, 2008):
With this debut, sportswriter Schilling has written one of the best baseball novels since Howard Frank Mosher's "Waiting for Teddy Williams". Using actual events, Schilling has fictionalized a fantasy scenario in baseball history and the integration of black players into the major leagues in 1944. Bill Veeck Jr., a Marine veteran from a prestigious baseball family, buys the Philadelphia Athletics in 1943, becoming the youngest man to ever own a major league club. Veeck is a genius at publicity and promotion who wants to win the World Seriesbut using black players. He signs the best of the Negro League to the Athletics, against all conventional feeling and the opposition of Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis, the vicious commissioner of baseball. The Athletics romp through the 1944 season behind the on-and-off diamond antics of real-life stars like Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige and Roy Campanella, with Veeck struggling to raise money, avoid race riots and flummox Judge Landis. This exciting, fast-paced story is a fine commentary on baseball lore, race relations, and American sentiment during World War II, and it will have the reader hanging on every pitch, wondering how Veeck and his players will overcome racial discrimination to prove they can play in the major leagues. "(May)" Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

Brief Description:
Hungry for a pennant, young Veeck jettisons the team's white players and secretly recruits the legendary stars of the Negro Leagues, fielding a club that will go down in baseball annals as one of the greatest ever to play the game. Here are the behind-the-scenes adventures that bring this dream to reality, and a cast of characters only history's pen could create: the players themselves-the tragic Josh Gibson, the remarkable but self-centered Satchel Paige, the Cuban wonder Martin Dihigo, the veteran stalwarts Cool Papa Bell, Willie Wells, and Buck Leonard, and the rising stars Roy Campanella, Artie Wilson, and Dave Barnhill--plus Walter Winchell, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, and J. Edgar Hoover! The End of Baseball is the most rollicking, free-spirited baseball yarn in years, the unvarnished truth of that incredible season and the men who lived it.

Defensive Indifference:

"This book sounds weird."

Growing up, the Orioles were one of my favorite teams.

Players like Palmer, Grich, Bumbry, Singleton, Flanagan, Blair, Cuellar. Earl Weaver at the helm. Always fun to track and watch. Always grindy...

It seems like the once proud Orioles organization has been "Wirtzed". Obviously, it is tough to compete in the AL East, but at least the O's can be competitive once in a while. KC is near the level of respectability again.

This is my first fan post so I want to make it meaningful. I believe that it is a shame that there are not many African-American players in the majors, and at the same time, I also believe it's a shame that Jermaine is our only African-American player on my Sox. Not to say that Kenny (who is a great general manager based on the limits he has been given) has not tried (Tori Hunter for example), but I put the blame more on the major leagues. They (Bud Selig) seem more interested in exporting our game to the world rather then outreaching the communities who have no fields to play on and who could benefit from a sport that is part teamwork and part strategy. I really hope that one day there will be another Frank Thomas or Harold Baines wearing a Sox uniform, but in the mean time, let's hope Jermaine does not get injured or else there will be no more African-American major leaguers playing on the SOUTH SIDE of Chicago. What a shame.

Great, great day. The White Sox are winning, and tonight-drum roll please- is the first half-price night of the season and, correspondingly, my first game of the year. Sure, it's against the toothless A's and Greg Smith (???), but I'm no less excited. Added bonus, Buerhle is pitching so I might get home before 10PM and not have to hit Cook County to treat my pneumonia.

I will be in section 150 with the fi-ance. Text me @ 3129331275 if you want to talk smack.

But the real reason for the post is I wanted some help counting the fights tonight. From 150, I have a great view of the bleachers and the right side of the UD, but I'm not going to be able the see the left side of UD. Half-Price Mondays have the best trash brawls this side of a Thursday night at Bourbon Street. Due to the weather, I put the over-under at brawls at a far below average 4. Any physical confrontation from the moment you leave the house until you get home tonight counts. Let's see if the Pride of Midlothian and Alsip doesn't let us down!

Come On Yellow Jackets!

I'll come right out and say it, I am a fan of alcoholic beverages. I am not an alcoholic(Matt), but before, during, and after the games I like to have a few drinks and it makes Juan Uribe falling over as he swings that much funnier to me.

I live in the Northern Suburbs so getting the stadium is a hike for me, but I still make the trip because lets face it I have an obsession with the Sox, my ex even said she knew I loved the Sox more then her, I asked what was the give away. Anyhow thats way off topic, I usually drive up the cumberland station park the car and hop on the blue line to the red line, I buy a day pass to ride the lines cuz it makes way more sense. While on the blue line I always make sure I leave in plenty of time to stop off on Damon and go to my favorite microbrewery in the city. If you get off at Damon walk down the stairs and walk one block there is a quite little pizza and brewery called Peace/Piece Im not really quite sure on the spelling, it has some pretty decent pizza...its no deep dish, its actually what they call New Haven style Pizza. But the main reason to go there is that they are there own microbrewery and brew some of the best beer in the city. My favorite is the Baron von Awesome, and with a name like that how can it not be??

Anyhow, I just wanted to hear about your stories and your places to go drinking before or after the games. Its always nice to try some new places, and if you're ever near damon make sure to stop by this place you won't be disappointed.

enjoy the beers and the Sox,
