Around SBN: Do Sinker-Ballers Pitch Better on Short Rest? Bar-right-arrows

Meet the new offense, same as the old offense

It was another night of firsts Thursday at US Cellular Field.

 • Joe Crede hit his first extra-base knock of the season.
 • AJ Pierzynski and Rob Mackowiak each hit their first HR and recorded their first (real) RBI of the year. Previously, AJ had the walk-off HBP, but I hardly count that as an RBI.
 • Jim Thome walked 5 times in a game for the first time in his career, tying a White Sox team record in the process. That's a month's worth of free passes for a number of current Sox.
 • Bobby Jenks touched 95 MPH for the first time this season.
The offense is still in homer-or-next-to-nothing mode, but over the past two games the Sox bats have started to show some signs of life. Yesterday, there appeared to be a better a approach by a number of our hitters, AJ and Konerko in particular; today they showed good patience collectively, and drove in their second run via the base hit in 4 games. That's gotta be a record or something. There's plenty of room for improvemt, as they left 10 men on base and Konerko struck out twice with the bases loaded. This very easily could have been a blowout.
* * * * *

With the exception of a 2-0 fastball over the heart of the plate to Sammy Sosa, Javier Vazquez had little trouble dispatching the Rangers for the first 5 innings. Unlike last season, however, he was able to limit the damage after the 5th. In the 6th, He gave up a 2-out, run-scoring double that probably had many in attendance worried about a return of 6th Inning Javy. But he made quick work of Mark Teixeira to escape any further damage. Last season, it wasn't a question of whether he would give up the late inning run-scoring double, but how many.

Pitching into the 7th, Javy was pulled after giving up a deep Mackowiak-aided double to Sosa. In Mack's defense, if Podsednik was playing LF, the ball probably would have ricocheted off his head, Cansecoing into the bullpen to tie the game at 3. Two batters later, the run would score, giving Vazquez another no-decision. Mackowiak would later make up for his outfield gaffe by giving the Sox some much needed insurance runs with the aforementioned home run.

* * * * *

The relief behind Vazquez was better than you'd think of a group that had a blown save, let an inherited runner score, and allowed a run of their own. Andy Sisco gave up a tough luck double that didn't even plate Sosa from second. MacDougal then retired the first 3 batters he saw, for which he earned the blown save. Even Jenks, who has struggled to pitch above 93 all season, made quick work of things in the 9th.

Aside from Crede's double and go-ahead RBI, Jenks outing was the highlight of the night. He seemed to struggle mechanically to the first batter he faced, a 5 pitch walk. But after that, it was all business. He was comfortably sitting at 94 and hit 95 at least three times. Though, admittedly, I wasn't counting. Maybe Bobby really does need longer than most guys to get his arm back to full strength. I'd suggest that he start his throwing regimen 3 or 4 weeks earlier, but he broke down at the end of last season.

* * * * *

I couldn't be more disappointed with the way the Sox chose to attack Sammy Sosa. They almost made him appear like a major leaguer. It shouldn't be a surprise that the only starter to hold him in the yard was the one who chose to use both the inside and outside of the plate. Even Sammy can crush fastballs over the heart of the plate.

I'd like to dedicate the title of this post to Cubs fan and Bartman stalker, Eric Zorn.

Back to break-even
So the Sox are back to .500, and off to Detroit for three days. The starters have looked better than we might've hoped, the 'pen has pretty much lived up to Kenny's krazy vision of pure power, the fielding has been all over the place, the bats are playing peek-a-boo and the lineups continue to befuddle.

While I like to think we should wait until Memorial Day to pass judgment, it seems like the Sox have a chance to make a statement with five games against the Tigers over the next week. But two of those games are against Nate Robertson, possessor of one of those deadly left arms the Sox fear so much. Can they do it?

Stretch!

No idea if we can win.
But with Erstad, by God, we can grind their pants off.

And, again,
I forgot which board I was on.  I should start using preview.

Good game...
Vazquez looked solid (though I don't know why we kept giving Sammy fast balls to hit). The double should have been an easy catch, I think Rob was afraid of the wall after having hit it earlier (was qualified to show those socks till the bad miss - looked like he was hiding by the bullpen after the miss). Rob did make up for it with 2 hits, including the HR after it though. Nice to see Bobby hitting mid 90s with the fastball again (looks like he added some pounds back on to aide him). Grindtastic got one out of the infield for a hit early on and Uribe can bunt!

Good game to be at + the Sammy Sucks chants were most enjoyable

Thank god!
I'd seen the Zorn...thing and then saw the title of your post and I thought I was losing my flippin' mind.  Then you liked to Zorn's waste of time so...I feel better.

Eric Zorn...
I'll give him a pass after his hilarious dissection of Jay Mariotti columns about the White Sox during the course of the 2005 season.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 20, 2007 10:33 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That really was excellent...
I particularly liked when Mariotti wrote a column questioning if the Sox would win another game that year the same day they started the 15-1 stretch the culminated in the WS championship.

Speaking of "Ozzieball"...
I saw a graphic on the telecast that said 60% of all Sox runs have come via HRs.
But I didn't hear Hawk or DJ speak about it since I was out on the deck.  Did they find a way to spin the facts into grinderosity?
It should be called Bill Veeck Park!

They said it's fine
as long as you're hitting .270 as a club or something, but that it doesn't win you games if you're not getting many non-homer hits.  So they were essentially saying you need guys on base, but, mysteriously, they didn't mention Erstad's inability to do just that.

by Ryno on Apr 20, 2007 10:15 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Thanks
To be fair, Erstud did get on base twice last night.  You know, blind hogs and all that...

Link to the recap on espn.com:
"Sosa homers, but ChiSox fall again to Texas"

It is one thing when Gameday makes it seem like the Sox traded players mid-game, but they had time to get this one right.

About what I expect from ESPN...
poor writing and editing.

Although I doubt they would make the same mistake with the red sawks or yankoffs.

GO SOX!

ESPN
Has unpaid intern monkeys write any sports story that takes place anywhere west of Philadelphia. The rest of the staff is for the Sawx and Yanks.

To be fair, I haven't visited ESPN.com or watched ESPN in nearly a year now...still, I hate this weekend--when the Sawx take on the Tanks. ESPN--and mlb.com to an extent--make it seem like the GD World Series is going on.

I am not encouraging injuring someone
but Sammy should have had at least one fastball between the shoulder blades. Again not injure, just keep from feeling comfortable up there. They might as well put it on a tee for him.

Man, I couldn't agree more
Hindsight being what is it, I was thinking the same thing right before he hit the "double" - he needs to be drilled, just for general principals.  But especially because he was "teeing" off (yeah, there's the reason for the colloquialism, as you stated earlier).

Plus, we all know his arrogance grows with his success (I bet he's blastin salsa in the clubhouse again - where's Mark Grace when you need him?), so at least a dust-off would take him down a peg or two.

To think I named my dog after him 9-ish years ago.  I am an ass.  (Hey, at least she's a bitch - Sammi.  And docile.  And eats her own poop, just like the old man.)

Sox News
I'm guessing Buehrle's no hitter will be on itunes ($1.99) sometime soon.  They put up a game of the week for each league.

Also, Haigwood has been traded to the Red Sox.

Go Badgers!

by shaftr on Apr 20, 2007 11:46 AM CDT   0 recs

Is something...
wrong with Haigwood?  I can't find that he's pitched at all thus far this season.

PS Sunday is Earth Day
and, coincidentally, the 10th year anny of my wife's an my first date.  So I was wondering who you all though would be the poster boy for the Sox representing Earth Day.  You know, the "earthiest" Sox.

Just in case you are bored and waiting for your next appointment at work, like I am.

Maybe Tadihito?
Iguchi translated means "Anniversary Tree".

Then again, he does seem to defy Earth's gravity:

It's all such a delicate balance.

Thome
Because he's a downstate farm boy, so I'm sure he still loves the land.  I think Crede communes with nature too.  Although I've heard his definition of "communing with nature" is to shoot turkeys.

by Happy Felsch on Apr 20, 2007 1:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Macdougal!
Look at the various facial hair styles he has sported since being on the team.  Gotta be some sort of hippy-ish background with that guy.  I imagine Crede and Buehrle constantly listening to him telling them how terrible they are for killing all those Missouri woodland animals!

by defensive indifference on Apr 20, 2007 2:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

probably has more to do with
that fractured skull he had. you're never quite right after that.

by larry on Apr 20, 2007 2:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well...
I personally give props to any player who wears his facial hair in any fashion other than the baseball-player-cliched goatee (see: Ozzie, Paulie, Dye, etc.).

Sure
but Paulie looks cool.

Bring on the consultants
As JD gets bigger and slower, a nice big 'stache would help complete his look.

Isn't Paulie all cleaned up this week?

Fernando Vina should be hired as the ChiSox facial hair consultant. I think he got ahold of Buehrle!

Stretch!

by stevegoz on Apr 20, 2007 3:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, someone took a straight
razor to Paulie's face.  Like freaking Solomon cutting his hair Paulie's strength has left him.  Paulie needs to Earth Day it up - do the Jeremiah Johnson thing and let the freak flag fly.

Bet he hits a dinger if he starts putting on the Roger Clemens-unshaved-on-game-day look.

by winningugly on Apr 20, 2007 3:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ozzie still sucks...
He let Erstad face Ron Mahay (a lefty) with a Mackowiak on 2nd base and 1 out when we still needed runs.  If Ozzie is not going to pinch-hit Anderson in that situation or even pinch hit Ozuna and stick Anderson out in CF as the defensive replacement, we need a new manager.  A 15 year old baseball fan would know to make these basic managerial moves.

And either play Anderson or send him to AAA and call up Luis Terrero or re-sign Eduardo Perez.  I'm not even a big Anderson fan but this is getting ridiculous.  Darin Erstad is hurting our team more than Ozzie's former love, Timo Perez, ever did.

ESPN
Get the vaseline out boys, the Yankees and Red Sox are playing each other. I'm sure Gammons has been counting down the flippin' seconds to this day.

by southsider80 on Apr 20, 2007 12:57 PM CDT   0 recs

In defense of that rivalry
It is a pretty good one.  There hasn't been another team to do shit in the AL East other than those two in a decade, and Boston still can't win the division in the regular season.  In the AL Central, everyone with the exception of the Royals has won the division or been in the playoffs in the last 10 years.  Yes, ESPN is happily lubing up for their version of baseball porn (and with vaseline - how old school), but take away their jack...umm...hammer obsession with all things Spanks and Sux and it's still good baseball.

by Happy Felsch on Apr 20, 2007 1:08 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yup
it gets overplayed on espn for a national audience but, honestly, you're not going to see a better collection of baseball talent than when these two teams play.

by larry on Apr 20, 2007 1:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

As we speak...
The Yankees lead the majors in runs scored/game (6.50), while the Red Sox lead the majors in fewest runs allowed/game (2.57).

It's a pretty interesting matchup.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 20, 2007 1:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No doubt
the baseball is solid. ESPN is just, well, we all know.

by southsider80 on Apr 20, 2007 1:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

can't say i really do anymore
i don't watch espn except for when games are on. sportscenter and baseball tonight and all that other "programming" they have on there is just silly. the announcers during the game don't seem to play things up any more than other announcers for other games.

by larry on Apr 20, 2007 1:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Earthiest
gotta be the grindiest! Since he's always covered in mother earth.

Fun early season stats: Guess who leads MLB in OBP and is second in MLB in OPS? That's right Thome. He's got a .561 OBP, 70 points higher than the next guy. Hi OBP vs. righties? A sick .615!

by bhoov on Apr 20, 2007 1:01 PM CDT   0 recs

See, that was my thought, too
since he's always covered in dirt, even when sitting on the bench.  He's like a dog that has to roll around in his own crap just to smell properly.

Very Earthy!

MLB.com photos
What is with those Gameday photos? Most guys look as though they were struck in the head with a blunt object just prior to snapping the picture.
