Sports Network | September 18, 2008
Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Zack Greinke hurled eight shutout innings and Mike Aviles hit a three-run home run to help Kansas City throttle Seattle 12-0 to complete a four-game sweep at Kauffman Stadium.
Greinke (12-10) gave up just two hits and walked one while fanning seven to take the win. Alex Gordon and Mitch Maier knocked in two runs each and Mark Teahen was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Royals, who won their seventh straight game for the first time since the club strung together a nine-game win streak to start the 2003 season.
Ryan Feierabend (1-4) was pounded for eight runs on six hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings of work to take the loss for Seattle, which managed only three hits in dropping its eighth consecutive game.
The Royals started their barrage in the third. Gordon walked and Alberto Callaspo reached on a single before David DeJesus plated a run with an RBI single and Aviles followed with a three-run homer to left and a 4-0 lead.
A five-run fourth put the game out of reach early with Greinke dealing. KC loaded the bases with one out and Maier laced an two-run single to right. Jared Wells came on for Seattle but didn't fare much better. A wild pitch right out of the gate scored a run while Ryan Shealy and Teahen added run- scoring singles later in the frame for a 9-0 lead.
The Royals then added runs in the fifth on a pinch-hit RBI single from Joey Gathright and in the sixth on a two-run double from Gordon to account for the final 12-0 margin.
