Masset vultures win with help of poor defense

For the first time all season, John Danks learned what it was like to pitch with a lead at the big league level. Even though he left with the Sox down by 2, you had to be impressed by the effort.

The offense may have shown up for the first time in a game started by Danks, but the defense was not up to par while he was on the mound. Danks was able to pitch over a failed double play, but he would exit in the 5th when the defense turned a routine play into runs.

With 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, Danks induced a high pop-up behind short from Magglio Ordonez. Juan Uribe raced under it, waved his arms as if to call off all other fielders, then at the last second he ran away from the ball as fast as he could. The runners were moving since there were 2 outs, leaving runners at 2nd and 3rd, and a tie game. Danks gave up a single through the hole to the next batter, and was given the hook by Ozzie.

Normally we mock Aaron Rowand's mythical status around here, but I'll say this without fear of hyperbole; Those three 5th inning runs wouldn't have scored with Aaron Rowand in CF. In his last couple years here, he didn't let silly hand motions from some infielder coming into his outfield stop him from trying to catch a ball.

Judging by the way all three players reacted, I'd have to say that Uribe probably mistook some crowd noise -- it was a Standing Room Only crowd at Comerica Friday -- for one of his outfielders calling for the ball. The reactions of Erstad and Mackowiak as the ball landed between all three defenders made it pretty clear that neither had called off Uribe.

That lone play is the difference between Danks current ERA of 5.06 and his theoretical ERA of 3.31 if Uribe doesn't hear any ghostly footsteps.

* * * * *

The offense scored 3 runs via the ball-in-play versus 2 runs via the home run. I've got nothing against home runs, but the Sox success this season will not be determined by their ability to hit the longball. We all know they're going to hit HRs. They have to be able to string together hits, and make the most out of rallies. 3 runs via the ball-in-play matches their total from the previous 4 games. I'll take it. Baby steps.

The bullpen continues to be huge strength.

  • Masset bridged the gap after the short start from Danks.
  • Aardsma looks like he'll give Ozzie 4 guys who are capable of closing in an emergency.
  • Ozzie got handedness happy in the 8th, but Thornton and MacDougal didn't make him pay for burning through his bullpen. (It will happen sometime this season. We'll be going to the 10th tied with only Masset and Sisco left, and the other team holding onto their closer.)
  • Jenks was 92-94 with his fastball one day after touching 95.

I was very happy with his pitch selection to Gary Sheffield. If Bobby isn't going to touch the high-90's, there's no reason for Sheff to see anything but breaking balls and off-speed stuff. I don't care what his average is right now. That guy can hit fastballs.

I'm going to miss the game Saturday. -- I don't even know what time it starts. -- So you guys are on your own for gamethreads and recaps. Don't trash the place.

Re: Rowand
You're probably right that he makes the catch, but there's also a high probability of him colliding with either Mack or Uribe, ending in somebody tearing an ACL.

Not denying that either
But in all the praise heaped Erstad's way, I thought that was a play he clearly didn't give the same effort that Mr. Rowand brought on similar plays in the past.

erstad
after going, 2 for 5 tonight, is hitting .185.

erstad is leading off for the sox.  i don't know about anyone else in here, but i don't feel a much confidence when he steps to the plate.

it may be time for a screed against the very words "grinder" and "gamer."  you don't see "grinder quotient" in baseball's increasingly sophisticated predictive engines.

you don't hear the term "grinder" attached to the names of any of the game's legitimate players.  to me, a grinder is someone who needs to hide his innate suckiness behind a facade of extra hustle, silly dives and reckless collisions with inanimate objects.

therefore, even guys like ty cobb and pete rose ("charlie hustle") cannot be called "grinders," because they generated enough stats to survive without that reputation.  their hard-nosed mentalities only served to enhance what was already exceptional.

so, please, quit with the accolades for a guy who is hitting below the mendoza line, who shouldn't have been acquired to begin with, and who, schizophrenically, is blocking the progress of the player in whom the organization had staked its future when it traded chris young.

grinder.  pshaw.  eat one at your local deli.

I'm down with Bernstein...
...when he says "When you're white, and you're not very good at playing baseball, you're a grinder."

Me, I'm grinding my honky-ass molars down even with our gang back above .500.

Stretch!

this is the last time i'll bring up erstad
but the man is perpetuating his own hype.  from the recap on the whitesox website:

""When you don't feel good, you'll take anything you can get," said Erstad, who had two hits and raised his average to .185. "That's why you keep grinding it out.""

I saw that.
I'd have to think that was an "F-You" to those of us on the sites who have been heaping criticism.  Can't ba a coincidence.

Darin, lighten up - you've sucked at the plate.

But Ozzie's logic about his CF play is strong - we don't need a great CF at the plate (unless he's leading off!), just great CF play.

So who's  the better CF/team player?

DJ...still bad
First of all, a tip of the cap to Danks...I feel just slightly better now...thanks buddy.

DJ describing Thome's ill-advised attempt to score from third and getting tagged out at home:

"Here comes Thome...and...he...he just missed it."

Just missed what? Being safe? Did he mean the tag? I hope not because he sure was tagged out...geez.

And...I finally had a chance to watch the DVD I burned of the no-hitter replay. Did I mention I was there? Oh yes, I was there...sweet.

Anyway...I laughed out loud when DJ was describing the replay of Sammy getting picked off first...

DJ: "Mark Buehrle makes the nice move and gets Sammy."

(LONG PAUSE)

Hawk: "That's embarrassing."

Classic Hawk.

Tough luck for Danks
Though I can hardly blame Erstad for that dropped ball. When a SS waves his arms calling people off the runs away at the last second...this was on Juan.
There's only so much we can blame E for.

Soap opera continues...
Cowley:

More evidence of how much seldom-used outfielder Brian Anderson might have slipped in Guillen's eyes was provided Friday, when Rob Mackowiak got another start over Anderson in left field and Guillen offered telling comments later.

Guillen was talking about how impressed he has been with veteran Darin Erstad's defense in center field and was asked if Erstad was better defensively than the younger, faster Anderson.

''Right now,'' Guillen said. ''That's why [Erstad's] playing center field. If we're going late in the game, you will see B.A. in left field.

''You're not going to see B.A. in center field, unless we move [Erstad to first].''

Anderson is scheduled to get his third start this afternoon, with the Tigers going with lefty starter Nate Robertson.

Pablo Ozuna will start in left field, giving Mackowiak a breather.

It should be called Bill Veeck Park!

Florida Jim
Letting pop-ups drop is intolerable at every level but the Sox seem to do more of it than others, I wonder if there is a stat on this?
Runners trying to score from second or third is a great call except when they are Thome or AJ when everyone in the park knows they have zero chance of success on short pop-ups[unless the strategy is -maybe someone will run off the ball after calling for it[Uribe}.

Winning UGLY....
Part deux...
But hey - as long as we can start putting up 3 game W streaks on a fairly regular basis -
I'm down wit it...

Yes?
A line drive in the box score.  Remember 2005?  What was our record in ugly games?

Now get jiggy wit it.
