No Fuku?
so says newsday's ken davidoff:
Kenny isn't discouraged though:
...When asked about Japanese star Kosuke Fukudome, Williams grinned and said: "No comment."
I just opened SSS in my browser and saw a thread with more than 200 comments. So, I used 2 quick quotes that probably have already been covered to start a new thread.
- Ozzie isn't worried about Toby's shoulder but Toby's weight, says Jose doesn't want to be embarrassed, and has a sure-fire plan for 2008: Things can't get worse. BTW, Ozzie thinks the Tigers got better after acquiring Miggy.
- Jim looks at the Cabrera & Willis to Detroit trade. Kevin Goldstein looks at the 6 players the Marlins got. Nate Silver looks at how the Cabrera trade impacts the AL Central.
- BTB on the Quentin-Carter trade.
- Phil Rogers ranks the Sox last in the AL Central.
- FJM on yesterday's Sox reverse. And some David Eckstein.
- The Brewers signed David Riske to a 3/13 deal (20 with incentives). And they were close to getting Joe Crede last night.
- More Hot Stove: The Rockies are interested in Iguchi and Julian Tavares. The Phillies are "more unlikely than likely" to sign Iguchi. The Brewers are also interested in Iguchi. -- No Scott Rolen to the Brewers? Maybe to the Angels that say they're not desperate for a 3rd baseman? -- The Dodgers asked about Bill Hall. -- Fukudome bidding to reach $40 million? Similar to Torii's deal? Boston is interested too? BTW, BP says "Fukudome is a solid OF who can play all 3 positions, is a plus defender even if his arm is affected by the elbow surgery, and is somewhere between Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui on the hitting side of things." -- Astros want C Nick Hundley from the Padres for Luke Scott. -- Rangers discussed Corey Patterson with Boras. Speaking of Boras, he wants a J.D.Drew-like deal for Andruw Jones from the Dodgers, who want to sign either Andruw Jones or Aaron Rowand.

Does any other team in mlb have as many ironclad rules as the CWS?
1)No Boras clients, ever
2)Never pay more than fair market value for a FA (ie, FMV as defined by Jerry Reinsdorf)
3)No contract longer than 3yrs for pitchers (er, except for Scott Linebrink)
4)No no-trade clauses (er, except for Scott Linebrink)
5)Only pay slot for draft picks (see Rule #1)
6)Never offer arbitration to departing FA's
7)Only fast guys bat leadoff
8)Only guys who can bunt can bat 2nd
9)Always steal 2B with 2 outs

Nope but
The Cabrera trade could accelerate talks involving Sox attempts to deal third baseman Joe Crede and perhaps take another shot at free-agent center fielder Aaron Rowand. Williams, however, remained reluctant to give a five-year contract to Rowand, who is entertaining an offer from Kansas City.

re
[mlb.com]:
With two outs, the Grays put the tying runs on base. Paige recalled a conversation he'd had a few years earlier with Grays star Josh Gibson, a teammate of Paige's at the time with the Pittsburgh Crawfords.
Paige called O'Neil to the mound.
"He said, 'You know what I'm fixin' to do?'" O'Neil recounted. "I said, 'Naw.' He said, 'I'm gonna walk Howard Easterling; I'm gonna walk Buck Leonard; I'm gonna pitch to Josh Gibson.'
"I said, 'Man, don't be facetious.' He said, 'That's what I'm gonna do.'"
Perhaps if this story had come from anybody else, it would be easily discounted as the tallest of tales, but how does anybody question O'Neil, a man who's watched more baseball games than any living person?
He was in the middle of this Paige moment to remember: Paige vs. Gibson, the "black Babe Ruth."
As Gibson came to the plate, Paige reminded him of that earlier conversation. Paige had told Gibson that he was the "best hitter in the world." Paige also said he was the "best pitcher in the world."
So the two best were now face to face. They had a championship at stake. Gibson was ready, and Paige had a point to prove.
"'Come on, Satchel, throw the ball,'" O'Neil, whose nickname was "Nancy," recalled Gibson saying.
And Paige's reply, O'Neil said, "'I'm gonna throw you some fastballs.'"
Paige did. He threw three of them at Gibson. Each harder than the one before it; each one a strike. Ballgame over.
Walking off the mound, Paige, who stood 6-foot-4, looked in O'Neil's eyes as if he were seven-feet tall.
"He said, 'You know what, Nancy, nobody hits Satchel's fastball,'" O'Neil recalled. "I said, 'I guess you're right.'"

melvin says no mas
But Brewers general manager Doug Melvin just said he isn't planning at this point to make an offer to Iguchi, a second baseman who would make the move to third base if he got the right offer. Iguchi has played only second base in his three years in the majors with the Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies.
"I didn't want to make an offer until we were serious about pursuing him," said Melvin, who is looking at third base options that might allow him to move Ryan Braun to left field.
"We prefer to find a true third baseman, if we could. If we don't, we may go back his way. I think we've got to exhaust our other efforts first.
"We'd have to feel we were shut out on every other opportunity for third base, and just have to feel comfortable with making the move with Ryan to the outfield."
In other words, Melvin is intrigued by Iguchi but not enough to jump after him right now. He apparently wants to see if an established third baseman can be had before going after a player who would convert to the position.

cabrera trade
But the deal hit a snag, sources say, when the Marlins insisted on including Willis in the package. The Marlins also wanted a catcher in return, something the Sox couldn't offer. While the Sox were waiting for a counteroffer, the Tigers reached a quick deal that's expected to become final today. Cabrera and Willis will go to the Tigers, and the Marlins will get prized left-hander Andrew Miller, center fielder Cameron Maybin, catcher Mike Rabelo and right-handers Burke Badenhop, Eulogio de la Cruz and Dallas Trahern.

Well...
Willis doesn't seem to have much trade value at this point. Isn't he a free agent after 2008, or am I wrong about that?
The Marlins save an estimated $20 million with this deal just for 2008, and that's a major concern for them.
Not that any of that makes this a good deal for the Marlins from a baseball perspective, but I was just throwing things out there.

The fact that we can even engage in a serious discussion comparing Jose to Dontrelle should tell you all you need to know about his value. Actually the fact that he was a throw in tells you everything you need to know about his value.
The salary is not all that relevant. Would you trade anything of value for Jose plus 3 million? Now taking a flier on one of them at 7 million? Actually I wouldn't even do that but I could understand if you did.

I think the tigers gave up exactly what he's worth (not much). I'm not criticizing the Tigers, simply addressing your question as to why they got so little for him.
In reference to his K rate I agree it's the same, but for some pitchers loss of command can be indicative of decline or injury as well. And if you look at his BB rate you'll see that's been increasing on a yearly basis.

i also took a look into willis' numbers last year
also, i read an article about how the marlins decided to change his delivery this year to one that (supposedly) was to put less stress on his arm. which would explain how he looked messed up everytime i saw him. he's a project for a pitching coach because fixing a delivery or reverting back is not all that easy. i don't have much of an opinion about chuck hernandez but we'll see how he does.

Avoidance of risk can be riskier
Man, I am going to do a bong hit over that one.
Meaning one cannot completely avoid risk, especially in a situation that requires contact/engagement with others. Define what type of risk the Sox theoretically are avoiding, and I'll give you the opposite side of the equation - the risk they are assuming by avoiding the risk you define.
So, frankly, they have done a horseshit job of risk avoidance and now are in the riskiest position - few options and flexibility.

No doubt, Kenny's interest in old man Gonzalez ended when he acquired Carlos Quentin. We need a CF'er, not a LF'er. He is probably talking to the agents of Fukudome and Rowand right now.

Cubs interested in trading for 2B Brian Roberts?
One baseball source said that there is a three-player deal on the table that would include a starting pitcher coming back to the Orioles. Although no specifics have been revealed, the Orioles in the past have been high on lefty Rich Hill and right-hander Sean Gallagher.
The Orioles would then try to sign Iguchi to replace Roberts at 2B.

I don't see it as a backup plan
And if they get both, they'll have the best offense in the NL. Unfortunately if they gave up Marshall and Gallagher, their back two in the rotation would be Dempster and Marquis.

Possibly...

Update...
That's not nearly as attractive as the packages ESPN was kicking around. We like Murton, but he's not a difference maker, and Gallagher lacks top-of-the-rotation upside. The Orioles have no reason to move Roberts unless it gets them a top talent, and neither Gallagher nor Murton qualifies. Felix Pie does, but he's not on the table right now, says the Sun.

Tigers send former slugger to Rangers for outfielder Guzman"
Great smaller move by the Rangers to fill their hole at 1B since they traded away Mark Teixeira. Now they can keep Saltalamacchia behind the plate.

La Russa goes off on Scott Rolen...
La Russa appears eager to have a Rolen-free clubhouse. "The whole idea isn't to please Scott. It's to take care of the St. Louis Cardinals. I don't understand why he can be down on the Cardinals. I don't understand why he can be down on me, to be honest," La Russa said. "The idea is to accommodate the St. Louis Cardinals, our team, our responsibility to our players and to the competition. So, no, I don't want to accomodate Scott." Speaking about the rift that's developed, La Russa added, "I can't remember ever being the combination of mystified and concerned as I am about this situation." The Brewers, Giants, Dodgers and maybe the Angels have displayed interest in trading for Rolen.

Laynce Nix
I'd put a claim in on him today as a low cost centerfield option. I've always liked him. He's just never panned out.
