Opening day...
I am jacked up!  Seriously, I wasn't this excited last year...something about coming off of a championship felt a little odd.  But for some reason I woke up this morning feeling like this is going to be a hell of a season.

Our first real glimpse of Jeter love...
...Jeter throws one away and the focus is on how the first baseman has to make the play even on a bad throw.

...The regular season really is underway now

Now that the regular season is going to start...
...I have gone ahead and realized that Ozzie is going to put these types of lineups on the field.  I'm going to try to just take a "wait and see" approach.  Maybe Erstad is going to go back to his form of 6 years ago...Every year a few players jump up and shock you.  I'm just hoping they're all on our team.

Up until the last 20 minutes you were tracking the WinExp every 5 minutes.  (Slight exaggeration.)

Good advice, though.  Disn't Ohio State run back the opening kickoff, then Florida rammed the rest of the game down their throat in the BCS game in Jamuary.  Don't take the initial impression as a portent for the whole season.

How does a guy with his arm seem to have an aversion for the zone?  I mean, if the Gameday stuff is correct, the only strikes he gets are when people swing at his pitches out of the zone.  That pitch to Martinez was one of the first pitches I saw him throw that actually would have been a strike.  Was he like this in Spring Training?

Relax my friend...
every game matters, but only counts for 1/162 of the season overall.  I was stoked about opening day and I'm pissed off at an 11-2 score in the 3rd inning.  If you stick to the "every game matters" and take it that hard when our guys lose...you're gonna end up in the nuthouse by the all-star break.

MLB Gameday
I wonder what they are using to track these pitches.  That 2nd called strike on Nixon was clearly out of the zone judging by the pitch animation.  With the old design they rarely showed a called strike being out of the zone (I always assumed they didn't want to show up the umps).

Erstad just lost 1 grinder point...
he made a catch running toward the outfield wall...but simply stopped himself after catching it.  The ultimate grinder would have kept running and smashed face first into the fence just to prove something.  It's not about getting the out...it's about being tough.

Plus that homer?  Maybe he isn't as grindy as we thought.

I have to say, when I first saw Sisco a few years ago, I thought he had NASTY stuff.  I didn't understand what happened to him.  If Coop worked some of his magic, I'll be very happy.

He's looked good so far.

It does suck...
it's one of my least favorite games to see my team lose, because you wait for it for so long.

I'm pulling another positive of this being a good day to have to use the bullpen (if there is such a thing).  No game tomorrow means time to rest the arms.

IIRC, we scored a run on a ball that Peralta botched.  Who hit the ball?  None other than the first grinder and god among men, Aaron Rowand!  We should've known then and there that 2005 was ours.

was at the game today
what a disaster. barely settled into the seat before all hell broke loose. i was confused before the game as to why contreras was our #1 starter and i still am.

by larry on Apr 2, 2007 4:19 PM CDT reply actions

Unfortunately.....
we don't really have a #1, though I guess I'd say if anyone it's Garland.

Frustrating way to start the season.....I know Contreras's forkball wasn't there and I realize he doesn't possess an overpowering fastball, but his arm might be dead...those fastballs were more hittable than I've ever seen from him...bad sign.

The only positive about that....
was that I sold my opening day tickets. Thank god! I'll be there wednesday. We couldn't possibly be worse than we were today.

By the way, I have some below face value tics on sale at Stubhub. There are actually a bunch of really good below face value tics available that day on stubhub. Mine has the added advantage of including a parking pass (sec 111 row 11).

by ballyb on Apr 2, 2007 5:22 PM CDT reply actions

Westbrook
Already moved on. 4 of our first 5 hitters have greater than .900 OPS vs. Westbrook. Of course we know who the exception is. Of course Cleveland pounds Garland as well. But you never know.

by bhoov on Apr 2, 2007 5:59 PM CDT reply actions

Not a Surprise
One game doesn't make a season but unfortunately it has been more than one game. If you consider spring training, today's result was unfortunately not a surprise. This pitching staff scares me. This could be one loooooooooooooooong season! I hope I'm wrong but I'm not encouraged.

We seriously need a reliable starting pitcher. If I was KW I would be on the phone with Mr. Clemens. He may be old, he may be expensive but he would have an excellent chance at a sub 3.00 ERA. I know Chicago is not on his list but I would give it a try. For all of the nay sayers do you have a more feasible alternative? If KW stays with this staff we may be lucky to win 80 games.
