Sox not particularly high on Lastings Milledge?
... The White Sox are open to dealing Contreras, who has two years and $20 million left on his contract, and Garland, who has one year and $12 million. The Mets were intrigued by Contreras in the past, as they think the presence of Orlando Hernandez could help El Duque's fellow Cuban native. In return for starting pitchers, the White Sox are looking for outfield bats, bullpen arms and possibly a shortstop, as Juan Uribe is a potential free agent. They are not particularly high on Milledge, a person familiar with the team's thinking said.

San Diego is looking for a centerfielder. Let's see what the Padres' Scott Merkin says.
It's no secret the Padres will, first and foremost, according to general manager Kevin Towers, be looking for a bat during the offseason to upgrade an offense that was among the worst in baseball last season. That bat, likely an outfielder, could be any number of players. The team is interested in Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome, who can sign with any Major League team. Fukudome, a left-handed batter, is a doubles machine, which could play well at PETCO Park. He has been compared to Todd Helton for his approach to hitting. And he's a plus defender, though I'm not sure if he would be a fit in center field. Remember, the Padres don't need a bopper (although that wouldn't hurt) as much as they need a productive bat, someone with patience and the ability to drive in runs in critical situations. Geoff Jenkins, whose option was declined by the Brewers, could be a possibility. He's a left-handed hitter as well. Here's another name I like: Brian Anderson of the White Sox. He hasn't panned out in Chicago but he's a center fielder and a very good defensive player with a lot of offensive upside.

The White Sox aren't high on Milledge...
I guess a 22 year old center fielder who just posted a .272/.341/.446/.787 line wouldn't appeal to me either. I'd rather see Jerry Owens out there cuz he has more SPEED!!1!
Seriously, what the f*ck is wrong with our organization? Can we clean house already?

Hey I was going to post that...
At this point, I don't have much hope that the Sox talent evaluation is going improve until there is a new GM.

Off - topic (OK, it was a slow work day)
"The Spygate thing has diminished what they've accomplished. You would hate to have that attached to your accomplishments. They've got it," Shula told the Daily News yesterday. "Belichick was fined $500,000, the team was fined $250,00 and they lost a first-round draft choice. That tells you the seriousness or significance of what they found.
"I guess you got the same thing as putting an asterisk by Barry Bonds' home run record. I guess it will be noted that the Patriots were fined and a No.1 draft choice was taken away during that year of accomplishment. The sad thing is Tom Brady looks so good, it doesn't look like he needs any help."
Told that he might get support in his desire to have an asterisk placed next to New England's potential perfect season, Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history, said, "I don't know how people can't agree with that."
The Patriots were caught on the sidelines videotaping the Jets' defensive signals in the first half of the opening game of this season. They were forced to turn over tapes of all their previous spying to two league senior vice presidents in Foxborough in September. After they were viewed, commissioner Roger Goodell surprisingly ordered the tapes destroyed.
"You have to acknowledge what they accomplished, but I don't know how you disregard Spygate," Shula said. "It's there. It happened. You don't know what was on those tapes and how much it helped. I think the commissioner just wanted it to go away."

Yet still...
And I'm sure Shula is all about the integrity of the game, and the integrity alone. That's why he and the rest of the retired perfect Dolphins stand on the sidelines in their schaudenfreud glory, waiting for undefeated teams to fall. What an ass.

joe must be joking...
Beinfest was coy about other teams' interest in Cabrera.
"He's a good player, a really good player,'' Beinfest said with a smile. "We get asked about a lot of our players.
"We are not going to comment on specific players or trade rumors. But he's an awfully good player, that's for sure.'' Several teams are interested in Cabrera, but the Chicago White Sox might engage in the most serious trade discussions. He is close friends with his Venezuelan countryman, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who was a Marlins coach when Cabrera was a rookie.
The Marlins are shopping Cabrera because of his salary as well as their concerns about his weight and attitude. When the Marlins played an interleague series in Chicago in June, Guillen hosted Cabrera at his home and scolded the slugger about his weight.
The Yankees also are targeting Cabrera, along with Boston's Mike Lowell, as replacements for A-Rod if they don't re-sign him.
As late as October, the Marlins' front office was divided over the possibility of trading Cabrera. If the Marlins did deal him, it would be only for the right compensation.
Beinfest, echoing the sentiment of most teams, said he didn't expect the Marlins to make any trades this week. The GM meetings, which end Thursday, would be used to lay the groundwork for a deal that could fall into place by or at baseball's winter meetings the first week of December in Nashville.
The last time Florida traded a marquee player - Thanksgiving 2005 - they sent Josh Beckett and Lowell to the Red Sox in return for two top prospects: Hanley Ramirez, who won the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 2006, and Anibal Sanchez, who tossed a no-hitter that year. "When you trade really good players, you want really good players in return,'' Beinfest said. "The Red Sox's return was obviously excellent in that deal, as well. All you want is value. Whether you are taking back money or taking back inexpensive players , you want talent value. You want talent for talent."
