First Thing
That jumps out is that the peripherals aren't that much better but the HR's are way, way down.

Sometimes pitcher's just get unlucky, and sometimes they have a good sinker working.

I'm not sure what the case is with Garland, but I'm thrilled he's doing better results wise.

yes
It is funny that his calmness on the mound, once mistakened for not caring is now one of his best attributes.

Even thought the walk numbers are similar
it seems to me that Jon was always pitching from 2-0 and 3-1 in the first half and now gets ahead of the hitter.  I really think that part of the reduciton in HR's allowed is not always being behind.  Finally, his complete transformation over time this year gives the eternal optimist in me the hope that Javy, Mark and even Freddy will do the same.

Thank you Matt Karchner
for being just mediocre enought that the Cubs would want to trade for you.

Just like in real estate
Its location location location.

BTW - I don't think the rest of the staff is far behind Garland. And we'll see today if there is such a think as Javie 'Big Game' Vasquez.

rough but telling:
i think H/IP often tells a pretty accurate story about a pitcher's effectiveness.  some pitchers give up more H per inning as a rule (Buehrle, for example) but can offset that with good control.  therefore, an appreciable change in H/IP is a strong indicator of where the pitcher is headed.  (i know BABIP is one of those uncontrollable factors that would influence H/IP, but i haven't looked it up)

the big difference between Garland's 1st and 2nd half numbers above is the H/IP, which is going in the right direction, and is now close to 1 to 1.  last night he gave up 5 in 7.2 IP.  as we all know, he was dominant, getting the sox a much needed win.

freddy, on the other hand has historically posted a 1-1 H/IP ratio, or even slightly better.  this year, for the first time, his H/IP has gone way south: 160/185.2.  (obviously, his WHIP is up substantially as a result, and, also, his ERA)

so, while i think we can reasonably expect garland to keep on truckin', freddy will likely keep on suckin'.

Even better
Garland allowed three of those four HR in one start.  So 10 out of those 12 starts have been homerless.

And
3 earned or less in 9 of those 12 starts.

For the record
I don't think its sad. If anything its great for the staff to have someone step up. Makes that new contract look good too.

I also think Buehrle is poised to make a run.

It's sad that
of our much-vaunted "six aces," the only one who's thrown worth a damn recently is Garland.  His numbers aren't exactly ace-worthy.  In fact, they're  worse than we projected.  It's sad that everyone else regressed so much more than Garland that Garland is our ace by default.

Great game
Whatever else, Garland threw a great game last night.

He has been very productive and he has really turned in a good season, especially lately.

Thank you
Always raining on the parade - Count wasn't the ace until the 2nd half last year.  The "ace" just might not be the same guy week in, week out.  That's what is great about 5 starters who have a good, not great, track record.  (And re: expectations, wasn't Garland compiling those numbers last year as the #5 starter - easier comps, to be sure.

So, ondafarm, I appreciate your giving props where they belong. We win possibly our most important game of the year last night, and it's "sad".  I wonder how the blog looked last year after the Series win - perhaps already lamenting that we'd have to break up the team.  The negativity is getting suffocating.

i was looking back
at all the anti-garland diaries posted earlier this season. cheat said on one of them that he'd "enjoy bringing this post back up when garland is our best pitcher in the second half." yup.

I'm glad I was wrong; but for him to be our best
pitcher in the 2nd half is not exactly something to be excited about.

by southsidefan on Aug 20, 2006 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

why not?
i'll take anyone with that ERA. i don't see why him doing it as opposed to someone else matters at all. i'm just disappointed our other pitchers are pitching so poorly. there's a reason garland was a #1 pick - because he's capable of pitching like this.

by larry on Aug 20, 2006 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions

That's my point, too. I'm also
disappointed that our oyher pitchers are not doing well.

by southsidefan on Aug 20, 2006 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

leadoff man
Now that CF has pretty well resolved itself (in our minds, and almost but not quite in Ozzie's), and now that the pitching staff is much improved, the last remaining problem area is the leadoff spot. I think a lot of last year's success had to do with the Sox getting early leads (like in the first), putting pressure on the other team and taking it off the rest of our batting order.

Any solutions in sight?
