Will John Danks be the White Sox 5th starter?

Taking Stock of the 5th Starter Candidates

Gavin Floyd -- Floyd entered spring training as the 5th starter favorite by default. He still seems to hold that position, though his final inning of work in his last outing may have loosened his grip on the position. I'd give him equal odds with Haeger and Danks on winning the job.

Update [2007-3-9 23:54:34 by The Cheat]: Kenny Williams "could not be more pleased" with Floyd's spring thus far. With that knowledge, I suppose he should still be considered the favorite.

Charlie Haeger -- Even before he threw a pitch, the White Sox acknowledged that it would be difficult to evaluate Haeger and his knuckleball in the thin, dry air of Tucson. As such, I haven't really put much weight (good or bad) behind what I've seen from Haeger this spring. I expect him to be back in Charlotte's rotation come opening day.

John Danks -- When he arrived at camp, Danks seemed to be destined for Charlotte only to be called upon when he dominated AAA and/or the 5th starter fell flat on his trip north. Danks has now had three impressive outings, including Friday's three innings pitched while facing the minimum, and has been the most impressive starting pitcher in camp. I've only been able to catch two innings of his work, but I thought he looked surprisingly polished. I expect him to get a couple of "A" game starts based on his latest outing.

Gio Gonzalez -- Gio's stuff is as good as advertised, but he clearly needs to work on refining his control. He should end up in Charlotte working on throwing more strikes (and keeping the ball in the park) while (hopefully) putting himself back among the elite lefty prospects in the game.

Heath Phillips -- If the Sox goal was only to have a better-than-Felix-Diaz, non-disasterous 5th starter, Phillips would be my choice. He's not going to wow you with his stuff, but he's learned how to use what little stuff he does have to be an effective pitcher.

Floyd, Haeger, and Danks should all be starting "A" games from now until it's clear that they've lost their shot at 5th starter duties. The Sox should let the other 4 starters alternate pitching in "B" games in order to let the three 5th starter candidates face lineups comprised of mostly major leaguers.

Three questions...
Some things I'm curious about, in case anyone knows the answer

How hard is Floyd throwing? The PHI papers said at the time of the trade that he had lost 2-3 MPH off his fastball (which would put him around 91 or 92 MPH now). Is that accurate?

Related question: is Kenny Williams delusional? It seems like Floyd is going to be the 5th starter. I know Williams might just be trying to be positive with Floyd given his comments today, but still... Does anyone see something in Floyd? I only have numbers to go on, and those don't look good...

Could Phillips be a reliever? LOOGYs seem to actually be shockingly valuable in the big leagues. The Sox got Riske for a AAA LOOGY, the Twins picked up a good 2B prospect for JC Romero. It would be nice to have a surplus of lefties...

Bonus question: what is the average airspeed of an unladen swallow?

I dunno
None of these guys makes me giddy with anticipation.  Spring cleaning in the garage today, might as well dig up the pitchfork and torch.

Danks and Gio
Both of them are interesting to me.  I don't know that Gio is going to be durrable enough to go a full season but that might just be the fact that he is only 5'11" 185 and everything seems to be going toward bigger pitchers these days.  But Danks is going to be a "for real" good pitcher.

Haeger though?  Not so much, I just never have faith in a knuckleballer getting anything done consistantly.

Wakefield
I dont know Tim has gone a long way to proving they can be at least league average (sometimes way better in his career). With Haegar's youth he can be staple on this team for a long time.

Agreed...
it can be done.  If Haegar has it in him I am all for him being a fifth starter...or better if he proves it.  Just personally I don't get too high on knuckleballers...its a personal thing.  I hope he is an absolute stud though.

Hmm...
after rereading this I should clarify.

When I said "Haeger though?  Not so much" I didn't mean to imply that he couldn't be a good pitcher.  Just that I was less confident in him.  Just after rereading figured I should clarify.

wilbur wood
wilbur wood had some years when he was about the best pitcher in baseball. if i remember right i saw him pitch in both games of a double header. sometimes it takes longer for a knuckle ball pitcher to develop. wood was a reliever first. gio = ron guidry ?

it's down to floyd or danks
[Scott Merkin]
After a Saturday morning meeting involving general manager Ken Williams, manager Ozzie Guillen and Guillen's coaching staff, it now appears as if Gavin Floyd or John Danks will be taking the fifth in regard to the final slot of the White Sox rotation.

but haeger is not out of it

whalen
[Nathaniel Whalen]
Floyd is a taller right-hander with an above average curve, a solid fastball and he is working on a slider this spring. He's had some problems in the past and is said by some to be too nice.

Danks is a relatively short left-hander who throws with less velocity but pounds right-handers inside on a regular basis. He appears to have a cutter and a curve and gets lots of ground balls. That he's only 21 is a problem and he hasn't had any major league experience.

Heh
Seriously, 5 tiny .png images must just be chewing through their precious bandwidth...

That replacement image is pretty well done though.
