Almost Perfect

Mark Buehrle became the first White Sox pitcher since Joe Horlen in 1967 to throw a no-hitter at home, and the first in USCF history. He was tantalizingly close to pitching the 18th perfect game in major league history. A 5th inning walk to Sammy Sosa was the lone blemish on Buehrle's pitching line, and he would erase the baserunner two pitches later by picking Sosa off of first base.

Buehrle made Sosa look so foolish on changeups in his first at-bat that he had no intention of giving Sosa anything other than changeups near the zone in his second at-bat. Sosa didn't flail as wildly as was to be expected, and walked on just 5 pitches. Not quite as bad as Tuesday's bone-headed pitch selection to Sosa, but it was tough to watch Samme take first after winning a battle of wills.

9 innings of no-hit baseball. 27 batters faced. Amazing.

While Buehrle was very close to perfection, he wouldn't have been there if not for some stellar defense behind him. Joe Crede, Juan Uribe, Tadahito Iguchi, and Jermaine Dye all turned in fine defensive plays.

  • In the second inning, Dye caught a high fly ball at the wall that might have saved a home run. Hard to tell if it would have cleared the wall, but it was hit a long way.
  • In the third, Crede dove into foul territory to rob Jerry Hairston Jr. of extra bases with a spectacular dive-and-throw. Hairston dove headfirst into first, and was called out on bang-bang play. He was tossed for arguing on the play.
  • In the 5th, Tadahito Iguchi smothered a ball in shallow left that, combined with the pick-off of Sosa, signaled that something special was in the works.
  • In the 7th, Crede couldn't get to a ball in the hole, but Juan Uribe was waiting with one foot on the outfield grass for the plant-and-fire to easily get Michael Young at first.
Buehrle's fastball was popping 89 MPH in the first inning, which is encouraging considering he couldn't top 86 in the second half last year, and even touched 90 according to the CSN gun. The renewed life on his fastball, combined with a great cutter running in on righties in the mid-80's, and a changeup in the high-70's should answer most of our lingering questions following last season's ineffective finish. What's surprising is Buehrle seemed to ditch his curveball, which was supposedly the pitch that Sandy Alomar was supposed to help Buehrle re-establish late last year.

Buehrle has allowed just 3 baserunners in his last 15 innings pitched, and has looked much more like the pitcher we'd come to know pre-July '06. I think it's safe bet that we won't be seeing that other guy for any extended period of time this year.

* * * * *

On the offensive side, Jim Thome continues to carry the team. It would be nice if we had some guys hitting well to surround him.

Kevin Millwood, who threw a no-no of his own in 2003, had a bit of trouble with Eric Cooper's strike zone in the 5th, walking Jim Thome and Paul Konerko to load the bases. After after falling behind Jermaine Dye 3-0, the two engaged in an extended battle in which Dye fouled of 6 straight pitches before finally lining one into the White Sox bullpen for a grand slam.

Dye has all of the Sox hits with RISP (2) in the last 4 games. So while the Sox offense awoke with a 6-run outburst, they're hardly stringing together the rallies we've grown to expect.

Cooper was also behind the plate for Hideo Nomo's no-hitter.

* * * * *

The no-hitter will, no doubt, spark talk of Buehrle's contract situation and lead many to claim this as an early season turning point. I'd rather sit back and enjoy the performance.

Tim Kirkjian reports that it was the first game in major league history that featured all of the following:

  1. a no-hitter (Buehrle)
  2. a multi-HR game (Thome)
  3. a grand slam (Dye)
That's why I love baseball.

And sorry for the shitty recap
I was really struggling to come up with words worthy of matching buehrle's performance.

In the end, I just settled for a random stream of notes.

Chicagoags: set yr Tivo/DVD/Betamax
Comcast is rebroadcasting the game at 2:30CT today, should you wish to preserve this gem.  (Or, if you should out of the goodness of your heart send a DVD copy to out-of-market fans.)

I was watching that game while out at dinner
last night, but the TV was so far away I didn't realize Buerhle had a no hitter going until I got home in the seventh.  I'm more than a little pissed girlfriend obligations kept me from watching the entire game.  But, I'm so happy it ended up being Mark Buerhle to break our 16 year long no-hitter drought.

If you would have taken a poll at the beginning of the year asking which pitcher was most likely to pitch a no-hitter, Buerhle might well have been at the bottom of the list.  I didn't think he had a performance like this in him still, but thank god he did.  It couldn't happen to a better guy.

Oh, Darrin Erstad sucks.

by chrome on Apr 19, 2007 7:17 AM CDT reply actions

Mark B and of course who else, Erstad
Great game. Early while watching and flipping back and forth (damn Bulls), I remarked to my buddy "damn he looks good and did he just hit 90 on the gun?"

Ladies and Gentlemen I believe we have a pitching staff again!

If we could ust see some hitting with that......

WTF is Erstad doing at the top of this lineup??? Im sorry to spoil all the good will but this is driving me crazy! What is it going to take?

Holy mind-reading!
"In the 5th, Tadahito Iguchi smothered a ball in shallow left that, combined with the pick-off of Sosa, signaled that something special was in the works."

After that play I came in from the deck to tell my wife that MB was going to throw the no-no.

And the recap was NOT shitty.

It should be called Bill Veeck Park!

by Chiburb on Apr 19, 2007 8:43 AM CDT reply actions

You know when I came back from dinner
and turned on the game in the seventh, I told my girlfriend Buehrle was throwing a no-hitter.  I then told her how you're never supposed to utter the words 'no-hitter' until the game is over, but I didn't believe in ridiculous superstitions.

The rest of the game I was scared shitless I ruined Mark's no-no.

by chrome on Apr 19, 2007 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Coolest of all:
MB was walking up and down the dugout saying "talk to me guys, I know I'm throwing a no-hitter".

unfortunately i stopped "watching" (internet browsing) in the 7th inning.  i'm working in miami right now, and with the EST it was getting pretty late over here.  i knew mark had a no-hitter going but figured it would get broken up by the ninth.  i woke up this morning and was shocked to find a picture of mark on the cover of USA today outside my hotel room.  pretty damn cool.

he's gonna get that seven year deal now, isn't he?

Welcome to FL, bro.  Just bend over once you hit the hotel and smile - it'll go better that way.

PS  We're supposed to feel bad that you are living in SoBe and being charged $11/day for wifi?  What's the weather like in Chi-town the last month, boys?  And other than the beautiful (morally casual) women, ocean view, great cuisine, etc. it must be a real bitch having to hang around on $60/day PLUS salary PLUS hotel/car.  $1800/month stashed as optional savings ain't a bad living.  But I can see where the $11 is a real ball-buster!

As Earl Butz, former Sec'y of Agriculture once said in defense of farm subsidies (I think that was the subject matter) "Don't bitch with your mouth full!"

Enjoy yourself.

A real ballplayer leading off
Uribe has same number of walks as our leadoff man with 10 fewer plate appearances.  No comment.

And since I'm sick of him I'm taking away that HR he had against Sabathia opening day, that was a total fluke.  So his adjusted SLG should be .133 and OBP of .204, giving him an fluke-adjusted OPS of .337

That's OPS mind you - .337 would be a shit OBP for a leadoff man.

And believe it or not, Crede's OPS (non-adjusted) is less than DE - we're going to have to measure both of them on the Kelvin scale soon.

It's a miracle Sox are one game under .500

by ChicagoPete on Apr 19, 2007 11:36 AM CDT reply actions

This is truly a problem
What are our options here? I think we have to start hoping for Erstad to perform. I wish so much didn't ride on this clown, but it does. We can almost count Pods out at this point. So who bats leadoff? Even if Anderson supplants Erstad in CF--which won't happen--he's no leadoff hitter. Gooch maybe? What kind of lineup are we looking at? I mean, it's pretty sad that Thome has 5 HR and only 8 RBI.

by southsider80 on Apr 19, 2007 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes Yes
Why cant gooch lead off? We can hope to our hearts delight Erstad aint performing. Oh he will hit higher than .160 but at this point I CANT root for him to do well because he will do more damage at .230 for a longer time than an outright crash that even Ozzie cant ignore.

If Gooch leads off (on games Pablo doesnt) who bats 2nd? Sigh this whole damn thing pisses me off.

by Tdogg on Apr 19, 2007 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Iguchi
Is there a law stating that Iguchi can't bat leadoff - I mean, other than the Law of Ozzie?

vs RHP

Iguchi - 2B
Mackoviak - LF
Konerko - 1B
Thome - DH
Dye - RF
Crede - 3B
Piercynski - C
Uribe - SS
Anderson - CF

vs LHP

Ozuna - LF
Iguchi - 2B
Konerko - 1B
Thome - DH
Dye - RF
Crede - 3B
Piercynski - C
Uribe - SS
Anderson - CF

Fuck Pods, Fuck Erstad.  We can score more than enough runs with the above lineups.

by ChicagoPete on Apr 19, 2007 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I like either
and I like the idea of Gooch leading off. Why the hell not? He can steal from time to time, plus he has a high on base %. We can do what the Red Sox did last year with Youkalis--just have a body on base so the mid order mashers can drive him home. I know Ozzie is married to himself and his notion of Ozzieball, but maybe the Sox need a new plan.

Check that. The Sox DO need a new plan. Erstad blows.

by southsider80 on Apr 19, 2007 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Hell
Just to show that I'm a charitable guy, I'll let Erstad platoon with BA in center - as long as he bats NINTH goddammit.

by ChicagoPete on Apr 19, 2007 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll Erstad
platoon with Terrero in Charlotte. And since Ozzie in love with the both of them, he can go down there and coach.

by southsider80 on Apr 19, 2007 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

(I'll Let Erstad)
is what that's supposed to say.

by southsider80 on Apr 19, 2007 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

That's where the improvement comes
I can't say with absolute certainty that Anderson would post better numbers than Erstad. He's still got a long swing, and doesn't look much like a big-leaguer at the dish. All we know is that guys his age, with his pedigree, tend to improve, while guys Erstad's age, with his injury history and 6-consecutive below average seasons, tend to decline and aren't likely to put up a respectable line.

At the very least, if Anderson was in the line-up everyday, playing CF, he'd be batting 9th instead of 1st, which would mean more at-bats for real players. That's an improvement over our current situation.
