Buehrle Bruised, listed as day-to-day

As I'm sure you know by now, Mark Buehrle was struck by a line drive off the bat of Ryan Garko in the second inning Thursday. He reported some numbness in his hand, and left the game with a large welt on his left forearm just below his elbow.

X-rays revealed no break, and the Sox have said that he's day-to-day, unsure if he'll be able to make his next start.

In the event that Buehrle is unable to make his next start, I fully expect Gavin Floyd to take his place. That will require moving somebody else down for at least 10 days, as is required by MLB rules. The most likely candidate is probably Brian Anderson.

If the Sox are forced to make a move and go with Floyd, you can bet the boys at Baseball Prospectus will be upset. Today, they posted an outstanding FREE feature on Charlie Haeger's rare place among today's pitching prospects.

Despite all the love that Charlie has gotten from saber-types in the last year, I still don't see him as much more than league average innings eater, with some added value due to the flexibility that a knuckler provides. He dominated in April, May, and September, but was a well below average AAA pitcher in the months between. He's still got some significant work to do before he can contribute to a contender.

Damn
You beat me by a couple minutes.  I'll leave it up there, though, as I provide a more 'favorable' (for lack of a better word -- optimistic is probably more correct) perspective on "Chuck".

Podsednik got CS by Victor Martinez...
for the second time in two games.  Absolutely pathetic.  He had a good game otherwise so I won't jump on him too much but Victor Martinez?!?  What's next -- will Piazza throw Pods out when we play the A's and Piazza plays catcher on a rare day?

by SSH2005 on Apr 5, 2007 6:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

normally i don't defend pods
but that throw from martinez looked unusually quick from my vantage point. everyone gets lucky once in a while - just like pods did on his earlier steal and his general offensive performance today.

I have a feeling that the...
Erstad in LF, Anderson in CF bandwagon will be popular this season.

by SSH2005 on Apr 5, 2007 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

weren't we on that one
right after erstad was signed? my seat is pretty good.

i'll also say this about erstad: i've seen two games in person now and he's played a generally very good center - he was getting good reads and his positioning seemed spot-on. him in left and BA in center would make a hell of a defensive wall.

by larry on Apr 5, 2007 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you won't jump at him? I will
if he gets CS by victor martinez there is absolutely no reason for pods to be anywhere near the field
  1. he's worse defensively than BA
  2. he's worse offensively than BA
  3. his SB% won't sniff 50%
but it's not only him, why in the world does ozzie allow him to run I don't understand
or why kenny gave him $3m

and spare me the 'he had an rbi today' talk
if our team awaits the one monthly rbi from pods we aren't going anywhere...

Significant work?
Why? Cuz he doesnt throw a 94 mph fastball? Worst case scenario he probably will be an effective long reliever, which definitely is a contribution. I honestly feel like his upside is better than that. 1 walk for every little over 2 innings is pretty good for a knuckler. And he'll get better with it. Mark it down it aint pretty but this kid is going to be an effective ml pitcher. I also believe the reason he gets "dissed" is no real comparsions.

Save the inherent walks of a knuckler and his last year in triple A would be applauded.

by Tdogg on Apr 5, 2007 7:07 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

cheat is probably
referring to how knucklers generally take quite a while to master the pitch. as the article points out,  he's very young for how far he's come - i'm a bit more optimistic about him than cheat. if danks can't handle the 5th spot (probably a 50/50 at the point), i fully expect haeger to be the one who eventually takes it. and i think he'll be in our rotation by next season.

Don't be fooled...
those who see D. Erstad's 0-4 today and didn't see the game...he was solid.

by stanchar on Apr 5, 2007 7:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Well....
he had a great 1st inning AB in which he advanced Pods to third on a 1-2 pitch...and then scalded another ball right at somebody.

by stanchar on Apr 5, 2007 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah but
Im not in love with Erstad but he did his job in the 1st (get him over) and had 2 line drive outs. Yes he was 0-4 but shit I have to admit hes been effective the first 3 games. Long way to go - I mean grind though.

by Tdogg on Apr 5, 2007 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Forgot about that AB by Erstad...
he did move over the runner, which apparently is no easy task with the way our guys played in the first two games.

by SSH2005 on Apr 5, 2007 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

he was definitely grinding out there
effectively, so far. we'll see how long that lasts.

by larry on Apr 5, 2007 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I still wish we had room for Eduardo Perez...
having him at DH over Thome versus lefties would be pretty huge, IMO.  A Podsednik injury would be perfect, haha.  We could then move Erstad to LF, start Anderson in CF, and re-sign Perez.

Deja vu all over again?
Eduardo Perez, meet Preston Wilson. Preston, Eduardo.

I also would like to have perez
his bat would be nice against lefties

Hilarious, Toonder
The memory of an elephant.

How was your vantage point today?  And, by the by, do you ever go to work during the baseball season?  Or do all the criminals get continuances until November?

:)

by winningugly on Apr 5, 2007 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What, me work?
My vantage point was great as always, although I know Man Soo Lee, and Salas is no Man Soo Lee. Much more pleasant today than it was yesterday, although seeing Eduardo Perez out there would have made the day substantially more delightful.

As for criminals, I only wish my practice were that exciting. But, for the (criminal) record, when it's day game time, I get in at 715, leave at 1215, go back to the office after the game, and go home around 9. God bless night games.

amazing!
[Joe Cowley]
Scott Podsednik made his 2007 debut in the leadoff spot, followed by fellow lefties Darin Erstad and Jim Thome. The trio proved to be effective, going 4-for-11 and scoring five runs in the loss

pods: 0-4, 1 cs
erstad: 2-2, 1 sb
thome: 2-5

the trio was 'effective'
pods was a member of the trio
so, pods was effective

pass the koolaid...

Hey, that's why everyone loved him in '05.
  1. Pods is the leadoff man for the Sox.
  2. The Sox rock.
  3. Ergo, Pods is good at baseball.

You realize that
a "league-average innings eater" would make him the best starter we've thrown this year, right?

by Dongfang Hong on Apr 5, 2007 8:49 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...
A league-average innings eater would be very nice right about now, and would probably be better than what Floyd could provide.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 5, 2007 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've heard that Pods is such a head case
that the Sox are worried he gets so down on himself that he will bury himself.  Ozzie is forced to either play him or get rid of him because he couldn't handle being part time. I vote for trading him for a bag of balls to anyone and let BA show what he he has.
