Recap: San Francisco vs. Arizona

Sports Network | September 09, 2008

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Tim Lincecum struck out nine and came within two outs of his first career complete game, as the Giants played the role of spoiler in a 6-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Bengie Molina's three-run homer keyed a five-run third inning for San Francisco, which won its third in a row.

The Diamondbacks, losers in four straight and 12 of their last 16 games, remained 1 1/2 games behind Los Angeles for first place in the NL West as the Dodgers lost, 4-0, at San Diego Monday night.

Lincecum (16-3) was charged with seven hits and two runs -- one earned -- to win his fifth consecutive decision. The 8 1/3 innings were a career-best. He hasn't lost since July 20 versus Milwaukee and leads the majors with 225 strikeouts.

Pinch-hitter Jamie D'Antona recorded the lone RBI for Arizona in the opener of the three-game series.

Yusmeiro Petit (3-5) gave up eight hits and five runs in 2 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks.

Dave Roberts, Randy Winn and Pablo Sandoval singled to account for the game's first run, and Molina followed with a homer to left field. Roberts walked with the bases loaded later in the inning.

Molina doubled to start the seventh and scored on a Rich Aurilia base hit.

Lincecum loaded the bases in the ninth on a single by Adam Dunn, a doubled by Conor Jackson and a walk from Mark Reynolds. Alex Hinshaw then entered from the bullpen and D'Antona hit a potential double-play ball, but the return throw to first base caromed off Hinshaw's glove, and two runs scored. Sergio Romo pitched to Justin Upton for the final out of the game, recording a strikeout.
