Grit goes along way... to make me nauseous

Dave van Dyck is the latest to fall under Tinkerbell's spell.

It boggles my mind that Darin Erstad continues to get column inches in an article that's just new quotes around the same damn he's-a-great-teammate, a-hard-worker, did-you-know-he-played-hockey shtick that causes otherwise sane people to overlook the fact that he hasn't been good at baseball in 6 years, while that same paper didn't really feel the need to adequately cover the situation surrounding the alleged attempted murder that was really a case of extortion against our incumbent shortstop.

Only 86 words in that massive run-on. I tried, but I'm no Gammons either.

I am curious whether Juan Uribe is a monster or a victim of an injustice system in the Global South.

Don't be surprised if Sox sign Iguchi soon...
http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/whitesox.asp
Unlike Dye and Buehrle, Iguchi isn't likely to be fielding monster offers on the free-agent market next winter. So the White Sox could lock up the 32-year-old second baseman with a contract in the range of three years for $15 million.

Iguchi...
Mark Gonzales wrote:
Opening Day is the self-imposed deadline general manager Ken Williams set to sign free-agents-to-be Mark Buehrle, Jermaine Dye and Tadahito Iguchi.

After that, in theory, talks will be on hold until after the season.

It appears the Sox are not close with Buehrle and Dye, although Iguchi still could sign soon. Guillen hopes the issue does not become a distraction.

Ozzie on White Sox Weekly (radio) on BA
In an interview this morning said something to the effect that he hears the fans and media saying that BA deserves a chance to develop as a hitter like Joe Crede, but, oh well, I'm the manager, so I'll take the heat if the line-ups I choose suck. In his words...

"It's easy making the line-ups when you're at home eating popcorn and watching on TV, but you don't have to make the line-ups everyday like me."

So, he hears everyone, knows that he is likley wrong, but chooses to ignore everyone. Um, OK.

Clearly Ozzie's strength
Is not the lineup card. He has shown himself not to be too unflexible though. We can only hope it is only a matter of time before BA plays himself in and Pods out. As much as the Erstad grinder shit bothers me I could live with him in left and BA in center with Pods as a 4th and late pinch runner (he even sucks there too now.)

by Tdogg on Mar 31, 2007 8:38 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed...
I wouldn't mind the following lineup:

LF  Erstad
2B  Iguchi
DH  Thome
1B  Konerko
RF  Dye
3B  Crede
C   Pierzynski
CF  Anderson
SS  Uribe

Of course, Ozzie is far too in love with Scottie Pods to realize that this would be our best lineup.

by SSH2005 on Mar 31, 2007 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I could live with that too (BA center/Erstad LF)
I just hope he doesn't continue to be so headstrong (as he often was last year with BA and B-Mac)that he'll continue this route even if the kid shows production off the bench and the others don't show it on the field.

I've seen a lotta Erstad...
...over the years, living in SoCal.  Guess what?  He WAS a helluva player.  Sure, time takes its toll but give the man a chance.  He's a stalwart.

by RoyEgan on Mar 31, 2007 9:26 PM CDT reply actions

I don't doubt it...
And I expect the numbers he puts on the boards will be better the Pods when the year is done - provided he stays healthy this year. (and my gut feeling is he will)

by Brush Back on Mar 31, 2007 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Would love to lock up Gooch
at $5M/yr.  He's stout (as they say in the South) and if used properly (6th-7th, not 2nd) would be even better.  A great pickup in 2005.

Chris Stewart...
just won the Texas Rangers' backup catcher job.

The Rangers also DFA'ed catcher Guillermo Quiroz.  Not sure if he's any better than Gustavo Molina though.

Backup catcher...
Maybe we could bring back this guy.

Or not.

Positive
Another year. We have tickets for the Sox/Twins Friday (or is it next Friday). Time for the Golf clubs too. Taking the boy out for the first time today...to a par 3, he's got a real smooth swing (kind of scary he's only 7, we had him in the bubble in Benensenville a bunch of times over the winter). He's cranked. I like this team. I hope they DO grind but with some power too. No matter what, we've been treated to ball like I've never seen in my lifetime in this city, and we're all into it. I remember when the old place was like a ghost town. I played, but I'm no expert but I wish all the best for this team. I hate the Cubs so fuckin' much.

Go get 'em this year,

Lt E126

BP Playoff Odds report is up...
You can see it here. As you would expect, only the Royals have worse odds of making the playoffs in the AL (the Sox are listed at an 8% chance of making it).

Ah, the excitement and anticipation...

Back off Erstad
Why this continual focus on Erstad when the Sox have much greater problems? Brian Anderson is an offensive liability, period case closed. The guy cannot hit at the major league level. The only nausea I experienced last season was watching Anderson and Uribe at the plate. Erstad can do no worse. Besides, CF is the least of the problems facing the Sox.

The Sox pitching staff is something that is seriously concerning. If they repeat last season's performance we will be fortunate to finish fourth.

So find something else to harp on and leave Erstad alone. At least give him a chance to disappoint.

Nice irony!
counseling patience. No, no there's no point waiting to see if a 24 year old with one season under his belt can develop. But please withhold judgment on a guy who hasn't had an OBP over .346 since 2000 (leadoff hitter!?) who is 33 and hasn't been healthy and/or effective in CF in going on 5 years.

Let me be the first to get out the tar and feathers and predict Erstad doesn't finish the season both in town and on the field.

c'mon everyone
it's april 1. no one could possibly be so stupid as to post something like this seriously.

at any rate, take your own advice. every other post you make on here is about BA and uribe. so find something else to harp on.

by larry on Apr 1, 2007 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

How stupid of us
To make assumptions on BA after his "1st" year as opposed to Erstad after his "30th".

I mean its impossible for BA to EVER make improvement. Triple period case closed to closedness.

Reds cut Dustin Hermanson...
Dustin Hermanson was seen packing up his belongings and saying goodbye to Reds teammates on Sunday morning.
Hermanson has apparently gone from potential closer to being one of the Reds' final cuts. David Weathers is suddenly looking like a more solid pick, and Todd Coffey becomes a better sleeper.

Source:  Cincinnati Post

Pretty surprising news after the Reds talked him up all Spring Training as their possible closer.

I just heard on WSCR 670 that Pablo Ozuna...
will start in LF tomorrow on opening day due to his career line (23 AB/.391/.417/.522/.939) against Captain Cheeseburger.

At least Ozzie is making one good decision.  Now I wonder if he will start Anderson in CF as well.

by SSH2005 on Apr 1, 2007 1:02 PM CDT reply actions

Speaking of Ozuna -- Sox extend Pablo...
White Sox agreed to terms with infielder Pablo Ozuna on a one-year, $1.25 million contract extension through 2008 with a club option for 2009.
The 32-year-old Ozuna is making $800,000 this year and would have been arbitration eligible again in 2008. 2009 is his first year of free agency. There's little upside to this deal, and the possibility exists that he'll have a bad year and the White Sox will want him gone in 2008. Still, they're not risking much.

by SSH2005 on Apr 1, 2007 1:05 PM CDT reply actions

IT'S WHITE SOX SUNDAY, BABY!!!
White Sox agreed to terms with LHP Matt Thornton on a three-year, $3.25 million contract with club options for 2010 and 2011.
Thornton would have been eligible for arbitration for the first time in 2008. His breakthrough season came at age 29, so taking the money was a smart idea. He's now set for life, whereas a year ago it looked like he might never have much of a career. White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper probably deserves a bigger cut here than Thornton's agent. The White Sox could save themselves a few million with the deal if Thornton keeps pitching like he did in 2006.

Awesome news.  I hope we see one more piece of news -- Iguchi's contract extended.

Farmio out, Steve Stone in
Apparently Farmio's daughter was in a car accident, so Farmio has gone to be at her side. She is OK, but Steve Stone is filling in tomorrow.

Can we convince Farmio to take a 6-month leave of absence?

Whoa.
As a fill-in will Stone provide us with great Farmio-isms like "I'll tell you this much, the Sox will either win today or they'll lose and either way they'll be back playing on Wednesday"?

Steve Stone?
No way -- that's very neat.  I always liked him with the Cubs and was sort of hoping that he would have replaced Rooney.  Although, it's certainly not good news for the reason why he's filling in...

I'm a big fan.
He's got great insight and a dark sense of humor.  I was very much hoping that he would join Farmer when Rooney left.  But I don't think he wants a full-time gig right now.  Plus, Stone and Farmer are both color commentators.
