Here lies the 2006 Chicago White Sox

If ever there was a solitary game that could, all at once, remove the heart of a team who is just half a game out of a playoff spot... this was it. The White Sox entered this game knowing full well that they needed to take Game 1 of this series, because the Twins send Johan Santana to the mound tomorrow. The loss means, in all likelihood, the Twins will leave town with at least a half game lead in the Wild Card, and that's only if Mark Buehrle suddenly remembers how to pitch.

The game started off on such a promising note. Scratch that. Scott Podsednik was still in the leadoff spot, so it didn't start out all that well, but by the end of the first inning, things were looking up, thanks to a Jermaine Dye walk and Paul Konerko HR. The Sox continued their attack against Brad Radke in the second, pushing across another run, though it probably should have been more with one of the outs being made at home. (Thanks Joey!) Javier Vazquez even appeared to be on the cusp of his second quality start since June. Then he gave up the first HR of the year to Nick Punto, and every Sox fan on earth could feel the meltdown coming.

Javier wasn't happy about how the 1-0 pitch to Punto was called, and right on cue, his 2-0 pitch left the yard. After the HR, I was rooting so hard for Vazquez to get out of the inning without allowing another baserunner, and not becuase I wanted to brag about my pre-game prediction. The WCIU cameras had panned down to the White Sox bullpen to show the tandem of Neal Cotts and David Riske warming in the pen. As uneasy as I was with Vazquez pitching in the 6th inning of a tight game, I knew I would be even more on edge -- with good reason -- with either of those two in the game. Sure enough, Vazquez allowed the next two batters to rope the ball, and was pulled.

* * * * *

Until tonight, I thought the single biggest bullpen management blunder of the season by Ozzie Guillen was using Boone Logan to pitch to Travis Hafner in the 8th inning of a 1-run game in the third game of the year. Ozzie's decision to turn to Neal Cotts tonight was worse, if only for the reason that with Logan he didn't know what the kid could do. With Cotts, he knew full well what he's been doing lately.

  • Cotts hasn't had an outing without allowing a hit since August 6, a span of 8 games.
  • In his last 4 games against Minnesota, Cotts allowed 4 runs on 6 hits in just 3 innings.
  • Justin Morneau entered the game 4-9 with a HR against Cotts.
  • Cotts has allowed lefties to hit .429/.474/.686 since July 8th. That's 15/35 with 6 extra-base hits and 2 walks.
We're talking Cliff Politte bad here, and Ozzie Guillen brought him in to the biggest game of the year to face the tying run. Terrible.

I wasn't pleased to see David Riske enter in such a tight, important game either, but his use is at least somewhat defensible. It was unfortunate that he gave up a HR to Hunter, essentially killing the Sox chance at the game, but the other likely candidate in that sitation, Brandon McCarthy, hasn't exactly been the model of consistency this season, or been particularly good at avoiding the longball, for that matter.  Plus, there may be something going on with McCarthy that we don't know about. He's been conspicuously inactive for much of the last two weeks.

* * * * *

For the second straight game, the Sox may have seen something that hasn't happened in major league history. Yesterday it was the 5-7-3 putout. Today, it was the game-ending walk-off fan interference call, which was the right call, but just added to the It's Not Our Year vibe that has been building this season.

one of the worst ozzie decisions was not pinch hitting for pods in the 6th, with two runners on and a lefty on the mound.  for someone obsessed with arm matchups like ozzie, leaving pods in is unexusable.

it's time for pods to go.  yes, he did manage to get on base in the 9th, but only after stranding 4 runners earlier in the game.  this guy doesn't deserve to be on a major league roster.  our young CF, who plays phenomenal defense and is batting .300 since july is being platooned while pods is allowed to butcher plays in LF and strike out looking.

joe cora must go too.  this is the 2nd time in two weeks where being thrown out of the plate not only cost us a run, but changed the whole momentum of the game.  the same thing happened against KC.

but who does ozzie blame for this loss?  himself for one of the worst managed games of the year?  no, of course not.  he blames his team for not coming to play.

i'm angry, i'm depressed and i'm thinking about heading back out to the wilderness.  this time, i'm sure i'll make it longer than a day.

Well, it was a good run...
I haven't been the biggest fan of Kenny Williams, but I think he did good job this year. Even acknowledging that the Vazquez-Young trade might go down as one of the worst trades in MLB history (Brock for Broglio style), it was defensible at the time. Williams even guessed that the Sox would need more pitching when few would have thought so, and he got the best arm out there (and someone many stats guys pegged as a big rebound candidate).

And Vazquez has gone out and had a season worse than just about anyone would have imagined. Add to that Buehrle, Garcia, Politte, and Cotts pitching far, far beyond just bad....well, that's been just too much to overcome. Even so, in a weaker division or league they might have made the playoffs just the same.

Anyway, I'll be leaving the country in a week and a half, and it will honestly be a relief not to have to find a newspaper in Germany carrying Sox box scores. When I get back, I think I'll buy the 2005 season DVD...

It's not our year
I hate the Twins.  I have been to the Cell for four straight losses to them and I had to sit in front of some moronic Twins fan that never stopped yelling "woo-hoo" at everthing they did even when they were down 3-0.  I had to sit through the Bartlett home run a few weeks back, now Nick fucking Punto and Torii with two i's Hunter.  Neal Cotts sucks - EVERYONE knows it, and here he comes trotting in from left field in a crucial situation.  I'm so mad - and yet I have tickets to Saturday and Sunday.

Did I say I hate the Twins?

The worst thing that could happen...they win the World Series and we have to continue to hear about Kirby Puckett.

You guys can give up...
but the Sox playoff hopes are not dead, nor do they rest solely on the outcome of this series.

That being said, we will beat Santana tomorrow.  I am predicting right now, that we will win this series.

i'm with ya
win the next two and we look better in the standings then we did waking up today, and whats up with brock/ chris young, give me a break, this kids lucky if he turns out to be as good as marquis grissom or devon white!

Quit dreaming of winning 15 in a row and catching the Tigers in 3 weeks, this is a marathon, and they took a five second lead with about 8 miles to go, not really time to fire the sponsor and the coach!!!!

by tubesox on Aug 26, 2006 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I said Young *could* be a Brock for Broglio
Odds are big against Young being Grissom or White let alone a HOF caliber player, I know. But having seen him play a couple games, he just looks really smooth...it's completely unscientific but I think he's a future all-star CF. And anyway, my post above was meant to praise KW at a pretty dismal point in the season.

If the Sox beat Santana tomorrow, I'll recant my implied dismissal of the Sox playoff chances

In complete agreement on Young...
basically just saw 2ABs and it was easy to get the sense about him that he's going to be a very good player for whatever reason.  I think KW thought Coop could find the Expo in Javy, and it just hasn't happened.  Still might...

Doesn't seem that bad to me...
From Merkin's wrap:
"We showed up to play ball. There's no doubt in my mind. We showed up to win," Guillen said. "But I looked at the other side, to my right side, and I think they showed up to kick our butt this weekend. There's no doubt in my mind. Those guys were at the top of the rail [in the dugout], rooting for each other. Even when they were down, they were pulling for each other.

"I think when they do that, those guys come here to try to beat you. They will if you let them. I would rather compete against another ballclub, because those kids are pesky. Look at the other side, and you're like, 'Wow.'

"If we don't wake up, they will sweep us in the weekend," Guillen forcefully added. "We'd better start to wake up and start to play hard against those guys."

I didn't hear it live though...

In other news, Javier sounds like he was the anti-Garcia in talking to the press and taking heat for a 5 inning start. No mention of a lack of offense. I wish he could somehow find some magic and turn into a good pitcher again.

by hitlesswonder on Aug 26, 2006 12:59 AM CDT up reply actions

we better wake up and play hard....
ozzie is the only one who needs to wake up.  our guys came to play.  we put up 2 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd and would have had more if it wasn't for joey cora.  of course it's hard to score runs when your leadoff hitter is an automatic out.

maybe what he said wasn't so bad, but if i was on the team, i'd take offense to that wake up or be swept part.  they didn't put in neal cotts.  they didn't put in david riske.  they didn't forget about jenks in the 9th.  they played hard and kept the game close.  a good manager was the difference in this one.

I'm sorry but not a single person sits on there ass when a pop up is coming straight toward you. It's like instinct.  YOU HAVE to go for it.

My only beef is when people lean over and rob extra base hits, which in turn makes them ground rule doubles or what not. But pop ups I have no problem with. Throw a hundred different "true" fans in that seat and most everyone makes that same play.

a major key is getting production from 1 and 2.

Chicago: Pods + Iguchi + Cintron= 1-10 3Ks

Sweeney.....
2-4 with 2 2Bs, a walk, no ks tonight.  It's a pipedream but I'd love to see him up here.

by stanchar on Aug 26, 2006 1:08 AM CDT up reply actions

that's 23 extra-base hits since the AAA ASG
Entering the night, he was 7th in the IL in OPS against RHP. 3 of the guys ahead of him are non-prospects, the other three were Elijah Dukes (who knows what's going to happen to him), Delmon Young (probably the best prospect in baseball) and Chris Denorfia (who is a little old, but still a spec)

Sweeney can hit righties in the show right now. He'll be ready by the middle of next year. Or ready for a platoon situation as soon as opening day '07. I'd leave him down there to start next year to work on his hitting vs. LHP if I had my way.

by The Cheat on Aug 26, 2006 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Who's your 2007 LF?
What do you with Pods? Let him go, trade him?

If we are just biding time for Sweeney what about a 1 year deal with Dave Roberts? A Roberts/Ozuna platoon? Roberts is old, but plays vs RHP, .377 OBP, 37 SBs...

by stanchar on Aug 26, 2006 1:26 AM CDT up reply actions

I try to trade Pods
If you have no takers, you just non-tender him.

I would be fine with a LF platoon of Byrnes and Sweeney. Both can play CF, which would move Mackowiak to 4th on the CF depth chart, and down to 3rd in LF and RF. He would still be the primary back-up at 3B, so it's not like he would be totally buried.

But I think the Sox should be thinking bigger. They have a chance to majorly upgrade with Pods & Freddy on the move.

AIM: SouthSideCheat

by The Cheat on Aug 26, 2006 1:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I know you didn't ask me, but...
I would trade Pods...I think he could still be part of a package that would bring something back.

This is probably nuts, but I wonder if the Orioles would trade Brian Roberts for Pods, Iguchi, and Fields (maybe add Garcia with the Sox taking some of his salary and the Sox get a pitching propsect as well). I know that Baltimore wants to lock up Roberts and he says he wants to stay, but that package might be tempting.

Anyway, I'd like the Sox to have a middle infielder who can have an OBP of .360 and enough speed that Ozzie thinks he's lead-off hitter. Then they can put a real glove and bat in LF to offset the regression by Crede, Dye, and Thome next year.

by hitlesswonder on Aug 26, 2006 1:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Can't believe Pods hit against Reyes
Of all the times to not play the lefty-righty matchup. Ozzie must absolutely think that Anderson cannot hit major league pitching. That and playing Mack in CF really make me wonder about BA's future with Sox under Guillen. I starting to have a hard time believing he'll be more than a platoon player with the Sox current management.

by hitlesswonder on Aug 26, 2006 1:14 AM CDT up reply actions

It's curious.....
you really have to wonder.  Could it be somethink like Ozzie doesn't like how BA prepares for games? Either he shows up at the park late, goofs around during batting practice, etc..? I don't know...just searching for something here, but it usually comes back to Rob has pics of Guillen with farm animals.

Cintron
Gotta wonder what was Cintron thinking about in the 9th, not even swinging on the 2 strike breaking ball right down the heart of the plate.  He definitely was praying for a ball there. Remenicent of a deer in caught in headlights.

Jesus, the "vibe" of 2006 has been different - did you expect any less?  We couldn't have gotten more breaks last year - but we're a freaking 1/2 out after losing a close, tough game.  Last September Ozzie was ready to retire if they didn't win, so he's not Mr. Bedrock of emotion.

Get thee off the ledge for now.  Santana has an ERA over 3, we HAVE beaten him in the past, and freaking KC/TB seems to be able to beat us at surprising times.  So embrace the game.  We're not talking about moving to Canada because you've been drafted - we're talking about our Sox.

Keep the faith.

At least there are only two more Twin
position players left to hit their first home run of the season in a crucial situation against the White Sox (Tyner and Redmond).  I fully expect dingers from both by the end of the week.

There - I'm officially through my bitter mourning period after last night's fiasco.  Now can we PLEASE score a few on Joe-han tonight?

Way too early
to give up hope.  Especially when an already injured Twins starter leaves a game after two innings.  If Radke's out the Twigs have Santana and four inconsistent/rookies starting for them.
Last night's game actually reminded me of the 1-0 loss that Garcia suffered at the dome last August.  The one where he only gave up the one hit, a homer to Jacque Jones.  They played well but lost.  These games happen.

Brilliant Ozzie
Ozzie's antics are often excused because he makes "brilliant" use of his pitching staff.  And, yes, his use of the pitching staff was great last year en route to the championship.  But the Sox just lost a one run game to their key rival without their bullpen ace ever taking the field.  They lost a one run game to their key rival with their two worst relievers pitching the key sequence of the game.  Nothing brilliant about that.

fair enough
The bullpen management was real bad last night. I would have put Thorton in the 6th, but that's me.

That being said, the vibe this year is different because YOUR vibe is different. Last year we didn't even sniff second-place, even as our record in late August/September wasn't so hot.

Your attitude is not going to affect the team, but it will affect yourself. Why not just enjoy such a great team, and if they make the playoffs enjoy the ride like last year, and if not, thank God that you aren't a North Side fan...

I hear the optimistic side
Just dumbfounded by the poor decisions Ozzie made last night.  It seems pretty obvious to use your best lefty reliever to take on their best lefty bat seeing as thornton can go longer than 1 out anyway.

I'll agree that there's a lot of baseball left, but when you are managing like crap, there are going to be a lot of losses left.  I just hope that Ozzie pulls it out (his head from his ass that is).

Put in Roblo in LF, Anderson in CF, and for god's sake, use the bullpen like you actually want to win.

Who is Fat Loser Who Interfered
I was sitting pretty close to the interference and disagree that the ball would have been caught.  Unlike a lot of haters out there who would rather dis Ozzie and team and whine about the season being in the tank I really believe that the ball would have been dropped and we might have gone on to win the game.  The fat loser who decided to interfere should be banned from the park.  I heard some caller on the radio say that the hard thing about banning him from the park is that he looks like 90% of the White Sox fans.  It is losers like this that give real sox fans a bad name.

Please stop...
trying to turn the fan interference into a big story (I am sure ESPN doesn't need any help in doing that).

Is it a crappy way to end the game?  Hell yeah it was.  Does that mean even a small share of the loss should go on that guy's shoulders?  Not at all.  There are so many people you can blame:  Javy, Cotts, Riske, Ozzie, Joey, AJ (nobody even mentions the pitch select to Torii which was beyond idiotic, Farmio was going nuts about it), the offense in general for not being able to take advantage of Radke's early departure.

It was one of those losses where the Sox had all the momentum in the world and let it go, and so it stings with fans really bad (did anyone else think that number 4.5 was looking absolutely beautiful?).  Despite the picture on this post, the White Sox' post season chances are far from over and I really strongly agree with the poster above who was talking about the "vibe" of this team having more to do with your own attitude than the team's execution.  I really let that game ruin my night last night (and ruin my morning consequently), and while I want to blame one of those people I listed above, I really have nobody to blame but myself (and maybe Johnnie Walker a little bit).  Just stay positive.  And for God's sake... leave that fan alone.  You guys don't want to look like Cubs fans, do you?

I still think this team has some good veterans who will keep this interesting through the end of the season.  I know Ozzie will help keep them motivated, too.

The Twins are done......
Even if they win tonight. Radke has a torn rotator cuff and couldn't even go 3 innings last night. I would be surprised if he doesn't go on the DL soon. Liriano is on the DL. Baker has sucked. Garza has been mediocre or worse. Silva sucks.

They essentially have one great starting pitcher. In fact I would at this point take any of our guys over anyone of their guys except Santana (at least for the rest of this year). As bad as our guys have been they haven't been as bad as what the Twins have left.

Punto, Bartlett, Tyner are all playing way over their heads. They'll come back to earth. You heard it here first we're winning the wild card!

by bhoov on Aug 26, 2006 2:18 PM CDT reply actions

I truly hate the Twins
and I would love it for them to be "done", but...
Liriano is throwing and is said to feel fine (I know, you can't go by what they say, but I wouldn't scratch him just yet).  Garza just threw a great game against the Orioles (I know - it's the Orioles who actually have Chris Widger on their roster).  Silva is mediocre - but I would put him on par with two or three of our starters right now.

I hope you are right about winning the wildcard, but I think it has to be more of us getting our asses in gear and less about the Twins folding their tents.

by randy77 on Aug 26, 2006 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

You are really underestimating the Twins...
Shocking as it is, both Garza and Bonser are pitching well right now. Better than anyone in the Sox rotation not named Garland. The Twins pitching without Radke and Liriano is still better than the Sox. And right now their offense is at least as good. Punto and Tyner just need to stay hot a few more weeks, and the Twins will make the playoffs. They might win the division.

If the Sox rotation has a collective flashback to 2005, they have shot. But after 3 months of sucking it starting to look like it's not a slump, it's just who they are.

That being said, how I would love to see Santana lose a game to the Sox...I hope Jose can dig deep and find something special for tonight's game.
