JD needs a nickname

It's often said that the baseball season is not a sprint, but a marathon. It's best to remember that saying during games like this one.

Jon Garland spotted the D-Rays an early lead after an inconsistent first inning that included a HR, a HBP, and 3 singles. In truth, he didn't pitch as poorly as the scoreboard showed after one frame, but the Rays hit some good pitches, crushed a mistake, and took advantage of the free baserunner.

Garland looked like he had settled down with quick 2nd and 3rd innings, but a leadoff triple by Jorge Cantu in the 4th gave the Rays a 4-run lead that looked like it might hold up. Now, normally, a 4-run lead by the Devil Rays doesn't have me sweating all that much, but by then the Sox had already stranded 4 runners including leadoff double that never even advanced to third. It just didn't appear to be the Sox night.

Front and center in the Sox offensive woes on the night was Scott Podsednik. He looked like pre-July-'05 Podsednik the last two games, but that must have been a mirage. Pods' 0-5 night included 4 strikeouts and no productive outs. Usually, I wouldn't bring up productive outs, but Pods had 2 opportunites to help get the Sox an easy run by just making the right type of outs, and he could even do that. I fully expect to see Ross Gload, who has been taking extra work in the outfield, start in LF tomorrow.

Garland's outing reminded me of his August 4th start against the Blue Jays. It was the kind of outing that you expect from your ace. Or it was the salvaging of what looked to be a poor outing that you'd expect from an ace. After digging himself a hole, he just kept putting zeros and waiting for the offense to at least take him off the hook for the loss.

Jermaine Dye didn't hit any homeruns and had 0 RBI on the night, yet he still found a way to make a huge impact. He had two stolen bases to get himself into scoring position in the late innings, and on both occasions he scored just pitches later. In the seventh, Jorge Cantu gave his best Tony Graffanino impression letting an routine dribbler go between his legs to score Dye from second. Just like in the playoffs, Tadahito Iguchi followed with key HR, but this one was an inning later. Dye's SB in the 8th was followed immediately by a line-drive single by Jim Thome, who made his return to the line-up after missing the last 5 games with a tight hamstring, plating the eventual winning run.

* * * * *

For the second time in a week, there was a rarely (if ever) seen game-ender. This time the Sox were on the winning end, with Rocco Baldelli hitting into a 9-3-6 DP to close the game out.

With Ben Zobrist at first, Baldelli lined out to deep right field. Zobrist was off on the pitch, and had rounded second base when Dye caught the ball. Dye appeared to forget about the runner for a second, but rocketed the ball back in to Konerko to just miss the force at first base. After Zobrist was called safe at first, Konerko threw to Uribe at second for the appeal. Second base umpire Joe West ruled that Zobrist never retagged second after over-running the bag, calling him out to end the game.

Did you guys already talk about the
fact that Thome aggravated the hammie injury in the bottom of the 8th and is a scratch for tomorrow?

unfortunately
thome tweaked his hamstring again on that game winning hit. i'm not liking this.

by larry on Aug 30, 2006 11:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i didn't notice the new name before
thome has to be the talking point after the game. obviously the hit was big but the injury could be bigger. i don't like nagging hamstrings. this is the sort of injury you don't want older players to get.

by larry on Aug 30, 2006 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No doubt. He works as hard as anybody,
but you can't help but wonder if he's going to be snake bitten by this hammie issue. Time for Herm to really get to work.

As an aside, I was glad Ozzie mixed up the order and let JD hit 3rd. At this point, though, I really would just prefer it go Iguchi-Dye-Thome if he's in there-Konerko-Crede against LHs and AJ against RHs-Crede or Pierzynski-Anderson-Mackowiak-Uribe.

Older?
I thought he was a kid.

by the wolf on Aug 31, 2006 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

To some of us
Let the kid rest - we held up pretty well with him rehabbing, and it puts Gloadie in the lineup.  (Though do not mistake me - I wouldn't swap the 2 outright, but under the injury circumstance...)

Tigers slipping...
Also, the Tigers are no longer the best team (winning %-wise) in baseball, although I'm loathe to let any National League team have that recognition.

Also, when did Rocco Baldelli become Rob Mackowiak in CF?

i only can comment on that last hit
i don't think that was his fault. that was a funny looking ball thome hit at him.

by larry on Aug 30, 2006 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The last one was tough.
From the replay on the jumbotron at the game, I just know I would have been upset with BA if he didn't come up with it. The one earlier, on BA's shot to center, was horrific.

Update from Mark Gonzales:
"But Guillen said after the game Thome tweaked his leg and would be held out of Thursday afternoon's series finale as a precautionary measure. Thome said he expects to play Friday."

that's nice
but it looks like they thought he was ready tonight and he obviously wasn't. we need him for the playoff push but i'd be very cautious with him.

Agreed. Not to take the final game of the
TB series or the series at KC lightly, but I would much rather have Big Jim ready for Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, and Minnesota down to the wire.

JD Nickname
I suggested "The Assassin" a while back, but it didn't catch on.

by Sox Machine on Aug 30, 2006 11:55 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

My favorite thus far
Andd, yes, any Disney nickname is 60% too gay for baseball.

Except for Mike Piazza.

by winningugly on Aug 31, 2006 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

do we really need anything more than JD?
lawrence taylor seemed pretty fine with his initials.

by larry on Aug 31, 2006 12:22 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but...
People also call LaDainian Tomlinson "LT."  It's the lazy way out, it can be usurped by somebody more talented, and says nothing about the player except that his first name starts with "J", and his last name starts with "D".

Remember when Hawk came up with nicknames instead of catch phrases?

To think not that long ago he was known as ''jermaine dead.''

by QWERTwithaY on Aug 31, 2006 12:53 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

JD nickname
I've called him Scarface ever since early last year....just seemed obvious to me between the noticeable scar he's got on his face and the fact he's a cold blooded killer under pressure.

by whitesoxwin101 on Aug 31, 2006 1:07 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

he's pretty self-effacing
Maybe he doesn't want to call attention to the scar.

Why not just "Scar" like the bad guy in the Lion King?  Or is Disney too gay?

What am I talking about, of course Disney's too gay.

Dye Hard the Hunter
Jermaine is having one of those special years needless to say.  That phrase about doing things that do not necessarily show up in the box score is exactly what he has been doing this year.  Of course, the SBs from last night actually do show, but they do not tell the whole story in terms of their timing.  His arm in right field is still a deterrent and certainly does fit into that category.  I saw where Zobrist claims he did scrape 2nd base coming back around, but admits he had to hit it more deliberately in order to avoid there being a question from the umpire.  We'll take it no matter what.

Number crunching on Dye
I did some research, and here are Jermaine's numbers since the point where he bottomed out on May 12 2005.

G   234
AB  859
R   150
H   269
HR   65
RBI 179
SB   18
AVG .313
OBP .377
SLG .604
POS .981

This averages out to 104 runs, 186 hits, 45 HR, 124 RBI and 12 SB over a 162-game average.  Pretty darn impressive.  I doubt there are but a few players in the league that can match this.

Off Topic But . . .
Jimbo's is closing?!?  I always preferred going to china town before or after the game (it's what I used to do with my dad), but this sucks.  In fact, this strikes me as the kind of thing that brings a near-century of karmic retribution down on a team.  Any ideas how to save it?

Poor Batgirl.
I wonder how she'll feel when Detroit wins the Wild Card?

"The point is, Batgirl's eyes are burning and her soul is slowly dying, and, my dear Twins, it's your f@#$&*$ fault. If you close your eyes and listen, that isn't the wind you hear, but Batgirl's cries rending the sky asunder. She gives and she gives, and what does she get back? Bup-$%&#@?#-kiss.

Oh, Twins, I don't know why you treat me so bad--think of all the things we could have had.

You ass-weasels."

there's always something corny like Dyenamite
or Dyeno, or JVP. I also happen to like Jermainguy - yeah I kinda lifted that one. Trouble wih Dye is he's so under the radar its hard to give him a nick name.
The B2 (Stealth Bomber)?

The game ending DP was called because the ump ruled he made a second gesture towards third and needed yet another retag. He had gone past, tagged the bag again but made a subtle yet meaningful gesture towards third requiring another tag in the umps opinion.

I can't remember the last time an appeal worked much less to end a game.

I think his personality screams, or perhaps whispers, that he shouldn't have a nickname.

The Quiet Man for example. He walks softly and carries a big stick - but how do you translate that into a nickname? The guy that once described was nicknamed TR. Seems to me that justifies JD.

lineup for today
no surprises.

Today's Lineup

Pods, LF; Iguchi, 2B; Dye, RF; PK, DH; AJ, C; Crede, 3B; Gload, 1B; Uribe, SS; BA, CF.  Vazquez on the mound.

by larry on Aug 31, 2006 12:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I, for one, am appaled
that Scott Podsednik is leading off. I know Gload was going to play 1B with Thome out, but Rob Mackowiak, who Ozzie is so desperate to get playing time in CF, would make a fine LF and even leadoff man for a day.

Pods and Sept call ups
After last nights embarrassment that was Podsednik's feeble at bats, I wonder how long Guillen can rationalize playing him. Mack in LF and leading off has to be considered. The Sox improve in two ways. No Pods and no Mack in CF.

Any word on Sept call ups?
