Today's White Sox Quote of the Day comes from Ozzie Guillen. Ozzie on Steve Phillips after Phillips statement that he [Ozzie] is on the hot seat:

"I have a better record than his manager [Bobby Valentine] did with the Mets. I have a better record as a manager than [Phillips] when he was the Mets' general manager. We pick better players than he did back then. He forgot about when I was with Atlanta and he was the general manager [of the Mets] and we beat him. He forgot I was the guy who hit the base hit to right field to win the game. ... One thing I like to do is prove people wrong."

Quick question:
Did BA's 2 hits in the B game yesterday raise him to .188, or didn't they count?

just wait
when his batting average goes up to .300 in the next week, they'll be silent. and then when it drops some again they'll all be back on the BA in charlotte bandwagon. it's march 9. we've got a sample size of about 23 ABs. his - or anyone else's batting stats - are basically irrelevant at this point.

Granted...
I have been vocally anti-BA lately on here...But have also been very clear that I am hoping he, Erstad and everyone else that I have a problem with do well.  I've been wrong about plenty in the past and gladly admit when I'm wrong.  The success of the team is what I care most about, not being right.

So hopefully you're not just grouping everyone who is vocal about their concerns into this mindless mob you're speaking of.

people are just talking options/possibilities
there's nothing else to talk about right now, i guess. it'll just be amusing to see the shift (if BA does perform like he did last spring). i'm surprised people haven't jumped on AJ yet; his stats since june or so are virtually indistinguishable from those of BA.

by larry on Mar 9, 2007 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

Jumpers
I personally think Anderson's body of work as a hitter stinks thus far, but it's too early to give up on him--especially when he has so few at-bats in the spring that a 1-1 start to a day brought his average up 47 points.

Also, with regard to Garland, I know the balls jump where they are, but do you see him having the same sorts of issues as early last year with keeping the ball down and giving up the bombs (the pitcher's version of not having enough at-bats to be comfortable again against live pitching)?

If religion is the opiate of the masses, then I reckon I'm an addict.

by Toonderstrook on Mar 9, 2007 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

I don't want the team to "give up"
on Brian.  I just don't want to be stuck in a "what now" situation if he is awful at the plate this year.  I guess like I've said before, I don't want to see the position just handed over to him unless there is reason to think he is the best solution to the CF question.

If he isn't the starter I don't want to see him traded, or even sent to the minors.  I just don't want to keep giving him AB's and hope for the Crede-esque turnaround.

Again, if he is the best option...so be it.  May he hit .400 with 78 homers.  I just want to see the team do as well as possible.

haven't seen him pitch so couldn't tell ya
i don't think you can take much from ST; last year in ST he didn't give up a home run and then the regular season starts and he can't keep it in the park. two years ago teams were launching off of him in ST and then he pitches like cy young for the first half of the regular season.

my rule for players is see how they throw/play the last week of ST. everything prior to that is pretty much meaningless.

by larry on Mar 9, 2007 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

McCotts
You keeping an eye on the Cubs-Rangers game? Cotts v. McCarthy? Each went two innings and gave up seven hits. McCarthy five runs, all earned. Cotts four runs, although none earned.

by Chiburb on Mar 9, 2007 2:53 PM CST reply actions

I
am as realistic and maintain balanced perspective as most can imagine, but, at some point, the Sox have to show some proficiency (namely, wins or at least good performances), even during the spring, because, believe it or not, self-doubt will creep in....and, at what point is it LEGITIMATE self-doubt?

by dantesox on Mar 9, 2007 2:59 PM CST up reply actions

that point
is in about two weeks. maybe for a few of the fringe players who are fighting for a spot it's a little earlier but, for everyone else, ST is working things out, trying different things, etc. most hitters will tell you it takes them about 75 ST ABs to start to feel comfortable against real pitching again. for pitchers it's even more of a crap shoot because they're actively encouraged to throw their least reliable stuff the most. numbers often tell very little of the story - you actually have to watch them throw to figure out whether they've got it.

by larry on Mar 9, 2007 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

I'd be very worried...
...if the team had players who let doubt slip in over losing games that don't count.  The only way I could see a true professional ballplayer getting concerned is if he is playing poorly and doesn't feel like he can play better.  Hell, I knew in little league that scrimmage wins and losses didn't matter.

Ozzie and his comments
Ever notice how Ozzie always says what other people say doesn't bother him?  And then he responds like the biggest red-ass in baseball.  Then he denies he said anything and he was misunderstood because of his cultural and language differences.  Meanwhile the line of people that call him a liar gets bigger.

Shut up and win.

Danks
Thumbs up! 3 scoreless innings 7-2 groundballs to flyout. Why do I have such a love affair with Haegar and Danks? What do the Sox do if this kid performs all spring?

by Tdogg on Mar 9, 2007 4:00 PM CST reply actions

Then
he's your #5 and Floyd gets his act together in AAA. Haeger is long man. And, if I'm dangling one of our left-handed relievers as trade bait, it's Sisco, not Logan.

by dantesox on Mar 9, 2007 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

count me in
on the love affair, with danks at least, and gio, who i was glad to see come back.  from all the talk surrounding floyd, it seems like he'd really have to shit the bed while danks is lights-out for danks to make the team.  but i think the sox are at least somewhat open to the possibility, whereas i doubt gio could make the team no matter how good he looked this spring (so far so good, though).

Did I miss that he was injured?  I just noticed he's only played in one game this spring.

by the wimperoo on Mar 9, 2007 4:20 PM CST reply actions

yeah
he's coming off that elbow surgery and apparently he's not fully ready yet. i think he appeared in one game and left early. calf, IIRC.

Gio & Danks
4 DPs in 5 innings pitched.

0 strikeouts. 2 walks.

I'd rather see fewer DPs/baserunners and more strikeouts. Those are more reliable indicators of future success.

what do you think about Scott Hairston for LF?
[mlbtraderumors.com]
The Diamondbacks will probably look to trade Scott Hairston and/or Dave Krynzel, with no chance of Hairston hitting waivers.  I'm rooting for Hairston, a talented player who has endured some terrible luck and timing.  I think Kenny Williams should get on the phone with Josh Byrnes.  They've completed several deals in the past together, and Hairston is a perfect fit for left field on the Sox.

what would he cost?

by The Wizard on Mar 9, 2007 7:23 PM CST reply actions

Hairy
Wiz, I know little about this guy but do see that the Sox originally drafted him way back in the day. What is to be so excited about?
If religion is the opiate of the masses, then I reckon I'm an addict.

by Toonderstrook on Mar 9, 2007 7:42 PM CST up reply actions

He's not Pods?
I assume Wiz just wants a different LF. And Hairston has shown some ability to hit (wasn't he involved in a "supplements" scandal though? maybe I'm misremembering).

The lamentable fact is that the Sox aren't looking for a LF. They're committed to having a (low OBP but) speedy leadoff man. And due to the lack of defensive ability shown by both Pods and Ozuna, that leadoff man has to play LF. It's pretty poor way to construct a roster, I think, but there it is.

Even if the Sox were interested in a different LF, I think Fields or Sweeney would get that shot before trading for Hairston.

The lamentable fact is that the Sox aren't looking for a LF.

probably yes but I have a little hope kenny may do something

Fields or Sweeney would get that shot

about fields: don't you think they prefer not to take him "down" from 3B to LF and risk having difficulty to go back up in a year or two?

about sweeney: don't you think they prefer to let him develop at the minors?

by The Wizard on Mar 9, 2007 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

different Hairston
Jerry Hairston Jr. is the one you're thinking of that's invovled in this new mess
