Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Be like Mark

Coop wants more first-pitch strikes and relying on his defense from Danks in order to cut down his walks:

"Pitching to contact early will cut down the walks. He can't fall behind anymore. There were times where he would get the first two outs, then throw a five-pitch walk. The deeper he pitches in games, the better chance he has and we have."

Q's ZiPs Projection
is too low.

As Dan himself noted, " ... ZiPS has no idea that Quentin was playing throw a shoulder problem."

I believe he will end up closer to the "optimistic" projection of .272/.372/.482 with 19 HRs.

what I am suggsting
is that Sox(Kenny) have a habit of liking washed out top prospects and getting them at some point(remember how and when Cintron was acquired). cintron and terrero
we acqured cintron to be a backup, and we PICKED UP terrero to possibly be back up with no guarantee to make the team.  cintron was past the point of being considered a bust, so we traded a worthless jeff bajenaru(hows he doing for the dbacks?) and got terrero for free i believe. carlos quentins acquisition is a completely different scenario.

Off topic....
but...why do I have this admittedly irrational good feeling about Floyd and Danks this year?  Secondly, where from here? Looks like Rowand and Alexi Ramirez plus an arm from a Crede trade....and that'll pretty much be it....and that's just fine with me....I think we'll be competitive with a slight chance to surprise....let's keep slowly funneling in the kids (Gio, Sweeney, Broadway....etc...even Anderson if still here) and investing and upgrading scouting, development in the farm...that's all.

No white flag trade
I agree with dantesox -  the team won't win but if the pitching is decent we could hang in there for awhile - look what happened to the Sox when they started tearing about the team to get youth with the white flag trade.  Took years to recover from it and for the fans to forgive them. There instead of waiting until it was too late like they may have done now, they did it early.

Fukudome may choose team tomorrow...
Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer wrote:
The agent for Japanese free agent Kosuke Fukudome said today he doesn't expect to hear from his client about his intentions to play in the U.S. in 2008 until sometime after 10 p.m. (CST) tonight and doesn't plan to contact the Cubs or any other stateside suitor until Tuesday, regardless of Fukudome's decision.

But once Fukudome makes the anticipated announcement that he's coming to the U.S. a deal could get done within a day of the announcement, agent Joe Urbon said.

Multiple media outlets on both sides of the Pacific have reported that Fukudome already had decided to come to the U.S., but Urbon said late this afternoon - about 8 a.m. Tuesday for Fukudome -- his client has not yet contacted him. And even after that were to happen, the outfielder is expected to spend much of tonight (Tuesday morning in Japan) meeting face-to-face with the three Japanese teams that had expressed interest.

That means no official announcement from the Fukudome camp is possible until sometime Tuesday (CST), at which time a deal could come together quickly for Fukudome's top-choice U.S. team.

Since the Rangers signed Milton Bradley, it sounds like they may be out of the running on Fukudome.  It sounds like it is mainly the Cubs, Padres, and White Sox in that order.  The Padres probably have increased interest in both Fukudome and Rowand now that they have lost Milton Bradley to the Rangers.

but I think it's just as likely (if not more so) that Rowand or Hunter's contracts end up being busts. C'est la guerre. I'm actually hoping that the Sox refrain from signing Fukudome or Rowand. For comparison
Last year our LFers hit .256/.332/.399/.731. Of course once Mack was traded it was sig. worse than that. So .249/.342/.428/.770 would be a very nice upgrade. The AL average for LF is .275 .335 .426.

Amazingly our CFers posted an incredibly putrid .247/.308/.320/.628 line. Average for CF is .272 .340 .414 .754. An average everyday CF would probably be a 5 win upgrade (Mike Cameron are you out there?)!

3B? .221/.275/.367/.642 (remember Crede sucked before going under the knife and when Fields went to LF gonzalez and Cintron replaced him). Still, that is amazingly bad. Average is .266 .334 .427 .761 (of course that includes A-rod).

Brewers' reliever Matt Wise to be non-tendered?
Salomon Torres will report to the Brewers instead of retiring and Eric Gagne was given #38 which was Wise's number.  They still need to get rid of a player to make room for Gagne because they currently have 41 players on their roster.

Also, it sounds like they dumped Kevin Mench because they want to trade for a 3B and move Ryan Braun to LF.  My predicted trade of Crede to the Brewers for Matt Wise sounds somewhat possible now.

Wise is a solid reliever...
My Crede for Wise trade makes sense for both teams.  We need another reliever to improve our bullpen and the Brewers need a 3B so they can move Ryan Braun to LF now that both Geoff Jenkins and Kevin Mench are gone.  We would also be dumping some salary in the deal to throw at Fukudome or Rowand.

Fukudome's choice is down to 3 teams...
"Notebook: Three teams lead pursuit of Japanese OF Fukudome"
"All I know is it seems like it's coming down to two cities," said the general manager of one of them, San Diego's Kevin Towers, Monday afternoon. "And there's two teams in one of the cities."

That would be Chicago, where the Cubs are aggressively looking to add a left-handed bat in right field, and where the White Sox continue pushing to add an outfielder and bat after losing out on Torii Hunter (signed by the Angels as a free agent) and Miguel Cabrera (acquired by Detroit in a trade) this winter.

by SSH2005 on Dec 10, 2007 10:03 PM CST reply actions

For Fukodome
It's all gonna be about his defense.  Most projection systems seem to have him around a .350 OBP and a .450 SLG%.  If he's an average defender in CF, he'll certainly be worth the (approx) 3/$45 that he gets.  If, on the other hand, he can't hack it out in CF...  well then he's not a particularly special ballplayer -- probably a bit above average and while that still gets you a lot of money in this market, I don't think that's worth $15 million per season.

by CWSKeith on Dec 10, 2007 10:11 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed...
but if the White Sox didn't think that Fukudome could play CF well enough defensively, they would probably be focused on Rowand right now instead of Fukudome.  Although, I am assuming that White Sox scouts actually know what the hell they are doing which is probably foolish of me.

by SSH2005 on Dec 10, 2007 10:16 PM CST up reply actions

More on Fukudome...
On the South Side, where the White Sox right now have Carlos Quentin (acquired in a trade from Arizona) in left field and Jermaine Dye in right, he would be expected to play center.

"He's a great player," Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said in Nashville. "Some people say he's between Ichiro and one from the New York Yankees, (Hideki) Matsui. That's a pretty good combo."

The Padres are believed to be offering $36 million over three years, similar to the deal Kansas City bestowed on outfielder Jose Guillen. The Cubs are believed to be at four years and more than $40 million.

Unfortunately, no quotes on Kenny's likely lowball contract offer.  ; (

I don't understand the Cubs offer though -- Fukudome has supposedly stated that he only wants a 3-year deal.  Sounds like a 3-year, $39 million dollar deal would be good enough to nab him but who knows what Fukudome is thinking?

by The Deacon on Dec 11, 2007 7:36 AM CST up reply actions

I do...
Crede is a waste of $5 million dollars right now with the Sox current roster.  We can't even keep Crede at 3B and move Fields to LF now because Quentin has to play LF.  We would get a solid reliever in Wise and also get to dump Crede's salary.  Use the money saved on trading Crede to sign Fukudome or Rowand.  One could argue that Uribe helps the team now more than Crede at a similar cost since he can play SS, 2B, and 3B instead of just 3B.  I think it would be a trade that would make sense for both the White Sox and Brewers.

by SSH2005 on Dec 11, 2007 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

Fukudome
The Cubs have offered Kosuke Fukudome close to $50 million, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.
That deal would likely trump the Padres' initial offer, which is to be over $10 million per season for three years. The White Sox are also believed to be in the running for Fukudome, who announced Tuesday that he's leaving Japan for MLB.

I would take Cameron but I would rather have Fukudome or Rowand.

I don't love...
Patterson, but he's mediocre. I think because he's been a disappointment, he seems worse than mediocre, but if he can put up an OPS+ of 90 or so and play a decent center field for less than 5 million or so, that's acceptable.

i'd rather see
pablo ozuna play CF and enjoy myself laughing at how funny he looks out there than pay corey patterson 5 mil to play.

Oh, and...
as for Fukudome/Rowand, I wouldn't mind seeing them out there in 2008, but I wouldn't give either one of them more than a three-year deal. Since that means not signing them, I wouldn't sign them.

Lofton!
His little smile pissed me off.

You've got to remember, SSH
that since we have Owens in CF, that gives us 'a lot of flexibility.'

Also, Olney's a tool.

In other news...
David Segui says he got steroids from ex-Mets clubhouse attendant.

The Bears former Rams bust DT Jimmy Kennedy.  Kennedy was traded to Denver but was cut in training camp and he hasn't played this season.  Kennedy was the Rams' top draft pick (#12 overall in 2003). The Bears would have selected him if he were still on the board. Kennedy is already practicing with the Bears today.

By the way...
good job, The Cheat, for pushing the '86 White Sox into first place! I don't know how you're doing it, but keep it up!

Larry, you're a man in the know...
Isn't it the case that is the Sox decide to non-tender Crede, and another team signs him (which of course will most definitely occur), the Sox do not receive draft pick compensation? I may be wrong, but I can tell you know how these things work.

by HulkSmash on Dec 11, 2007 1:04 PM CST up reply actions

that's right
and i misread dante's question; i was referring to when a club must offer arbitration to a player to whom they've tendered. every player on the 40 who is not under contract must be tendered a contract by today.

I see, thanks
So good money on Crede being tendered then, I assume.

Non-Tender Deadline
[MLBTR]:
Midnight Wednesday marks baseball's non-tender deadline.  That's when teams must choose whether to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players.  If they don't offer a contract, the player is non-tendered and becomes a free agent.  While Kevin Mench and Matt Wise were technically designated for assignment, they'll soon be non-tendered.  I've added both to the free agent list and will continue to update it.

Here's a list of possible non-tenders.  Who do you think will be the best player to hit the free agent pool tomorrow?  Morgan Ensberg?  Joe Crede? Mark Prior?

Is it fair to assume Rowand is not worried
About the Mitchell report? Else wouldnt it be wise to sign something now? Or are there no official offers?
