Pronk was not in Shrek, Jackass!

For the first time since I've moved to the blog here to South Side Sox, Firefox crashed, eating a large post in the process. I don't have the energy to retype it all out tonight, so here's an outline version.

  • Freddy is getting killed by good hitting teams. The Tigers, Indians, and Blue Jays have made Freddy Garica look like Felix Diaz this season. Take a look at his numbers against those teams.
    IP H R ER HR BB K ERA 38.1 54 35 34 12 16 28 7.98
I realize you can probably do the same thing for Jon Garland, and maybe even Javier Vazquez; but the difference is both of those pitchers seem to have all of their 'stuff.' Freddy, despite some added life to his fastball lately, still looks like a junkballer.
  • Brian Anderson should play more often against right-handers, specifically sinkerballers. I've asked for this in the past, so I was very pleased to see him in the line-up, and not at all surprised that he responded with a 2-4 night at the plate. -- My theory is that he's getting under the ball too much, and that the sinker's action helps him make more solid contact. Just a theory though.
  • Sean Tracey showed you why he is a project tonight. I don't know if I've ever seen a White Sox pitcher have such little command of the strike zone. He was channeling Rick Vaughn tonight. -- He's got a tantalizing fastball though. Let's hope Coop can reign him in.

Interesting project
Tracey has major league pitches.  I give Coop a very small chance at harnessing Tracey's talent into something useful at this level though.

Thome, PK, Dye...
...go 7-33 on the weekend, including 2-22 on Saturday and Sunday. PK and obviously Dye came through in the 8th (and Dye in the 6th as well) on Friday, but we can't have a disappearing act by all three of these guys for any stretch of time.

actually, we can...
that's what is great about this team. It isn't 3-4-5 and that's it, like the 90's and 00's teams of say  Frank, Maggs and Carlos, or frank, albert and robin...

We have the best 3-4-5 in baseball, but we have the 2nd best record cuz we have a good 1-14 hitting...

Think about it this way: every position player has contributed to a win this year, and we aren't half the way thru yet. We need every Pablo, Cintron and Mack hit or HR to top off our nights that Jimbo, Paulie and Jermaine don't hit. And they have done the job so far this year. Our bench is better than any other bench in MLB, and we wouldn't be fighting for 1st place or the best record in baseball without them.

Unlike last year, our defense (other than maybe Crede and Anderson) has been porous from time to time and our hitting has saved us...all of it, from Pods to BA.

So while our 3-4-5 had a rough stretch, they will rebound. They are the best in the bigs, and our bench, again, has contributed mightily and will continue to do so.

Last year our bullpen saved us, this year our bench will.

Also a little concerned that...
on Friday night and tonight, we only walked once per game. I was at both and the lack of patience was apparent.

Stopped the DVR
in the middle of the ninth inning so something else could record.  I'd turned away from the game after it was 8-2 and had given up on it.  Imagine my surprise to see the Sox put up a six spot in the ninth.
I know the Sox took the loss but I can't help but feel that they probably feel pretty good after that one.  Down eight runs in the ninth and they got the tying run to the plate.  Also can't imagine how disheartening that must be for Cleveland.  Their bullpen just got kicked around this weekend.

This loss...
...almost felt like a win. (Almost.)

4 out of 6 against Detroit and Cleveland...not bad!

ESPN's lack of knowledge...
...has gone from funny to disturbing.

At the beginning of the game, they were describing Freddy, and one of the key points is that he throws everything hard. I just shook my head; has anyone from ESPN watched Freddy pitch this year?? (Don't answer that.)

interesting
I stopped watching when it was 9-2 and went to a friends house.  I checked the score on his computer to see if BA got his 2nd hit, and I saw the 10-8 score.  Imagine if Pablo would have hit a walk off HR.

I predict...
Sox 4-3
Detroit 5-2 (Cubs won't know what hit 'em)

Bah, humbug...I actually have to root for the Scrubs.

I was at the game...
Freddy was hovering near 100 pitches in the top of the 5th and Ozzie felt the need to leave him in for yet another home run.

I think Freddy needs just a little "fire." Not over-the-top psychotic "Zambrano" fire, but the guy looks bored and indifferent on the mound.

Unfortunately I left at the top of the 8th, so I missed the rally. The only good thing I got to see all night was Cintron's homer and the "Sox Pride" girls...YYYYYYES!

FREDDIE GARCIA
all teams
7-4 5.13

minus 2 cleveland games
7-2 4.05

(9.2 innings/15 runs)

maybe he shouldn't pitch against cleveland

-it was fun to watch the ending sunday night!

dave van dyck:
"I don't know yet. It's up to Jim on how he feels. I cannot let this guy not play in nine games. At some point he's going to have to play first base one game."

mack at the infield?
dave van dyck:
Already having played all three outfield positions, apparently third and first base are next on the agenda for Rob Mackowiak. The emphasis will be on third because of Joe Crede's bothersome back."We're going to play the National League, and I might have to make double switches," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I want the guy to be ready to play any position." Guillen also said Pablo Ozuna will start taking more pregame ground balls at second.

joe cowley:

Guillen has asked Rob Mackowiak to start taking ground balls at second and third base to enhance his versatility, especially as the Sox head into interleague play. "I want my guys to be able to play a few positions,'' Guillen said. "We'll see if Mackowiak can play there because Ozuna hasn't played much at second base this year.''

No doubt about it...
Freddy gave up all those dingers yesterday due to QuesTec.

I love Buehrle
but he's whines about a lot of shit.  Questec, lights on the scoreboard, Maddux spitballs, just shut up and pitch.
