The Juan Uribe Shooting: Somebody's Lying

When we first got a quote from Juan Uribe's agent regarding his recent run in with the law, I almost made a comment that I hoped he had the strings pulled tight on his tin-can-phone, but I thought better of it -- Remembering Steve Lyons quick exit from the FOX booth, I didn't want to lose my prestigious post here atop South Side Sox. Instead I made a crack about the 'very reliable guy in the Dominican.' I didn't understand why that part of the quote was necessary. Now I do...

The most recent report contradicts the agent's claim that Uribe had spoken with authorities. Not only that, but a bench warrant has been issued for Uribe, and his brother and bodyguard have already been arrested.

So either Uribe's agent was lying, and he never really talked to Uribe, who the authorities can't seem to locate, or Uribe was lying when he said that he had contacted the policia. Either scenario seems plausible, but I think the former is more likely. After all, Uribe's brother and bodyguard have been arrested. The police were able to locate them.

It pains me to say this, but it appears that Uribe is on the lam.

Are you a Univ. of Miami fan?

Our guy is accused of( or at least questioned about) shooting a oule of seemingly peaceful guys with either a pistol or shotgun and you want him to act all 50 Cent with the cameras rolling? Perhaps he is listening to someone with sense telling him to tone it down.

Despite all the folks dreaming about Gay-Rod I'd really prefer to see Uribe in the proper stripes next year.

After all this...

I think I'd be happy with Uribe gone next year. And I write this despite having been very pro-Uribe in the past. It sucks because none of the realistic replacements make the Sox a stronger team. I think Juan's defense is extremely valuable. But shooting a couple of guys and then pushing around camera people...that's not good.

I suppose there's some chance that Juan wasn't involved and the victims are going after him for money (the farmer filed a civil suit). But given the police interest, that seems unlikely (more likely that Juan was involved and the victims are after some money).

I'm just erring on the side of caution, innocent until proven guilty and all that legal mumbo jumbo.

I've seen the tape of Uribe and the photogs outside the courtroom on ESPN. They would have shown him accosting a cameraman if they had it on film, but they haven't shown it all day. It's just video of him getting through the media horde, with the help of two (presumed) bodyguards, as quickly as possible. I think that bit has been overblown.
