Danks displays promise in debut

John Danks held the Twins' Piranhas in check during his first major league start. It was the big fish -- the Sharks -- that bit him in the deciding 4th inning.

Danks, who told anyone and everyone that he wasn't nervous entering his first big league outing, looked just the opposite during his first two innings of work. He needed almost 50 pitches to get through the first six outs, relying on almost entirely fastballs because he... 1) couldn't get ahead of hitters, and 2) couldn't get any of his secondary pitches over the plate for strikes.

I don't know what happened in the dugout between the second and third innings, but Danks looked like an entirely different pitcher when he took the mound in the third. He was pounding the strike zone, mixing his pitches, and missing bats. He looked like a big league pitcher instead of the scared rookie we saw in the game's first hour.

Even in the fourth inning, when he got tagged for three runs, he was pitching better than in the early innings, even if the results didn't show it. He got ahead of both Joe Mauer and Michael Cuddyer before allowing 2-strike singles; Mauer on an belt-high, inside fastball one pitch after he stared at a wicked curve for strike 2, and Cuddyer on a changeup that didn't change enough and was a little up. He then tried to sneak an up-and-in fastball by Justin Morneau, but it was neither up-nor-in enough. And that's all the offense Johan and the Twins would need.

The most impressive thing about Danks was the way he recovered from the big inning. He could have reverted to the scared rookie, afraid to throw strikes to big league hitters, but he seemed to get mad and really found his rhythm. His pitching line for the rest of the outing looked like this, including strikeouts of Morneau, Mauer, Torii Hunter, and Jason Bartlett:

IP BF H K BB Pitches 3.0 10 1 4 0 33
It's only one start, but I exited this game feeling better about Danks than I have any "rookie" Sox starter since Mark Buehrle, who only had one bullpen session under his belt when he pitched 7 innings of 2-run ball against the Twins on my 21st Birthday.
* * * * *

Johan Santana continued his complete dominance of the White Sox. And this time he did it without throwing a single slider -- I know I didn't see any -- and below-normal velocity on his fastball. You can spin that one of two ways; 1) Johan is the best pitcher in baseball, and he can make a good team look foolish without his best fastball, and without using his slider at all. 2) The White Sox have to find a new plan of attack against Johan. It's a little bit of both, but since #2 is the only thing the Sox can control, it's what I'll focus on here.

It's long been my belief that against Santana, you just have to accept that you're going to look stupid sometimes. He doesn't give up a lot of hits, or many free passes, and his lone weakness is the longball. With Santana's fastball-changeup combo, you've just got to pick one and look to hit it hard. Let him have his strikeouts, we just need to run into a couple to make him pay.

* * * * *

After two series:

  • David Aardsma leads the Sox in strikeouts
  • Nick Masset leads the staff in innings pitched
  • Juan Uribe leads the team in HR and OPS
  • Mark Buehrle and Jose Contreras have pitched 2.1 innings combined in 2 starts
  • 4 Sox regulars (Pierzynski, Iguchi, Thome, and Dye) have averages under .150
And yet the Sox exit the first week of play with a 2-3 record. Not great, but if I had quoted you those stats last week, you'd wonder if we had a victory at all. (That was almost optimism. Almost.)

Let's see...
How the next few games come out.  If we get some good games in Oakland, there's no reason not to be optimistic about this team.

Pitching baby
I've got a good feeling about this pitching staff.  Looks like we might have a lockdown bullpen like Twins & Tigers had last year, which is a very nice thing to have.  Everyone coming out of the pen has been impressive (although Thornton a little shaky).

Looks like the rumor about Contreras having domestic troubles have some substance, Ozzie alluded to it.  So chalk his horrible opener to his head, not his arm.  Buehrle seemed to have more pop in his arm too before he got knocked out.  Let's see what they do in OAK, pitcher's park and up against a shitty offense - I expect them to have good outings.

Rumors...
Where did this news come from (eg, online blog)??  What did Ozzie say?

by onlysoxfaninboston on Apr 8, 2007 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is the only place I've seen the rumor
http://www.southsidesox.com/comments/2007/4/2/22021/12796/3#3

But Ozzie's comments since the start have all seemed very cryptic. He's seemed to allude to Jose not having his head in the game on opening day.

Santana's fastball...
Wasn't great starting out... he was throwing it in the first two innings at about 91, he worked it up to 94 in the latter innings though (according the gun at US Cellular).  And his changeup was all he needed.  It was filthy.  As much as I hate losing to him, he really is going to be one of the best pitchers I probably get to see.

And he made Thome just look stupid.

And there were very few stupid fans at the Cell today.  By the 3rd inning, everyone had moved out of the shade of the right field line, to join the glorious sunshine of the left field line.  Good stuff.

Anyone else...
...at the ballpark happen to see the chaos caused by Aardsma's final warmup toss in the 'pen? Flew over the bullpen fence and hit a (I'd guess around 8 year old) kid square in the chest and the arm. Ouch!

I thought of this after reading about SSJReb's very stupid fans comment, due to the obliterated pack of idiots behind me who yelled at the kid to take it like a man and that he should stop crying and shut up. It was ridiculous.

It takes two to lie; one to lie and one to listen.

Where the hell was I...
for that?!

I heard all the yelling but I had no clue some kid got rocked!  I'll know to forget about the game now when I see the big double A getting loose.

Jeez, Toonder, man up!
It's a tough world out there!  8 is old enough to be working the plows or in the slaughterhouses.

I wondered
Was the section over (like 10 seats over) and wondered what happened. They had the medical staff over by him for a little while. Finally someone in the bullpen had enough sense to at least give the kid a ball. (Don't know if he got the one he was hit with)

by Brush Back on Apr 9, 2007 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think
he ended up with the ball that hit him and the one that you saw Kusnyer give him. I'm sure when Aaaaaaaardsma figured out what happened, he hooked the kid up.

Great news on Toby Hall...
Hall of a speedy recovery
A spring-training shoulder injury that the team first feared might keep Hall out all season is healing so well that he might return next month.

Better every day
Game 1- Awful; Game 2 - Mediocre; Game 3 - Decent; Game 4 - Great; Game 5 - Santana.

Time maybe for Sox fans to take a step back from the ledge. The last 3 games the Sox have played like it's 2005. Strong pitching, getting runners over, putting pressure on the defense with good speed on the basepaths. None of this mashing the ball nonsense that doome the team in 2004, 2003, even 2006. This team is showing a lot of poise and ability--a lot more than you'd assume after opening day. Things are looking up.

Our offense still looks bad from 3 through 7...
and I don't have much hope for tonight.

by SSH2005 on Apr 9, 2007 9:15 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would...
make the argument that Paulie has not looked all that bad, even if the results aren't really showing it yet (Santana always makes him look a bit silly so I am discounting that).

Let's hope the rest of them just really don't like the cold.

And though he is not among the lowest of the averages, I might be most worried about Crede.  He was popping it up a lot towards the end of last season and it looks like he is back at it.

by CatBrains on Apr 9, 2007 10:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe
a thin offense is the best thing to happen to the Sox early in the season. In the beginning of 2005, they had a pretty emaciated offense then as well (Crede, Uribe, and Dye didn't get above .200 until late April). The pitching had to step up their games, or get hit with a loss. I wonder if last year Sox pitchers had it in their minds that they wouldn't have to scrape for wins and run support like they did in 05, and that made them a little soft. Just a theory, but maybe it's a good thing for the pitchers to know that the offense aren't going to be mashing 6-8 runs a game, that they could walk out of a 6+, 5 ER performance with a win.

by southsider80 on Apr 9, 2007 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, come on.
You really think that the problem with last year was that the pitching just decided it would be okay to give up a bunch of runs?  That's just silly.

by Dongfang Hong on Apr 9, 2007 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Slow Down
I'm not saying it was a conscious decision, but run support definitely plays into a pitcher's mentality. Pitchers know when to step it up, and when they can phone it in--look no further than Freddy Garcia for proof of this point.

Further, that was part of the problem last year--one of many.

by southsider80 on Apr 9, 2007 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll be very interested...
To see how Contreras looks tonight.  If we see Behind in the Countâ„¢ (is that an accepted nickname around here?) again, the optimism I built up over the weekend will definitely take a beating.  If the Sox plan on going anywhere this year, they need the good Contreras to show up most of the time.

Tomorrow's game (Garland vs. Gaudin) is definitely a winnable ballgame (I'm trying to be positive about that game, as I'll be in the stands and don't want to watch another losing effort) but strange things happen in the Coliseum.

The other thing I'm worried about is Dye and Thome.  They've both looked pretty bad at the plate thus far.  Konerko seems like he's seeing the ball well, and I think he'll heat up very soon, but he can't carry this offense by himself.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Apr 9, 2007 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

We are still at a 40% win percentage
against our chief rivals so far.  I never thought we'd be awful - I want to win it all. The pitching couldn't get much worse from game one.  I am heartened by our new young arms (though not naiive enough to think they'll be lights out all year long).

Let's get rockin' after we're over .500.

by winningugly on Apr 9, 2007 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do NOT blame the offense for 2006.
The Sox offense was fantastic in 2006.  The Sox offense sucked in 2005.  The difference was the pitching.

2005 White Sox Runs Scored: 741 (13th in baseball)
2006 White Sox Runs Scored: 868 (3rd in baseball)

2005 White Sox ERA: 3.61 (3rd in baseball)
2006 White Sox ERA: 4.61 (21st in baseball)

by Dongfang Hong on Apr 9, 2007 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, and don't claim that
we didn't get 'timely hitting,' or that those were all in pile-ons, because we beat our pythag in 2006 too.

by Dongfang Hong on Apr 9, 2007 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Grinder-rated
True, offense wasn't the issue. I hear too much about grinder this and grinder that in 2007, which is fine and good. I'd rather win 3-1 than 12-8, any team would. Therein lies the problem: pitching. A 4.61 team ERA isn't going to get it done this year. A point is the fact that the staff gave up an extra run per game. No grinderage will compensate for that.

Well...
Danks was pretty highly hyped to Rangers fans when he was coming up - it makes sense that they'd be curious to see how he'd do after he was dealt away, and his first start was on national TV, making it easy to see.

It was an encouraging start for Danks, but it's way, way too early to say anything about that trade either way.

Woah...
