Recap: St. Louis vs. Florida

Sports Network | September 07, 2008

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Adam Wainwright threw eight dominant innings and Albert Pujols hit a two-run home run to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-1 win over Florida, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Wainwright (9-3) gave up the one run on six hits and a walk, and struck out six, to earn the win. The Cardinals have won two in a row, and moved within five games of Milwaukee for first in the NL wild card race. The Brewers were blown out, 10-1, by San Diego on Sunday. Felipe Lopez went 2-for-3, while Josh Phelps had a run-scoring pinch-hit for St. Louis. Josh Johnson (4-1) took the loss despite a solid outing. In 6 2/3 innings, the Marlins starter gave up three runs on seven hits and a pair of walks, while striking out five. Mike Jacobs homered as part of a 2-for-3 day to provide Florida's lone run. In the home first, Lopez worked a walk and Pujols followed with his 32nd home run of the season to give St. Louis an immediate 2-0 edge. Jacobs then led off the top of the second with his 30th homer of the year to bring the Marlins within one, and the score remained that way for most of the game. The Cardinals threatened in the fourth when Rick Ankiel worked a leadoff walk and went to third on Yadier Molina's single. But three consecutive groundouts killed the rally. Florida then had runners on the corners in the sixth with two outs, but Dan Uggla went down swinging. St. Louis gained an insurance run in the seventh. Aaron Miles tripled with two away, forcing Johnson out as Arthur Rhodes came on to pitch. Pinch-hitter Phelps greeted him with an RBI single to right to make it 3-1. Doug Waechter came on to get out of the inning, as Rhodes failed to record an out. Randy Flores got the first out of the ninth inning, and Chris Perez nailed down the other two to notch his seventh save of the season. Game Notes Marlins catcher Matt Treanor left in the second inning with an apparent leg injury...Pujols has homered in two consecutive games.
