depending upon where JR wants the payroll
Now I just wonder who they're looking to add to the team.

I think KW just wanted more young pitching
At this point, barring a trade for more young pitching, I think the only additions to the team will be a trade for a left-handed reliever and signing Sandy Alomar. Just my opinion of course...KW is the only that really knows what he's planning.

My complements
Combine the table with the "Billy Beane" strategy that seems to make a lot of sense, and I think you have the direction that KW is and will be taking.
Now its just a matter of "who for who"...

dude, they'd laugh
This is Jon Daniels were talking about. You're probably lucky to get Hurley and Masset for Garland and Podsednik.
...and I really don't see how that helps the 2007 team at all. The Sox aren't rebuilding.

first off
Secondly Volquez is looking like Floyd right now, he has been bouncing around alot. Hurley is a very nice prospect but let me reiterate prospect, Daniels has expressed interest in keeping Young in Texas for a long time, which would make Arais expendable. If one year of Garcia brought the sox a reclamation project and Gio on a down year i would expect Garland at two years below market value to bring in that and then some.
Juan Pierre last year brought the marlins 3 good pitching prospects one who might be their closer by opening day(nolasco), Scott Podsednik at 2.9mil and 4.5(possibly) for two years in this inflated market is a bargain, we as sox fans may not appreciate him, but that doesn't mean he isn't a "steal" in this current atmosphere.
The Rangers still need pitching and a lead off hitter, scott does suck on defense but i wouldn't put it past them or any team for that matter(rockies/padres) to think he could play CF.

sweet, bring up something from like 2 weeks ago
Anyways, Volquez isn't quite Floyd. Volquez has actually put up some pretty solid years the past couple years, including very solid peripherals between A+ and AA last year (somewhere around K/BB of 4, K/9 of 9, 1.20 WHIP and an ERA around 4.15 in about 125 IP), and he had a pretty solid year in AAA this past year(3.21 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP with a K/9 >9, and a very good hit rate). However, he struggled with command and walked >4.5 per 9. He's been bad in the majors, but he has shown ability in the minors. Floyd on the other hand, was horrendous in 2005, though this past year, he was solid but not spectacular in AAA (probably comparable to Volquez overall statistically). However, I really don't think the Rangers have soured on Volquez like the Phillies had on Floyd ; that was one of the biggest factors in why they were so willing to deal him.
Gio Gonzalez is in the second tier of SP prospects in the minors right now - probably a 2-3 starter at the MLB level. Hurley's got potential to be an ace. How do their values compare equally?
What's Daniels going to say regarding Young, that he wants him to get the hell out of town? And regardless, just because said player is blocked doesn't mean Arias can't move to a different position, or that he doesn't have other value in a different trade. He's talented as hell, and space will be created for him, or he'll be sent as part of a package for a starter that's proven to be better than Garland.
Also, is Masset just thrown in? What, does Texas hate him or something?
Regarding the Cubs...they're idiots first of all. Secondly, Juan Pierre's a leadoff hitter that was traded in a completely different trade market. There's no valid comparison in that regard.
Horacio Ramirez netted a lights out reliever, and he's only slightly worse than Garland...and that was considered a steal. What you are suggesting is a grand larceny.
They need pitching, surely, but already have Padilla and Millwood, and have money to throw around at free agents. It was just last year that a Boras represented starting pitcher landed in Texas, and with a 9 digit offer reportedly on the table (as well as it also reportedly neving being on the table), I could see Zito back with the Rangers next year. And regardless of that, with their collection of pitching - including Loe, Tejada, Volquez, Rheinecker, Koronka - I doubt they are going to give up such a package to bring in a mediocre leadoff hitter and a league average starter. This is Jon Daniels we're talking about here, not Jim Hendry.

freddy
but I can't understand why didn't he wait more
I don't see how the market could've gotten worse if he had waited 2-4 or more weeks
he may very well have ended up getting more
what do you think?

Room to Maneuver
- Sox can NOT go backwards. Cubs are being very aggressive, and if Sox slip attendance will tank again. They need to keep seats filled, so they can't back up the truck.
- But if they were serious about trading Garland then they must think the poor pitching last year wasn't a fluke and they need to rebuild the staff.

A couple issues
- His lifetime OBP is the same as Podsednik's last year. He had a lower OBP than Pods despite hitting 30 points higher, and hasn't had an above-average season since playing in Colorado.
- He kinda quit on the Red Sox when he wasn't getting enough playing time.
