Around SBN: Ohio State And Florida Target 2013 Receiver Recruits

Who said it?

"Our thought process for the past two years has been to stockpile as many young pitchers as we can, so you don't have to go into the free agent market and do desperate things. It's been proven again and again you can be slaughtered there, where all the pitchers are over-priced. Plus, our payroll simply couldn't go any higher than it was."
The answer may surprise you.

The last sentence
and comment from Cheat are good clues.  Have to give Cashman credit for executing his plan very well.  Hughes, Sanchez, Chamberlain, Betances, Clippard...they are stocked with top pitching prospects going into this season.

Not a surprise
given the HUGE mistakes too numerous to mention that Cashaman has decided to avoid this winter.  I hope KW stays with the Sox and doesn't go to NY to spread more fiscal responsibility.

now
that the Tampa contingent is no longer running the show in NY, Cashman is making alot of good moves.

Rocco vs Crawford
I was going to post this in the Rocco diary, but for some reason the comment box wouldn't show up for me.  Anyways, their ZIPS projections.  Everything here leans towards Rocco, except for the # of games.

i believe all the blogs in the SB nation prevent commenting on stuff over a week old; something about preventing spam posts.

In other news
your (hey, I now live in Orlando) local columnists are making us look like stump jumpers once again.  Paul Ladewski (Daily Southdowner?)has gone on record saying he is withholding voting Gwynn/Ripken to the HOF on the 1st ballot because he's not sure if they used steroids.  Who is this idiot?  I've seen Gwynn up close and personal - Krispy Kremes, maybe, but definitely NOT 'roids.

And who was the guy who didn't list Jeter on the MVP ballot and put AJ on it?  Cowley?  Knuckleheads.

by winningugly on Jan 8, 2007 1:59 PM CST reply actions

I agree, WU
but I wonder what his real agenda was. Maybe he just didn't want Gwynn and Ripken to be honored in a way that Gehrig and Ruth weren't -- unanimously.

Take a closer look at the piece and he even says so in a round about way towards the end of the article.

by james@lifeinthecell on Jan 8, 2007 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

so because a bunch of dolts
in the past had an anti-yankee bias or didn't like that gehrig got a special vote, two more of the game's greatest players won't receive an honor they richly deserve? makes perfect sense. there's always some putz out there who wants to make a statement. if you believe a guy should be in the hall, you vote for him. if you don't, you don't. these machinations to ensure that no one is ever elected unanimously are absurd. both are obvious hall of famers. anyone who argues - or votes - otherwise is an idiot.

by larry on Jan 8, 2007 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

It is absurd
and it smears the whole integrity of the voting process.

Will he abstain from voting until all Steroid Era players have lost eligibility? He'll probably be dead by then.

And it's a waste of a ballot for other worthy candidates such as Jack Morris and Andre Dawson.

by james@lifeinthecell on Jan 8, 2007 3:51 PM CST up reply actions

i remember
how seaver did not receive a unanimous vote. the justification from at least two of those who didn't vote for him? pete rose wasn't on the ballot. yeah, that has a hell of a lot to do with seaver. bunch of power-trippers.

by larry on Jan 8, 2007 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

how about this?
If there's such a thing as the Steroid Era, shouldn't there be a Corked Bat Era, too? Anyone playing from the late '70s to the late '90s would be suspect then. Can Ladewski take back his old ballots for suspicion of cheating then?

by james@lifeinthecell on Jan 8, 2007 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

larry, it's hard to believe
but I was thinking of the word "putz" and then read your feedback.  God save me from thinking like a lawyer...

let's see
i used: dolt, putz, and idiot. i figured that pretty much covered the field.

The Yankees crying poor?
are you kidding me?  cashman deserves credit for saying this?  the yankees are the ones who inflated the market price in the first place.  now they're whining? wow, they must think we're a bunch of idiots.  just because they're geriatric starting lineup failed and now they have to re-build, they think they can pass off an excuse of inflated market on fans?

Off Topic - Happy Birthday King
Birthday wishes to the late great Elvis Presley, who would have turned 72 today.

Looking to celebrate? Rent "Bubba Ho-tep" tonight. That is one freaky flick. Imagine Elvis (should he have lived) in a rest home battling a mummy with another resident, black gentleman who believes he is JFK. Good stuff.

TCB baby!
