Joe Crede signs a 1 year, $4.94 million deal

[whitesox.com]

Joe Crede and the White Sox avoided arbitration for a second straight year by agreeing to a one-year, $4.94 million deal Tuesday. The third baseman will earn $2 million more than last season, factoring in his base salary of $2.675 million plus incentives. ... The White Sox signed their last arbitration-eligible player and have not gone to arbitration since 2001 with then-closer Keith Foulke.
$1.3 million lower than what Cheat estimated. Hot dogs for everyone Kenny?

About what one would expect.
I'm a bit surprised they didn't end up in arbitration.

you don't go to arbitration
with players you respect. not the nicest of processes. plus, along with the aspect of uncertainty, any money saved by the sox/gained by the player is somewhat mitigated by the cost of the process. the two sides certainly weren't so far apart in their valuation so as to require a third party to figure it out.

I guess I was just surprised
That Boras didn't drag the Sox through the wringer.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 16, 2007 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

they do?
i would guess that's not always the case. would stephen drew have sat out a year with a different agent? seems unlikely. boras is strong enough a personality to tell certain clients exactly what to do.

by spengler on Jan 16, 2007 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

exceptions to every rule, i'm sure
you think joe crede is a pushover? if you're a weak person (i don't mean that in a negative way), you often look for a strong personality to guide you. however, by the time you're 28, you shouldn't be looking for hand-holding from your agent. everyone knows what boras' MO - clients included. if you tell him to be aggressive, he's going to be aggressive. he probably goes further than most agents would but clients know this when they hire him or give him directions. but if you tell your agent to get a deal done, a deal will get done. you don't piss off your clients.

by larry on Jan 16, 2007 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

just to add on
boras has acquired a rather mean reputation. but this reputation is based on a rather small percentage of his negotiations. i find it rather amusing that people - including quite a lot of people on here and other sox sites - take him as some sort of bogeyman and are scared off simply by the mention of his name, "agent," and a player in the same sentence. there have been quite a few negotiations that have gone smoothly; of course, smooth negotiations don't make good copy in the sports press - and boras doesn't tout these negotiations either. he can play the hard man very well but he's no one trick pony. he wouldn't have all these clients if he wasn't responsive to their desires. and lots of players don't want their names dragged through the headlines.

by larry on Jan 16, 2007 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

It's not so much Boras
As it is Boras and the White Sox.  Kenny Williams has basically said that he won't negotiate with Scott Boras clients.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 16, 2007 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

which is the stupidest, most impulsive thing
he's ever said. he's been back-tracking from that one for a few years now. people say stupid shit all the time during/after heated negotiations.

yeah, they have a cold relationship (to say the least). i don't buy for a second, though, that the sox won't deal with him if they feel it's in their best interest. jerry isn't a dope - and neither is KW.

by larry on Jan 16, 2007 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

I think...
The stupidest, most impulsive thing Kenny's ever said is when he said that the team "won't miss" Frank Thomas.  That was tough for me to swallow.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 16, 2007 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

same sort of situation
bitter negotiations and tough decisions were made. both sides then said things they shouldn't have. of course, KW was pretty much right - but still a stupid and impulsive thing to say in public. it's not like the man doesn't have a history of this sort of stuff. i could make at least a top five list of really stupid things KW has said to the media - stuff that i doubt any other GM would even seriously consider saying.

I'll just say
That I'm a Frank fan and leave it at that.  The way that whole thing went almost made me stop being a Sox fan.

Does
this mean an extension is more likely?

by Option27 @ South Side Sox on Jan 16, 2007 12:52 PM CST reply actions

My guess
Is no.  I'd be willing to bet serious money that Joe Crede will not be on the White Sox in 2009, and probably won't be on the 2008 team.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 16, 2007 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed
Although he is currently my favorite player on the White Sox, and everyone's mancrush, Crede has two huge question marks in his back and Scott Boras.  It turns out that one is breakable and the other is not.  With that said, if Fields keeps developing, I think he's our future 3rd baseman, for better or worse.
Go Badgers!

by shaftr on Jan 16, 2007 1:34 PM CST up reply actions

I'm excited about Fields.
I don't know why so many Sox fans don't want to see Fields play.  Crede has no future with this team.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jan 16, 2007 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

Your Future White Sox
No extensions, both sides are just squeezing what they can before he goes FA.  Crede wouldn't sign an extension for a penny less that $10mm/yr for 5 years, and no way Sox would commit to that.

I'm getting resigned to the fact that we'll barely recognize the Sox in 2008.  You can't lock '05 in amber, hope it all works.  At least KW seems to have a plan, which look absolutely brilliant when you contrast it with what's happening on the other side of town.

by ChicagoPete on Jan 16, 2007 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

No
As previously mentioned the Sox dont like to go to arbitration. Crede avoided it last year also.

by Tdogg on Jan 16, 2007 12:56 PM CST reply actions

Boys,
we need a right-handed hitting outfielder, who can play center-field some, and ideally, has some or a lot of upside....at minimum, SOMETHING....this seems dead right now....

by dantesox on Jan 16, 2007 2:55 PM CST reply actions

Crede FA
Hey, I know that the Payroll info the Cheat gathered says that Crede will be a FA after the 2008 season, but pretty much everyone else is reporting it like he'll be a FA after the 2007 season.

So, which is correct?

by Tavarin on Jan 16, 2007 3:01 PM CST reply actions

After 2008.
This is Crede's second arb-eligible season.

Obama's just filed for free agency
...and a lot of money will be thrown at him to lure him away from Chicago.

SS/3B
Personally I would like to see them 86 Uribe and move Shields over to short and see if he can learn the new position. Cintron is a solid backup if that isn't working and can play everyday. Uribe was pathetic last year and basically maintained his status quo numbers with a few great defensive plays. Heck the Sox should trade Uribe for Omar Vizquel. They would get the great defense and a solid offensive output both with the bat and in the on-base percentage. And then do what they can to trade Anderson to bring a solid CF to town, such as Andruw Jones. That would lock up the position players for the next few years and really put the White Sox back in the driver's seat of contention.

Mr Sabean
shouldn't you be negotiating a deal with Barry?

I would have to agree...
Even though Mike Gonzalez's numbers are absolutely filthy, he is still a setup man/closer that is only going to pitch 50-60 innings a season.  Plus, the Pirates seemed to have injury concerns about him.  Getting a 27 year old, 30+ HR, .900+ OPS, first baseman for him is pretty solid.

The trade looks a little better for the Braves now
Lillibridge looks like a good replacement for Renteria in 2009 or 2010.
