White Sox sign Linebrink, release Cintron / Podsednik, add seven scouts

[whitesox.com]:

The Chicago White Sox have finalized their amateur scouting staff for 2008, adding two regional crosscheckers and five area scouts. The moves were announced this afternoon by Doug Laumann, White Sox director of amateur scouting. Nick Hostetler is the White Sox new east coast crosschecker, while Derek Valenzuela, formerly a professional scout with the organization, takes over as the west coast crosschecker. Mike Baker (Southern California), Kevin Burrell (Georgia and South Carolina), Jeff McKay (Pacific Northwest), Joe Siers (North Florida) and Gary Woods (Southern California) have joined the Sox as area scouts. In addition, Joe Butler has been added to the White Sox professional scouting staff after covering Southern California and serving as a special assignment amateur scout. Ed Pebley and Nathan Durst remain in their roles as national crosscheckers.

[whitesox.com]:

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a four-year, $19-million contract with free-agent right-handed reliever Scott Linebrink and have requested waivers on infielder Alex Cintron and outfielder Scott Podsednik for the purpose of granting their unconditional releases. Under terms of the deal Linebrink will receive $4 million in 2008, $4.5 million in 2009, $5 million in 2010 and $5.5 million in 2011. ... With the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.

Huge deal about to go down?
http://www.startribune.com/blogs/neal/?p=276

In addition to Garza, the Twins would send Tampa Bay shortstop Jason Bartlett and reliever Juan Rincon for Young, shortstop Brendan Harris and outfielder Jason Pridie. Pridie was with the Twins during spring training of 2006 as a Rule 5 pick.

So basically it would be Garza, Rincon and Bartlett for Young, Harris and Pridie?  Damn.  I don't know what to think quite yet.  Harris gives away a lot of his offense on defense IF he's kept at shortstop, and losing Rincon is going to hurt them.  That strikes me as pretty fair for both teams, although I'm just taking a minor glance and I know nothing about Pridie.

The step down
from bartlett to Harris is a big one for the Twins. They have to be looking at putting him at 2B, right? He's not really a SS. That would have them signing an Eckstein/Izturis to play SS. I'm all for it...

Remove the SS from the deal, and I think the Twins win. Add the SS, and all I get is a big ? over my head.

He'll
play third and hit second in the lineup behind Casilla. They'll go out and get another ss.

I think you're right...
I have read that the Twins have been looking for a 2B for awhile.  Alexi Casilla may be no better than a utility infielder.

Twins
I think Twins win big time. Young has tremendous upside and from what I gathered on internet Jason Pridie is key for Twins. He will be their Center fielder for future. And many in Twins org didn't appreciate Garza's  attitude when he was sent down beginning of last year.

by indianguy30 on Nov 28, 2007 2:39 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

maybe they should have appreciated
that he was completely right in his feelings. they were warehousing him in order to save service time.

Young can't play
CF. Or at least the limited data (small sample size) by defensive metrics and his playing RF throughout his minor league career would indicate that to be the case. He only played CF last year because of injuries to Upton and Baldelli. I think they'll have Young and Cuddyer at the corners.

by bhoov on Nov 28, 2007 3:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

How'd he do last year?
Would they play him there until the other kid in the deal (Pridie) was ready?

Well
He was -15 by UZR and -10 by Fielding Bible in RIGHTFIELD last year. So the chances of him playing even an adequate CF are pretty much nil. With experience I'm sure he'll become an average to above average RF though. And with what he did in MLB at 20, I think he's gonna be a star.

play SS in the minors? Maybe they plan Harris at 2b and Casilla at SS?

by bhoov on Nov 28, 2007 2:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't think so...
But he did have a pretty bad year last year in both the minors and majors. His 2006 was excellent. He's the reason they got ride of their former 2B. He's supposed to be hot shizzle not only with the glove but with the bat.

True. It must be nice to have such expendable pieces like the Twins have in their organization. All the pieces we could offer up we need for our immediate future. (pitching)

Sigh...

Last year the Tigers and Indians reloaded. This year the Twins are reloading. The Royals are somewhat busy too...

Kenny had better stay by that danged phone. I want a deal done for an outfielder by the end of the week!

So, what....
you wanna give away Gio for a guy like Delmon? And Pirdie? He's no prize. And....Delmon was every bit the nuisance....AND MORE...than Garza, from what I hear.

by dantesox on Nov 28, 2007 2:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

In a heartbeat
I'd give away Gio for Delmon Young in a second. Sure, he might be a little crazy, but he has been consistenly good at every level. That's a no-brainer.

by BoKnows on Nov 28, 2007 3:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That
deal wasn't 1 for 1. I might do GIO FOR dELMON....PERHAPS. But add in Richar and one or two more....still look so good?

by dantesox on Nov 28, 2007 3:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Ah...
...I thought you were saying that Gio is more valuable than Young and that you wouldn't do that trade straight-up. I'd do Young for Gio, and Young for Gio and Richar. Tampa Bay's farm system is and has been loaded, so it's difficult to compare #1 prospects when the Ray's top 5 are probably all better than our top guy.

Baseball America ranked Young as the #3 prospect (behind Dice-K and Alex Gordon) in '07, #1 overall in '06, and #3 (behind Mauer and Hernandez) in '05. This guy could be a superstar, whereas Gio might become a nice #2, fringe #1 starter.

pridie, outside of a half season last year, looks like a fourth outfielder.

as for why, if you want to trade gio, i'm sure it could be done.

Precisely
We could... it'd just cost us our best pitching prospects that we probably need for the club's future. Poreda may be 2 years or more away. Gonzalez and Egbert aren't too far away and we need some rotation help -this- year.

Rotoworld seems to like the Linebrink signing...
White Sox signed RHP Scott Linebrink, who had been with the Brewers, to a four-year, $19 million contract.
Anyone expressing surprise over the kind of money Linebrink received just hasn't been paying attention. Danys Baez got a three-year, $19 million contract last year and wasn't any better of a bet. Linebrink has declined the last two years, but he's remained healthy and he still turns in scoreless innings most of the time. Even though he'll give up a bunch of homers at U.S. Cellular Field, he'll be a solid enough setup man for Bobby Jenks, at least through the first half of the deal.

by SSH2005 on Nov 28, 2007 3:07 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That is probably the best case scenario
That he is a reliable setup man for Jenks. We haven't had a reliable setup guy since Politte/Cotts in '05.

Only two things...
really bother me about this - (1) giving up the draft pick, even a second-rounder, and (2) making a four-year commitment.

I think chances are very low that Linebrink is still  an effective pitcher in 2010, which is about the time that they'll really need an effective relief pitcher.

Adding another reliever right now doesn't really do much, other than possibly spare us the sight of Dewon Day or Nick Masset for a while.

Some news from Larry's second team...
Athletics claimed first baseman Wes Bankston off waivers from the Royals.
Two rough years have taken a heavy toll on Bankston's status as a prospect, but he showed the ability to hit for average and power until a misguided position switch and injuries resulted in a lost 2006. He'll be well worth having stashed away in Triple-A.

Also, it looks like the Royals finalized their 2-year contract with a 2010 option for Yasuhiko Yabuta.

Amazing the
Indians left Brian Barton unprotected. What were they thinking. 25 y.o. with an .856 AA OPS after a >.900 OPS the year before. They didn't have a spot for him! With the uproar caused by not adding Fernando hernandez imagine if we did that! And, as shown with the recent look at their farm system it's not like they're loaded these days. And without Cintron, aren't we below 40?

by bhoov on Nov 28, 2007 5:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Nope.
Linebrink took Cintron's spot.

Barton's better than a few players currently on the Sox roster, though I don't imagine he'd make it to the Sox to pick up.

We replaced the useless backup IFer
with a mildly useful middle reliever who is signed for far too long. Just for good measure the Sox threw in some no-trade protection as well... And a pony. Linebrink loves ponies.

they can trade him to another team prior
to the draft. if i understand my rules correctly, the team that acquires him can add him to their 40 man roster. considering he's not on their roster, it wouldn't take much to procure him, should a team that picks later wish to make sure they grab him - and without the strict rules that come with being a rule 5 draftee.

BP on the garland/cabrera deal
and other sox transaction ruminations from christina.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6956

Oops. In itself, the deal with the Angels isn't a bad thing, it's just that it doesn't fit in very well with the initial decision to keep Juan Uribe for $4.5 million, and there's the irony that the exchange might have also encouraged the Halos to upgrade on Gary Matthews Jr. and go get the center fielder Kenny Williams so clearly wanted for his own club.

Lamenting the money that's now effectively wasted on Uribe aside, though, as a direct one-for-one, this isn't a bad trade for the Sox, since it's one year of Cabrera for one of Garland. Cabrera's an obvious offensive upgrade, and probably a defensive one as well, and it will be interesting to see if he's the sort of hitter who can exploit the Cell's short corners. A lot of his doubles in Angel Stadium were hit into the left field corner; if he maintains that, he should deliver some extra souvenirs.

As far as the rotation, here again, I think Williams drew a reasonable conclusion--that Jon Garland isn't going to be the difference between fielding a competitive club. They're still leading off with Mark Buehrle and Javier Vazquez. Nobody's willing to take a chance on Jose Contreras, so the challenge is to fix him, again, and if anybody has experience there, it's the Sox and pitching coach Don Cooper, the folks who turned the big Cuban around in the first place. They're left hoping that John Danks and Gavin Floyd pan out, fast, but you can also invest some hope that maybe next spring is the one where Charlie Haeger starts channeling Charlie Hough, or that very different prospects like Gio Gonzalez, Jack Egbert, and/or Lance Broadway pan out. Obviously, the Sox could use a veteran journeyman to bring in as insurance against too many kids and Contreras falling victim to an uncorrectable error. There's still enough to choose from in that bin, whether it's filler like Livan Hernandez or Kyle Lohse, or guys bouncing back from injury (Kris Benson, Jason Jennings, maybe even a return engagement with Bartolo Colon). The worst choices would involve names like 'Trachsel' or Weaver the Elder, but it shouldn't come to that.

So the real problem is that the team doesn't have a center fielder, but at least it now has a shortstop. I wouldn't bang on Kenny Williams too much as far as his having a march stolen on him by Tony Reagins and the Angels. If there's one area of the market that still has good stock, it's center field, and it doesn't have to involve a monster deal with Aaron Rowand. Andruw Jones or Mike Cameron would fill the bill, especially if the money was right. If Williams decides to play for lower stakes I think the irony of seeing Corey Patterson on the South Side would be delicious; it might even finally engender some real hatred for the Sox among Cubs fans, finally leading to some two-way animosity in town.

The problem is that if the Sox see themselves as having a dividend because they didn't get Hunter, spending it on Linebrink's exactly where you don't want to go. While he hasn't gone pumpkin and still should have value, he's just not the set-up star from San Diego from three or four years ago, and taking him out of Petco, and then putting him into the tougher league in a tougher park? That's a formula for bitter disappointment. While the desire to fix the club's pen is appropriate, and Linebrink should still be at least an adequate set-up man for Bobby Jenks, this is a pretty big commitment to a guy who's already lost something, and who seems likely to lose still more to a change in competitive environments from one that could forgive the occasional mistake to one that usually doesn't.

who is lucal harrell and where did he come from?

And why is it necessary we have 4 catchers on the 40 man?

MLBtraderumors.com says we are interested...
in Kosuke Fukudome?

Wow, I'm excited now...

by SSH2005 on Nov 28, 2007 7:45 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well...
With Torii and the Legend outta the picture... that leaves Cameron, Jones, and Fukodome.

Seems to me like Fukodome would be higher on KW's list than either of those two.

I still don't think that Rowand...
is entirely out of the picture yet.  Among CF'ers, here are a few of the targets...

Aaron Rowand
Kosuke Fukudome
Coco Crisp
Willy Taveras

Andruw Jones is already out of the picture because of his agent.  But if you listen to "Williams conf. call on Linebrink" at WhiteSox.com, Kenny makes it sound like he is going to acquire at least one outfielder.  But he said that instead of acquiring a CF'er, they could acquire a LF'er and go with Owens, Anderson, or Sweeney in CF.  The problem with this plan is that there aren't really any quality free agent corner outfielders. Kenny would have to trade for a corner outfielder to get a good one.

Ahh I gotcha.
I was just talking about FA's. But yeah, I guess Taveras and Crisp are options. I'd much rather have a guy I've never seen play than Crisp. Taveras is another story.

by Shoeless In SC on Nov 28, 2007 7:57 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What's the Story?
That Crisp is better then Taveras?
Taveras: 12 WS
Crisp:   16 WS

And yes, Taveras did have better raw offensive numbers, but only 6 more points (89/83) in OPS+ last year.  And I'd bet that Crisp can get back to his amazing Cleveland numbers (110/117 OPS+ '04/'05) if he gets out of Boston.  Well, maybe not all the way, but get back over league average hitting.

So, if Crisp can get his offense back to respectability, he's leaps and bounds better then Taveras.  Instead of slightly better.

by coffeepac on Nov 28, 2007 10:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know
if you mean Crisp or Taveras so...

Crisp:  77 OPS+, 10 WS
Taveras:  74 OPS+, 13 WS

What happened to Willy's Defense last year?  'cause he lost a share and hit like crazy in '07.

Also, Taveras is a terrible name to type too many times.  I keep sounding it out in my head as 'tah-ver-ass' to get the spelling right.  I have now said 'ass' to my self at least 45 times in the past 10 minutes.

Here...

Fukudome should make at least $30MM over three years in the United States.  The Rangers, Mets, Cubs, Giants, White Sox, and Padres may all have interest.

MLBTR
It looks like he pulled this out of thin air.  I haven't seen a single article indicating that White Sox may be interested in Fuku, and he doesn't link to any.

I'd say helps
The Minnesota Twins announced Wednesday that they have acquired outfielders Delmon Young and Jason Pridie along with infielder Brendan Harris from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for pitchers Matt Garza, Eduardo Morlan and infielder Jason Bartlett.

so they replaced rincon with morlan

by The Wizard on Nov 28, 2007 9:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

interesting deal
same reaction as before. i don't know what the injury on rincon is; he did sort of stink this year so maybe that explains it. setting aside injury concerns, keeping rincon would help the twins be better next year.

it makes me wonder what, if any, knock on effects this will have on potential santana deals. it's tough and probably misleading to score trades and transactions individually but this looks fairly even.

does anyone here think
the sox could have made a better offer?

by Jbasic89 on Nov 28, 2007 9:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm..
I'm not sure Danks is better than Garza. I am inclined to believe Garza is the better pitcher. I know his numbers are better, but he just seems like he is more polished.

The Rays were looking for an MLB ready starter, and aside from Danks, I dunno who the Sox could've sent. Vazquez is too old. Buehrle locked up. It would've cost probably Gio or Egbert + Danks and Uribe.

Anderson, Dony Lucy, and Andy Gonzalez would have been enough

Morlan
was Valido's teammate in HS. 99/20 K/BB ratio last year in 70 innings. I wouldn't be surprised to see TB send him back to the rotation next year.

Uhm... yeah
Helps the Twins out big time.

They can afford to send off Garza. I know the Rays need pitching but they are really sending off some studs here.

Looks like the Twinkies aren't going to lay down and die next year. The AL Central is going to be really tough for the Sox next year, and I don't see this trade as any small ripple.

I mean the Twin's rotation next year is going to be:

Johan
Liriano
Bonser
Slowey
Baker

...

Tell me that isn't sick.

yea but
chances are johan will be traded n they were even talking about trading nathan as well...

by Jbasic89 on Nov 28, 2007 9:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The thing is...
The Twins are moving away from Piranhas (Tyner, Bartlett, Punto) and acquiring some power with Harris, Young, and now Buscher will be starting at 3B (a SC alum).

Their lineup is much improved and so far their rotation hasn't really taken a hit. Liriano can be a whole run worse next year (than he was a year ago) and be better than Garza.

"God knows I gave my best in baseball at all times and no man on earth can truthfully judge me otherwise."

by Shoeless In SC on Nov 28, 2007 9:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That
is by no stretch of the imagination a great rotation....are you looking at what I'm looking at? Even with Santana. And he might not be there. That's three guys with some promise and a guy off of Tommy John. Their offense is certainly improved. Also, I think Harris plays third and hits second behind Casilla, who leads off. Punto is insurance at short if they can't get anyone better.

by dantesox on Nov 28, 2007 9:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously...
Any of those 3 (Bonser, Slowey, Baker) are better than Danks and whomever we can throw out there next year. Though Bonser got rocked a little bit he looked very impressive in a lot of his outtings... even dominant. He has great stuff and averages over a K per inning.

Tigers and Indians better watch out.
