Sports Network | September 06, 2008

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Zach Duke hurled a complete game shutout to halt a painful winless streak and the Pittsburgh Pirates dispatched of the San Francisco Giants with a 7-0 triumph in the opener of a three-game set from AT&T Park. Duke (5-13) allowed six hits and two walks with four punch-outs for his first win in 14 starts and brought an end to his streak of nine consecutive losing decisions. Ryan Doumit had four hits and two runs scored while Brandon Moss knocked in three runs. Adam LaRoche chipped in with a pair of RBI for Pittsburgh, which won for the third time in four games following a 10-game losing streak. A reported 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck around 9 p.m. on the west coast during the top of the seventh. The epicenter was 28 miles east of San Francisco but the game continued without interruption. Kevin Correia (3-8) surrendered three runs on seven hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss for San Francisco, which lost for the sixth time in seven games. Rich Aurilia had two of the Giants' six singles off Duke. Back-to-back doubles from Doumit and Adam LaRoche in the second scored the game's first run and the Bucs added a run in the third on a Nate McLouth sac fly. Pittsburgh loaded the bases with one out in the fifth to chase Correia. Jack Taschner allowed a sac fly to Adam LaRoche before getting out of the inning, but the Pirates were up 3-0. McLouth and Doumit reached with singles in the seventh and Moss came through with a two-out, two-run triple off the center field wall and the lead was 5-0. A triple by Brian Bixler in the eighth off Osiris Matos set up a Nyjer Morgan sac fly, and Moss added a sac fly off Pat Misch in the ninth for the final margin after singles from McLouth and Andy LaRoche put a runner on third. Game Notes Pittsburgh swept a three-game series from the Giants at PNC Park back in May and is 14-3 against San Francisco since the start of the 2006 season.
